On Thursday I got to work a little early so I could leave a bit earlier as well to pack for my vacation in Vermont this week. Around 9am my analyst got called over by my boss to go talk. When he came back in about 10 minutes later he told us he was laid off. We didn't believe him until he started packing up his stuff, then said bye again as my boss escorted him out. My boss came back and said he had to talk to me next. I didn't think much of it, figured he'd tell me the analyst was let go and that I had to pick up extra responsibility or something (as I'm trained to do that job, just needed to do the reverification process...also trained to do the inorganic prep department as well). When he opened the door to the COO's office and I saw her and the head of HR in there, I knew something wasn't gonna go well. He stayed outside the office. They told me they were downsizing because of how slow we are right now. I never really thought I had anything to worry about because of my varied knowledge of the department, and always getting good reviews, as well as just having received a raise in January! They told me they were eliminating my position, but if I'd like to reapply if they got busy again, I'd get first consideration. They canceled my benefits that same day, offered me full pay for Thurs and Fri, then two weeks severance pay, plus 30 hours of PTO paid out. So I get my last bit of income on 3/16.
I'm trying to see the positives, but its hard... the BF says its just fine, but I say its easier for him to say as he still has his job. He says he hates his that much that it'd be fine with him if they did, plus he's good at "hustling" - selling used tires, scrapping steel, and working on cars on the side if needed ... I am not that varied in skills to make decent money off doing that. Yes, I was going to probably quit in about 5 months anyway as we intend to travel and potentially move across the country, but I really could have used the income I was making to save some more money! They started my vacation a day early I guess, and have given me one that will continue once I'm back....
I had wanted to get my kitties and bring them to the apartment, but now that I dont have my job and even on unemployment will still bring in about $1k less/month than I was before, it's not looking as good. [$600 pet fee for the cats to be at the apt]. Filing for unemployment when I get back to SC, then looking for a job to keep me busy for the next few months. I have a few friends that said they might be able to get me interviews or in the door somewhere, so I hope that pans out. Only moved into the apartment in January, have a car payment on another car because I needed to repair my Mustang (thankfully got that loan before this happened! And that the Mustang's repairs are paid in full and it'll be done this week while I'm gone). At least its a cheap payment and there's two of us for all the bills...
Ugh, still trying to see the positives... I'm always worried about money and having enough put away. Pretty mad too, just because of how they did that, and then I know that they are training someone else to do my job now that I'm not there, and someone else to do my analyst's job as well. Rumor was they were laying off 40 people or so, and they did have a BIG stack of termination forms, but then they kept the guy who freaking sleeps during the day right there in the lab and barely does anything, as well as was out for a week, then made an excuse on the day he was supposed to get back, worked for a day, then took a half day!
