OK, this is a long one...
Bradley was on his father's insurance up until about a week ago. Since he is a serious Type 1 Diabetic, buying a plan on his own would cost about $600-$700/month. But his father cancelled the plan because it would be cheaper for HIM to go on his wife's health care plan through her new job at Home Depot. So, he basically left his diabetic son without healthcare (Bradley's job as a boat captain provides no health insurance).
Well, we found out what we thought was good news....he can come on my health insurance even though we're not married yet (as long as we've lived together and shared bills for 6 months- which we have- he can be added to my health insurance). Pretty cool, right? The problem is that my health insurance (and I didn't realize it until Bradley pointed it out) is very expensive compared to other plans (I get it through work). If I added Bradley, it would cost an additional $570/month.
So we're not sure what to do and I've never seen Bradley so worried. I could pay for his health insurance, but that would leave me with NO extra money for savings or other expenses. But he absoslutely CANNOT be without health insurance. If he had to go to the hospital again b/c of his diabetes (which is not at ALL unlikely unfortunately
), the treatment price would be astronomical without insurance. As it is, he has to spend about $100/month on diabetic care without insurance.
He has one other option. He can get a job working on a rescue boat crew. He'd work 7 days on and 7 days off. He'd have to pretty much live at the boat station every other week. The pay isn't great (he'd keep captaining on the weeks that he's off from the other job), but the health insurance is good. I told him he should consider it b/c he NEEDS insurance, but he doesn't want to have to live away from me every other week. I told him that right now he has to do what he has to do and I'm here for him no matter what.
Sorry this has been so long, but I wanted you to know what is going on. If you could please spare some vibes or say a prayer that we can find a solution to this (or if you know of any solutions), we would both be so very grateful. Most specifically, just please pray that he does not get sick now- that would probably be catastrophic at this point in time. Thanks guys- TCS is the best
