They were "old enough" at 8 weeks. The extra time with mom and siblings simply results in their being that much better adjusted and socialized.
They will suckle mom as long as she lets them. It's no longer about survival or nutrition.
The ideal age to re-home them is 12-16 weeks. That is for adjustment and socialization purposes.
