Feel free to spend a little time exploring the airport -- it's worth spending a little time with that sculpture if you're into that sort of thing. Then we're going to pack as much as we can into this trip by splitting into two groups for a time.

So this is when we part company for a day or so. The Island group will head for the ferry terminal and the Vancouver group will head downtown to our accommodation at the Pan Pacific Hotel. Feel free to take part in either group or both, but I’ll use those colours as long as the groups are travelling separately, so it’s easier to tell where you are (geographically).

Back in a moment to get the two groups started...

Before I forget -- that was a wonderful site that Yayi found

http://www.seethewestend.com/

Any time you want something more to do, check it out, and follow the other links on it. It's great.

Now.

ISLAND TRAVELLERS, here we go. Follow the actual route from the Tsawwassen ferry terminal, across to Vancouver Island to the Swartz Bay terminal and into Victoria (though we won’t go all the way just now).

and here are a few more shots from the ferry.

EVERYONE WHO’S STAYING IN VANCOUVER, gather your stuff. We’re headed downtown to get settled in our hotel

Now I'm going to leave you to settle into the hotel, and the Island folks to enjoy the ferry ride, and I'm going to take my snuffly nose back to bed for a short while. See you soon.

Come along, Jasper. No, You don't need your boots and spurs, and definitely not that longhorn cowboy hat! Stop grumbling. Okay, you can wear your big silver belt buckle.

Jasper, you can't catch whales! They're too big and they're protected, too. If you want fresh fish we'll go to the fish market.

Must away for a bit. Time to run some errands!

Back! Thanks. I don't actually feel bad -- just a little soggy at the top

So...the islands you've been seeing from the ferry are the Gulf Islands, small ones in comparison to Vancouver Island. Active Pass, which is the narrowest part of the crossing between the mainland and the southern tip of Vancouver Island, goes through them. I'm never sure which speicic islands are around me on that trip
. But you'll have some appreciation for the intricacies of navigation through Active Pass if you realize that those islands are really the tops of yet more mountains, like those on the mainland coastal areas. Rob is fond of saying of these areas that the real estate stands on its edges.

Time to move on?

Ok, Island Group... Part way into Victoria from the ferry, we will turn off the Pat Bay Highway, and go to Butchart Gardens.

And Vancouver group... if we’re all settled, let’s get going.

First stop: Granville Island, by False Creek... Ash, are you there? Those who came before will remember this. There are craft shops, theatres, and Public Market. (Earlier on Yayi found a great site which introduced us to the West End. In the same series, there's one about Granville Island
http://www.seegranvilleisland.com/ There's a ton of stuff there, if you run out of things to do.
)

The cliche shot, taken on the way in to Granville Island...

And, as we arrive, we see an entertainer in the square. There are always buskers here and at other locations around Granville Island – some of them are quite good....

We can stop to get treats for the furkids at Woofles (I know, it sounds kinda “dog”, but they do kitty stuff, too)

So, let's see. It's still fairly early here, but I suspect you guys will be wanting to think about lunch soon, so let's take the next step...

Island Group! YO! Now we’ll head into town, and drop by Rob’s Mum’s place briefly. I love this view from her kitchen, of Cadboro Bay...

I also love her rhododendron garden, but since they aren’t in bloom yet, you’ll need to come back in May. Here’s just a taste, from a couple of years ago...

But we won’t stay long. It has to be time for lunch, don’t you think? Pagliacci’s is quite wonderful...

The Vancouver Group can meander around the public market for a bit...

http://www.granvilleisland.com/en/publicmarket

-– look at all that lovely produce...

and stuff you don’t see just everywhere, too..

And other lovely stuff, too...

The boats in the bay? Those are privately owned sailboats. There's a yacht club very nearby. I haven't ever had the pleasure, actually, though Rob used to do a lot of sailing when he was younger, and his Dad used to have a boat dealership. Rob hasn't really had much opportunity for sailing in latter years, but his sister and brother-in-law still do. We'll be dropping by their place later today, but won't see their boat, since I have failed to take its picture

The market is a splendid plaace. I absolutely adore it there -- in fact, most weeks I am there at least once, even though the market closes at 6 pm, so it's not very convenient on working days.

I didn't actually put up any meat or fish pics -- just produce and specialty items -- and later, food for lunch
There are several good butchers, and several good fish merchants. I patronize most of them regularly. They can be pricey, but for that special cut of meat, or very fresh fish, they can't be beat.

There are more great pics in this gallery
