Also, from my understanding, the OP rescued this cat. He did not go searching for a cat while he was living in this situation. She was in bad condition and he nursed her back to health, coming here. I think the OP should be comended for his care of Ally, not criticized.
Thank you for that. As you correctly remember, Ally was almost dead when I first found her after being abandoned by her mother (feral cat) and would have been dead probably within 24 hours if I hadn't responded to her distressed cries for her mother.

What is encouraging, is that last night, she started to show a desire to play again when I went to pet her. I couldn't let her play unfortunately as it would risk making her injury worse right now so she had to settle for me sitting with her petting her and rubbing her belly (which I'm happy to say she started to pur after only a short while).

How is Ally today? Did the specialist see her?
She's with the specialist right now. I took her over very early this morning and didn't give her the 3AM pain med dose so that the specialist could get an accurate idea of her pain level. I told the specialist that as soon as she saw what kind of pain Ally is in, to give her something strong pain-med wise. The specialist agreed that she would, and would also sedate Ally to get full X-rays of her neck and head. Also the specialist will be consulting a second specialist nearby.

I got all of Ally's medical records from Saturday's visit to the animal hospital faxed over to the specialist.

I had to leave unfortunately to (ironically) see a doctor for my own herniated disk.

Ally right now should be sedated and getting X-rays. I have one more doctor's appointment I need to make (also for my herniated disk) and then I'm headed back to sit with Ally until they're done.

I've also requested that they change her pain medication to something that doesn't get absorbed via the gums of her mouth b/c Ally starts licking when I give her the medication somewhat lessening the effect.

I should know in a few hours whether she has a fracture or herniation, or just a bad bruise.

Also encouraging is that I noticed this morning that even without pain meds, the neurological symptoms seemed to be lessening.

As soon as I know the diagnosis, I will let you all know.

I know how hard it is to see a cat in distress..
Yeah. It's terribly stressful. I would rank this as stressing me more than the LSAT did or applying to law school did.

Prior to the injury, I was worried about whether or not I'd get in to any more top 20 law schools. Now, I don't care. I picked one out of the schools I got in to (U Minnesota Twin Cities Law) and I just want Ally better. If I get into any other top law schools - great.... otherwise, I don't care as much about the application process as I do about getting Ally better.

Ahh nothing like the possibilty of losing a loved one of putting everything into prespective! Congrats on picking a law school by the way!

Things like this in life...while truely awful...really do help you step back and re evaulate what is important and what isn't and make you appreciate your loved ones (human and furry) even more. Where you go to school and how much you make aren't as important as the flesh and blood creatures that make life worth living. And I think this is a great lesson that Ally has taught you. Even, should something bad happen Ally taught you a valuable life lesson and one I hope you don't forget.

For Ally and I think she will be fine...she sounds like one tough little kitten a true fighter!!

for a good prognosis from the doctors - yours and Ally's! And congratulations on your acceptance into law school. But, it's true - taking responsibility for someone helpless does put so many things into perspective, and can also give us the impetus to work to make things better for them,as you're doing. You saved Ally's life, and gave her love, and I'm sure that love is helping her now. I'm just hoping that 20 years or so from now, you'll be sitting telling Ally what a scare she gave you when she was a baby.

UMN Law is my choice, assuming I don't get in to any other schools. I still have yet to hear from about 10 schools. It's not a priority anymore though. UMN is top 20, and if I get in somewhere else, great. If not.... I'm perfectly happy.

and.

I HAVE SOME VERY GOOD NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!

X-ray revealed no broken bones and no herniations!

In essence - my prayers came true. She has a very very bad bruise... but no permanent injuries.

She will need to live in her new crate for the next month and she will be on opiate pain meds for about 2 weeks, but she will heal and in a month she should be back to herself.

I had to redo her crate to have a smaller litter box and I swapped wheat litter for her kitten attract because she kept getting the kitten attract in her water and food bowls. I don't want her eating clay and possibly getting a bowel obstruction. The wheat litter will be temporary.

I also had to take out all her toys, as the doctor doesn't want her playing for at least the next few weeks. I also had to put a smaller bed in there without a top so she can't climb her bed. Lastly, I sprayed some feline pheromone in the crate to keep her comfy.

She will be ok ultimately. Now I'm going to go keep her company.

Oh, thank goodness - I hope both of you can now get a good night's healing sleep, knowing that the little one should heal well. She, and you, will still be in my prayers for a complete recovery. I have to laugh, though - I'm thinking of how you're going to keep her quiet for a few weeks, especially as she starts feeling better. But, we know she'll have all the love in the world, even if her toys are gone for a bit.

I was away from my computer for a few days and am just getting caught up. My heart just sank when I saw this thread. I'm so glad for the positive outcome. that Ally heals quickly.

I think you should consider taking your dog with you as well when you move. At his age the move could be less stressful than being neglected where he is. More for all of you.

I'm so relieved that she is going to be okay! What a scary situation!

My Milo died from falling from the second story landing at the top of the stairs. He and Nora liked to chase each other around, and would run up and down the stairs. One time they ran up the stairs he did a quick turn to the left intending to go into my son's room but his door was closed so he turned again and ran straight through the railing and didn't stop, and he fell and hit his back on the handle of the vacuum cleaner that was sitting next to the stairs. It snapped his back and paralyzed his back legs. I made the decision to put him down. It just goes to show that accidents do happen. A lot of people's children have accidents and break bones and things, doesn't mean no one should have children.
I'm glad things turned out positive in your case!
I hope she starts to feel better soon!!

Man, it's good to see good news!

As to the law school, did you apply to UT in Austin?

That's great news! Much luck to you for the coming weeks, keeping her all cooped up like that. I'm sure you'll take great care of her.

I think I held my breath while reading this whole thread, and finally took a breath again at the good news. And teared up a little. I'm so thrilled your Ally will be all right!
(Did you tell us what the news was about your disc?)

Yep. Unfortunately, they only accept a few kids from out of state, and this year with applications being so high compared to previous years, I just didn't make the cut. Had this been last year, or the year before, I might have had more of a chance.

Kara Leigh - I'm really sorry to hear that. That's terrible. I knew Ally wasn't paralyzed after the fall as she was still able to walk.... but I also knew she could still have had something broken, herniated, or ruptured an organ internally (ie: bladder or intestines). I was worried in the waiting room at the animal hospital that her going in and out of consciousness was her going into septic shock from something ruptured or internal bleeding. Once we ruled out internal organ damage, my focus shifted to worrying about whether she would need surgery in her neck, or had any pressure on her spinal cord in the neck which could cause sensory or motor movement loss. I lucked out. I'm really sorry to hear that you weren't so lucky with Milo. My sincerest condolences.

Wooo hoooo!!!!!

Now the hard part - making her a "good patient" so she will recover in a timely manner. Hmmm.... how to explain to a rambunctious kitten that she can't be ... well... rambunctious! Good luck!!!!
