My FIL has been into online dating. He's made more friends than anything. But then I think he's way too picky! His current girlfriend he met taking an art class though.

I have been online dating on and off for a couple years. To me it is just another way to meet someone. A couple pointers:

1) Expect them to look like their worst picture
2) Talk to them on the phone briefly before meeting so you know they can hold a conversation.
3) Don't talk to them on the phone too long so that if their is no physical attraction you do not feel you owe them something.
4) Meet them in a public place.
5) Just have fun - you may meet some new friends or even the perfect one - but you will be having new experiences.
6) Don't get easily discouraged - you may not strike gold with the first or second guy you meet - but your single so you know it is not easy to meet Mr. Right.

Good Luck and Enjoy the new experience.

My friends and I have all just started to get into online dating but view it as a bit of fun rather than anything serious.

We go to meet the guy/s in groups of two at least as theres safety in numbers and have made some pretty good friends but no-ones met anyone they really like yet.

We have met some weirdos too! But thats part of the fun of it!

That's a very high success rate considering it is among people you know.

Movin' on up!
I've spotted a few "possibles" and have had a few views of my profile. As yet, noone has initiated contact and I'm a bit nervous about making the first move.

I'm serious about this - I even shaved my legs

Well Cind, if you've shaved your legs, then you are one serious chick about this!
Don't be afraid to introduce yourself first. I did with Jerry and we celebrate our 6 year wedding anniversary this summer.........take a chance!

WOW! It sounds like there's a real mix of success and failure/bad luck here. I was kinda thinking of it, but it scares the crap out of me. Not because of serial killers or stuff like that - I'd stick to public places, etc, but because I've never ever met someone I don't know and had to sit and have a conversation with them (i.e. - kind of a blind date). I think I would freak and if they were s a wierdo I'm not sure I could make it through the meal.

I've just never done anything like that. I've always met guys I've dated by actually watching them for a while from a distance (no! not stalker watching, just kind of observing them). That way I feel more comfortable once we go somewhere. But, I'm now finding I'm not in places I can meet guys like that anymore and was considering online - but am terrified!!!
I do go to the gym, but a lot of the guys there are so freaking bulked up they can't put their arms down and all they care about is gettin BIGGER. Yuck!
Can anyone recommend some sites? Ones that they've had luck with? (and sites to stay away from?).
I've heard of myspace, but my kids use it to talk to their friends and I would freak if they saw mom posted there (I think they would too...hehe)

ENGLAND... LAND OF HOPE AND GLORY!
You know thinking about it i met Gil online really.

It was my friend who told me about him, but i told her i didn't want to know about meeting someone online, but unknown to me she gave him my Yahoo id and he popped up on my screen one night. The conversation started like this:

Gil : Hi are you Susan?

Me : Might be who's asking?

I was a bit annoyed with my friend in the beginning when he popped up like that because theres not many have my Yahoo id, but he was so easy to talk to that i forgave her.

Then the pc conversations went into telephones ones for the next 3 months, but i did this for a reason because i wanted to know as much as possible about him before deciding to meet him, and 4 months later were still seeing each other

I met my dear hubby on a dating site in 1999, and have been thanking God for bringing us together ever since!
I wish you the best!

You sound alot like me. I've been single (divorced, single mom) for over 12 years now and stopped dating a year after my break up. It was too difficult on the kids who were already traumatized from their father leaving and I couldn't make time between my job, my home and the family.

I'm a subscriber to Match at the moment. It's scary out there.
I keep getting solicited by con artists (I've had to report 3 of them).
They want me to write to them at a different address, have very strange e-mails (very gushy and fake), and I found one of them on another dating site (American Singles) with a completely different profile!

Just be careful and have fun too.

I work with a girl who has gone on many dates through Match and another who met her husband on American Singles. It is possible. You just have to week through the creeps - and don't be afraid to say "No Thanks"

That's too bad you met losers Laurie......when I first started talking to Jerry, I asked him for his phone, work phone, addy, etc. I checked them all out to make sure he wasn't a conartist. If they have nothing to hide, in this day and age, they don't mind if you do that. He didn't thank God! LOL Only secret he kept from me is he's a slob!

Perfect example of what I suspect is yet another con artist who just wrote to me moments ago:

"Hello Dear,
How are u doing?..i hope u doing good well i am Steve male from IA(Des Moines) with a kid of 10 years that lives with my ex ,....i have gone through so many things in life which i will like to express right now and i must tell you that you seems sweet nice and kind and your profile tells me more about you,i must tell you i need a woman like you in my life, you have all the qualities a man like me need in a woman.i am Kinda shy of expressing my feelings in person, and most woman here in my states are not honest with me and loving. Well it nice coming across your profile and i think it really interesting...You want to be treated right. You want to be valued and understood. You want to be free to express yourself and you understand the world around you.i have ben hurt so many times and i am waiting to meet a nice woman as you are.You would like to talk more and to make me your friend and see what happens later you can mail me at ************ and yahoo messanger id is *********
Thanks.
Steve

What's tipping me off is the broken English, the gushy words (men don't talk like that), and the fact that he wants me to write to him at another site. The picture of him is also of a very attractive young man. I'm sure it was hijacked from somewhere.

LOL, well Laurie, you should't judge a book by it's cover, but I see what you mean. My girl at work Debi got lots of letters like that. We all want a letter from someone who is well grammered, etc. I personally wouldn't keep up with him, but it's a shame, because my sister is the sweetest thing, but she writes kind of like that. Her grammer stinks!

LOL, a guy that gushes like that, especially without knowing you, wouldn't get the time of day from me.
