It really is great. I would highly recommend salt to anyone getting a pool instead of chlorine... It is very low maintenance. All we have had to do all summer was add 12 pound of salt. It takes care of itself.
The water doesn't taste funny, it doesn't burn your eyes, and it feels different when you swim through it.

Well, I wouldn't allow that one story to influence my decision to have a pool. It isn't very likely you are going to get a limb stuck in the drain unless you stick it in there and are doing things you aren't supposed to do
The way my drains are, you can't stick anything in them anyway.

We have a pool. It came with our house. It's just a smallish above-ground pool. How difficult it is to take care of totally depends on how much you keep on top of it.

Last year Pat was "in charge" of it and we had all sorts of problems. Of course, he wouldn't read a manual or listen to any authoritative source how to take care of it. He just did what "the guys" told him to do. (As in "Oh, you don't need to do THAT...I just throw chlorine in mine and it's fine.) We had problems with it all last year, and when we opened it this summer it was just FULL of algae. He was so angry he was ready to tear it down. I told him I'd take over the pool at that point.

It took me two weeks and 22 lbs of chlorine to clean up his mess. I've actually READ the directions and I actually DO what the people at the pool store tell me I should do. I spend a couple minutes each day testing the water levels and adding chemicals if I need to. I also brush the sides and vacuum it a couple times a week. It takes about 45 minutes each time. The water's now perfectly clear and we don't have any problems. (Which Pat attributes to the new filter...which we had to buy after he broke the old one. You didn't think he'd actually ADMIT I was doing it right, did you?
Of course, he still "supervises" me.)

I believe that can happen IF the drain covers have been broken off a pool and not repaired. If the pool is properly maintained that shouldn't be able to happen.

My great uncle does. He's 96 years old and gets the family to up keep it for him. The pool has been there since about 1957. We always have our parties and family reunions there.

My mom's friend had one of those blue, above-ground inflatable pools for less than a week, and someone slashed the pool. Obviously, it's destroyed now, but they contacted the company that made it and they're getting a new one for free.

We also have the above-ground blue pool. The first one in the summer got a puncture in the upper inflatable part, but Wal-Mart took it back. Ours is 12ft. x 3ft., but the water level is about 2.5 ft., perfect for a 3 year old to walk around in. My entire family can get it it (me on a lounge, baby in a floatie, 3yo and hubby swimming or sitting) comfortable. It was the best $100 we've ever spent.

To anser the OP's question, we have a had a hard time maintaining clear, blue water, despite daily treatment. As we speak, we are draining it, so we can refill it for the last few months of summer. I think the biggest obstacle is really the incessant heat and the fact that chlorine breaks down when exposed to the sun.

We have a pool here at our apartment complex but I have no idea where it is. When I come home, I park my car, get my mail, and go to my apartment. I don't hang around and try to find stuff.

We have one in an apartment complex. I PROMISED myself that I would NOT get into a bathing suit this summer though. I broke that the other night. We went swimming at like 9pm when there was no one there and no one to witness something to BLIND them!
