Next question, how big are the foreign cars typically?

This is gonna be a "family" car....so tall me & tall dad have to fit into it. The Grand Am was too small for dad....

It depends. Obviously, a compact is small for tall people..but a Honda Accord or a Toyota Camry would be good I would think.

Also, check out Subaru Legacy..they have alot of room for tallies I beleive.

I would avoid Hyundai's like the plague- those cars are horrible! My mom had a Hyundai Elantra for years and took care of it/had proper maintnance preformed on it everything -but the car was a lemon and really shoddily made! all of the dials (radio, programing/etc) in the car fell off because they were cheap plastic, the car constantly broke down- you name it! it was the worst car!

She recently traded her old one in for a new Chevy Impala- and wow that car is sooo nice! She got it at CarMax for a really good price!

I drive a silver Mercury Sabel. I LOVE it- it's a really good car and runs very well! I've had it for a few years now without any issues!
(well did until the wreck- i'm still waiting to get my car back!)

My old car before i had my Sabel was an 88' Honda Accord hatchback- oh my gosh i miss that car SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much!!!! Honda's rock!!!! The ONLY reason i don't still have that car is because it was totaled in a wreck when a truck slammed into me a few yrs back (that's when i got the mercury). Hondas are wonderful cars! Mine was old and it ran better than a new car! I never had issues with it and it felt sooo solid/safe! I miss that car!
Definitely consider Hondas -they're wonderful

Also- Fords F150's seem to be pretty good too if you can find one!

I would look at Mercury's (made by ford), Fords, Honda's, and Chevy Impalas! Those are all good cars/trucks! Avoid Hyundai's at all costs and Saturns too (my sister's saturn is a piece of junk- it has had problem after problem)!!!!!

Go to www.Enterprise.com and then click on the Car Sales link. I've bought several cars from them, so has my aunt. You can get a good used car from them that has been meticulously maintained. They don't sell their rental cars. They also provide fleet cars to large businesses and that is what is sold.

The only downside to buying from them...they don't do any financing.

My brother drove one of the first Hyundais off the lot in our area. He had 154,000 miles before it finally died. I had my Hyundai for 12 years before it was hit by another car and totalled. I'm driving a Hyundai Tuscon now. It has one of the best warranties

My next car will be a Toyota!
I really want a Rav4! I'd really check out Toyota's tho. Great gas mileage & good priced too!
Right now I have a Pontiac Grand Prix & ADORE it - never had any problems with it, but I guess thats not what your looking for right now, eh?

I hope you all can find something reasonable!

And I would disagree about Hyundai's. I have an 05 Elantra and absolutely love it. (Knock on wood) nothing has happened and I give it regular care and maintenance. My parents have also had good luck with Hyundai's as well.

Toyota is a good car as well. My boyfriend has a Camry and its awesome, and has a lot of room. My father has a Corolla and that it great. He's tall and it has a lot of room for him as well.

I would never never never own a Volkswagon or Kia. My boyfriend had a Volkswagon Jetta and that thing was the devil. Everytime he got it fixed, something else would happen.

I drive a Subaru Impreza so my vote is a Sube!! I had a Kia, but I am 5'8" and could barely fit in the thing....not too mention that a stiff wind would make you wreck. My friend's sister had a Kia and wrecked it on the highway due to driving past a semi. Pathetic!

Hubby insists on "buying domestic", so we always seem to end up with VWs (I
our Passat station wagon), but I'd say go with a Honda or Toyota. My brother-in-law has two brothers and a nephew who are mechanics, and they always say "Honda"! We belong to the German Automobile Club (ADAC), so we get the monthly magazine. Honda and Toyota always get the best grades as far as reliability and safety are concerned. The Honda Accord is suitable for tall people - my niece's s.o. is Grizzly Bear-sized, and has no trouble fitting into her Accord.

I bought a Honda in March after having only had GM cars. I will never go back. I bought a used '06 Accord, and I love it! I also love that I could sell the thing tomorrow and not owe a thing on it (and I didn't put any money down - just bought it outside of my metro area). I'm still paying off the Blazer that died in February.

I did my preliminary research on the road. I looked around me at the cars in my daily commute. All of the old, ugly cars were Hondas and Toyotas. Where are all the American cars after a few years?

I would suggest a Mazda

I have a Mazda B3000 pick up that is a great truck. I've also had a Mazda Protege (died at.... 300K )

Maybe a Mazda Tribute? It's definatly a family vehicle but awesome on gas

Oh and FYI, Mazda's has Ford engines

My Ford is 10 years old and has never had a single problem.
My Ex's Ford logged over 400K miles on it before it had any issues at all.

My old Toyota had over 300k miles on it before it was retired, my Mazda had over 200k miles on it.

I never do anything to my cars beyond routine oil changes and tune-ups when needed.

If you want roomy, dependable, affordable, go with a Toyota, or Mazda.
I do not dislike Hondas, or Subarus but they are not quite as affordable as other Japanese cars, and most mechanics that work on them tend to price gouge as most assume their owners have money to throw away.

I will disagree like crazy to that statement! My BF has a 99 Kia Sephia with 195000 miles on it and has never had any major problems AT ALL! Its down right now for basic maintenance and car show work. Also my best friend has a hyundai that has been a great car and she got it for 4000 from a preacher. Dont go to a car lot they will take you to the cleaners! Check in your local newspaper or try going to a car auction. You can get very new cars that have been repoed for very little. BFs car was a repo. He paid $1500 for it. It turned out much better than the 87 camery he had before that.
I have a 95 Nissan Sentra and its pretty good. It has some issues but nothing too major, just random little things. If you want to see my BFs car we have pics of it from the car show last month and I'll post um if you want!

And almost every car that you look at will have a few horror stories. It happens, sometimes its because of the owner, or factory problems or having a stupid mechanic. But, if you want good advice try the consumer reports.

I agree that of course there are exceptions...some Kia's I'm sure are really good little cars as I'm sure some Hondas are lemons..you just never know who built it and if they were hungover that day

Just as a general rule though, it is statistically correct that they break and lose their value far worse than a Japanese vehicle.
