thanks, i've been told that they put the cat to sleep if it's sick or injured. Thanks for the advce how to give my cat her pill. She wouldn't let noone touch her back still so it might be pretty hardto hold her still, but she stays still pretty well when i gave her the pill. the vet, said i should be careful when giving her the pill. it canbe also aproblem if she bites. because she probably got rabies from the other cat the attacked her.

Did I read this correctly? Did the vet tell you Whiskers has rabies?

Maybe he misunderstood? Has the cat had any shots? Cats dont usually carry rabies unless u have it going around there. I would think they would have had to hold it for a whilet o make sure if they suspected it.

I can't imagine a vet telling someone the cat may have rabies and just releasing it back to the owner without further tests. Am I just being naive?

I'm really confused. Why are you so willing to give Whiskers away?

A vet would be fined royally if they gave an animal with rabes back to its owner. All rabid animals are euthinized based on the state law. Of course the only testing for rabes is to send their brain to the state for testing, so even testing a potentially rabid animal results in death of the animal.

I seriously think that the OP was mistaken.

This thread was unbelievable.

I have a feeling that xxcragalxx was trying to say the vet said it could be a possibility if it was bit by another animal, in which case wouldn't they give the cat a shot if that was suspected? anyhow, I'm a bit confused with all this as well. I do have another suggestion for giving the cat a pill as I've recently gone through this and my breeder showed me a very easy method for pilling. I would caress the cat and make sure it is relaxed. Hold it gently with one hand or arm to restrain it from running off. Then, with the other hand I gently pry its mouth open with my middle finger (while holding the pill in the same hand) and then put the pill in towards the back of the mouth, then immediately stroke the throat area in a downward motion. this causes the cat to automatically swallow. My first attempt with this method was succesful and easy. good luck with the kitty

Ah, yes, I wanted to add the pill thing, too. Thanks for reminding me.

Tink gets two pills a week to control her heart issues. I come up behind her, open her mouth, and pop it as far back in her throat as I can and it goes down. When we first started, though, she wasn't that easy - I wrapped her in a towel, put her slightly on her back, and popped it in as I just described.

I find that rubbing the throat wipes out any chance of the cat spitting it out it as well..I don't have to push it as far back in her throat this way.

I have to say Crystal I loooooove your siggy! Are those actual stamps or just made to look like that for the siggy? I would love to do that with my little babes

When she's better, you really need to take her to a vet for a general check up and her shots. Is she spayed?

If you and your family cannot afford to get treatment when she needs it, then, as other people have also said, you really need to think about whether it is fair on the cat for you to own it. The poor thing shouldn't have had to go days for an injury without vet treatment.

Please go and have a good think about it and work out whether you can afford to keep Whiskers.

Thank you so much! They're not real stamps, I'm a digital design major so messing with photos and such is my speciality.

Hmmm im starting to wonder... This whole thread just seems odd.
In my state its the law to have at least rabies. Vets wouldnt let a cat leave without one. You would think even more so if the cat had been bit.

I do know that vaccinations aren't reccomended in sick or weak animals as the vaccination can put extra stress on the compromised immune system.

It could be that the OP's cat was ill enough for her vet to advise against imunizations at this point. I would also guess that the vet was unable to tell if the abcess was from a bite, cat scratch or any other type of wound.

I know when I brought my cat in for an abcess caused by an unknown wound my vet didn't want to give a new rabies vaccine or require a quarantine for my cat, but I don't know if there is actually a policy about these sorts of things.
