On Thursday I got to work a little early so I could leave a bit earlier as well to pack for my vacation in Vermont this week. Around 9am my analyst got called over by my boss to go talk. When he came back in about 10 minutes later he told us he was laid off. We didn't believe him until he started packing up his stuff, then said bye again as my boss escorted him out. My boss came back and said he had to talk to me next. I didn't think much of it, figured he'd tell me the analyst was let go and that I had to pick up extra responsibility or something (as I'm trained to do that job, just needed to do the reverification process...also trained to do the inorganic prep department as well). When he opened the door to the COO's office and I saw her and the head of HR in there, I knew something wasn't gonna go well. He stayed outside the office. They told me they were downsizing because of how slow we are right now. I never really thought I had anything to worry about because of my varied knowledge of the department, and always getting good reviews, as well as just having received a raise in January! They told me they were eliminating my position, but if I'd like to reapply if they got busy again, I'd get first consideration. They canceled my benefits that same day, offered me full pay for Thurs and Fri, then two weeks severance pay, plus 30 hours of PTO paid out. So I get my last bit of income on 3/16.

I'm trying to see the positives, but its hard... the BF says its just fine, but I say its easier for him to say as he still has his job. He says he hates his that much that it'd be fine with him if they did, plus he's good at "hustling" - selling used tires, scrapping steel, and working on cars on the side if needed ... I am not that varied in skills to make decent money off doing that. Yes, I was going to probably quit in about 5 months anyway as we intend to travel and potentially move across the country, but I really could have used the income I was making to save some more money! They started my vacation a day early I guess, and have given me one that will continue once I'm back....

I had wanted to get my kitties and bring them to the apartment, but now that I dont have my job and even on unemployment will still bring in about $1k less/month than I was before, it's not looking as good. [$600 pet fee for the cats to be at the apt]. Filing for unemployment when I get back to SC, then looking for a job to keep me busy for the next few months. I have a few friends that said they might be able to get me interviews or in the door somewhere, so I hope that pans out. Only moved into the apartment in January, have a car payment on another car because I needed to repair my Mustang (thankfully got that loan before this happened! And that the Mustang's repairs are paid in full and it'll be done this week while I'm gone). At least its a cheap payment and there's two of us for all the bills...

Ugh, still trying to see the positives... I'm always worried about money and having enough put away. Pretty mad too, just because of how they did that, and then I know that they are training someone else to do my job now that I'm not there, and someone else to do my analyst's job as well. Rumor was they were laying off 40 people or so, and they did have a BIG stack of termination forms, but then they kept the guy who freaking sleeps during the day right there in the lab and barely does anything, as well as was out for a week, then made an excuse on the day he was supposed to get back, worked for a day, then took a half day!

Been there and it SUCKS!  The crappy thing about layoffs is that you really have no idea why they are letting YOU go, I mean if you get fired you can put your finger on what you did wrong and learn from it and move on. But a layoff, you could have been making just the right salary they needed to eliminate or they had found someone that could do your job for cheaper or whatever.

Sorry it happened to you. Good luck!

Exactly what has been driving me nuts ... They said "oh we're downsizing" ... ok, so why did you pick ME though?! It sucks, I def cried a bit when I got to the parking lot. I really never foresaw that. Never had been let go from a job, its always been on my terms, and its been putting me in a funk....:(

Ruth - I cant even imagine being in that situation! :( I hope it looks up for you all! Its going to be pretty hard when we move I think since neither of us will have a job where we go until we get there, and who knows how easy or hard it'll be.

I'm so sorry.  I've been in a similar situation.  I got laid off the morning I got back from vacation from one job.  I had no students that day so I could catch up and write reports.  My office was very small; I'd known my boss since I was 14 since she was my Mom's friend.  My Mother also worked for the company in a different position.  She had just handed her resignation the week before since she decided to go into semi-retirement.  So there I am up to my eyeballs in work and the "big big" boss from the head office came in.  Not that unusual; till I got called into my boss' office.  My Mother had been called in shortly before me and came out with a weird look on her face.  Basically they had planed to lay her off too but she quit first.  Crazy because they used to brag that she paid for her own salary for the year with what income she brought that company in less than 6 months.  I knew my program was struggling; bu it had been doing better.  Hers was rolling.  So my program was eliminated altogether.

I should have known what was coming when my boss sat down at her desk with super straight posture and this cat that ate the canary meets the Cheshire cat grin.  It was like she was thinking "I'm the boss and being a boss means doing the difficult things!  Go me!"  And stupid me talked them into keeping my program open till the end of the month so my students could have a chance at earning some kind of certificate.  Looking back; I think I cared too much.  I worked my tail off in that position.  It was rewarding because I still keep in touch with some old students.  (Others I would hide from if I saw them in public!)

So not the same thing; but sort of.  It really stinks I know.  It was the best job I ever had and I had loved it at one point.  But I was frustrated with management (that boss was hired for a different position after I started.  She became boss when the lady who hired us both moved.) and getting burnt out with some of my students.  I also felt that while my program was struggling; my boss didn't do much to help turn it around.  It was like she was more interested in her title than the actual work of managing the programs in that office.  I guess you could say it came back to her because rumor has it she eventually quit because she was about to be fired.  No one won that one.
And it cost my mother her friendship with that lady.  My Mom had been in her wedding!!

Any chance they got wind of the fact that you had plans to quit in a few months?

I don't know if you have any unemployment benefits over there but I think that the UK is one of the luckiest countries, we are getting our rent paid which is fantastic, its a shame that so many people abuse our benefits system over here when they could really work and the people that do want to work can't get jobs.x

In my country doesn´t are any benefits for the unployes....

That's so hard, we are very, very lucky and I am so grateful like I said the problem is too many people seem to take advantage of it and think it's a free meal ticket, that spoils it for genuine people.x

I think my team leader threw me and my analyst (who very open about quitting in June because he's finishing nursing school) under the bus. I never told him I was for sure moving in a few months, and had said if I ever planned to I'd be sure to give them sufficient notice, but that was where I intended to be. Oh well, it is what it is I guess. It's probably gonna hit me when we get back from vacation tomorrow then Monday I won't have to get up and go to work & will have the day to think about it.

We do have some, I haven't applied yet. I know there's a percentage and maximum payment and stuff. Guess I'll find out on Monday when I get back...

Tara G, I 'm so sorry you were laid off.  That's a surprise no one wants.

I think it says a lot about your company that the least competent person was kept on the payroll.  Someone who naps during the work day and leaves early is not my idea of a model employee.  If these are the kinds of people the company wants, then you are better off working elsewhere.

Almost twenty years ago, I was laid off from a graveyard word processing position at a downtown Los Angeles law firm.  The reason?  The new hire was cheaper than me.  The problem was that this was woman could not spell to save her life and had no concept of grammar -- two skills that are certainly necessary in a word processing position!  She was hired as a favor to one of the higher-ups in the firm.

At first, I was angry, but then I saw the humor in it.  The lawyers would quickly see that this woman was unfit for the job, and then start complaining -- loudly.

She lasted all of six weeks.  By then, I was one month into my new job -- one that was far better than the one I had left -- better work environment, higher pay, and better benefits.  I was back to being a legal secretary, and worked for two terrific lawyers.  I stayed there for many years.

TaraG, it may very well be that this layoff is a blessing in disguise.  In the meantime, don't worry about money and everything else.  It's not productive, and it will stress you out.  The definition of worry is "using your imagination to create what you don't want."

Enjoy your vacation and come back refreshed and ready to tackle a new job!
