fleas can KILL them, and FAST. you need to take a flea comb and a bowl of warm VERY soapy water ( Dawn Dish Soap) dip the comb in the dawn and comb one baby at a time, removing all the fleas you can. keep redipping the comb to get fleas off the comb.

IF that doesnt work, you can give them a very short bath with dawn. I had to do it when i brought prue home, and when i brought Icis home. its a last resort way to get rid of them, but it works. just be very gentle and use lukewarm water. be sure to dry them well after and give back to mom. do one at a time.

Thank you so much I knew that fleas were bad for the babies but with mama being an outdoor cat there wasn't much I could do. Is there a way to give mama a bath without getting scratched to death she is very skitzy when it comes to water. I am afraid that they will just come right back.

Is mom now indoors??? If not...I would bring her indoors with her kittens. I would not recommend bathing mom....however you can ask your vet regarding products that would be safe to use on a nursing mom. It is very important that mom is not allowed back outdoors until her kittens are weaned and she is spayed. Cats are induced ovulators and can become pregnant again as early as a week after giving birth.

Ok I have a question on the subject of fleas. Missy is due sometime in the next week or so. She has been indoors for almost 6 weeks now but I am sure she may have a few fleas. Its hard to tell with how black she is. Can I bathe her before she delivers??? Or would that cause too much stress. I know the lady that had her before me gave her a bath before I picked her up.

I would contact your vet just to be on the safe side. They might recommend a different flea product since she is due in the next week.

Here is the best way to remove fleas from little ones without risking their health:

A very fine-toothed comb will be needed. Do not use one of the metal pet combs, a plastic one with rounded edges on the teeth is preferred. You will also need a bowl of hot water to which you will add just a small drop of dishwashing liquid (many people suggest using Dawn, but I have found that anything that makes suds will work) - you don't need much, just enough to make the water a little sudsy. Also get a bunch of dry paper towels, believe me, you will need them. Don't just take the whole roll, tear a bunch off so they are at the ready. Gently pick up a baby and comb gently in the direction of fur growth to capture the fleas on the teeth of the comb. Quickly dip the comb completely into the water. Totally submerse it to dislodge the fleas. They will float to the top and try to jump off the surface of the water, but the suds should prevent this. You should cover the bowl when you are combing to prevent losing any of them just in case. Dry the comb thoroughly with a clean paper towel so as not to get baby wet at all and repeat this until you have removed the fleas. Work as quickly as you can so as not to upset Momma and do not put the baby you have just finished back into the nest with the other kittens until ALL of the kittens are combed.

Once all the kittens have been combed, take out the old bedding and wash it thoroughly in hot water and bleach or discard it wrapped up in a sealed plastic trash bag. Replace the bedding with clean and then put the kittens back in the nest. You will need to replace the bedding each and every time you comb the kittens until all the fleas are gone.

Absolutely DO NOT use Flea Spray on any carpets under or nearby the kittens.
