I'm always fascinated to learn the various unique features, traditions, and beliefs carried on in different countries and regions of friends around the world!

Where I live, for instance, stands the tradition that on New Year's Day, eating black eyed peas brings good luck for the coming year, collard greens bring exceptional wealth, and pork brings good health. I also enjoy the belief that the first person to enter your home in the New Year will bring good luck!

What are your New Year's traditions and beliefs?

We have friends that eat sauerkraut and sausage on New Years day. They both have German backgrounds....(so maybe it`s a tradition form there????)
I always remember to have an excuse not to accept an invitation to their house for dinner on THAT day of the year. YUCKY YUCKY YUCK!!!

Yes, Fran! I really enjoy the grape tradition, as well, red grapes being my favorite fruit!

Sauerkraut and sausage, yuck! I'd have to pass on that meal, too!

Glad you guys are familiar with the black eyed peas! Thanks for the excuse to not do laundry on the 1st, Cathy!

This is interesting. I didn't realize people really had New Years traditions.

There are a couple here in Germany. People eat "New Year's Pretzels", which are huge bread pretzels. They also give each other little pigs made of marzipan for luck. Another custom is to melt lead over a candle, and to pour it into cold water. The figure that forms is supposed to predict what will happen in the coming year. You can buy little kits with instructions and interpretations of the figures.

I don't have any either, but I overheard a lady telling my physical therapist the other day, that you're supposed to line up coins on your windowsill and it will bring you money luck the next year. I don't know, but I'm trying it!
Thanks for this thread to remind me, or I would have forgotten and gone broke next year!

I'm also glad I don't do the saurkraut tradtion!!!

In Illinois and here in Arizona... Some people are members of the "Polar bear club" and they jump in a lake full of cold water with just bathing suits on on NY day

The only tradition that Zack and I have is to go to Benihana's for dinner on New Year's day evening.

Also, tomorrow will be 3 years since I got Mittens

Ah, yes, the Polar Bear swim. There will be thousands of idiots down at English Bay and Spanish Banks doing the Polar Bear thing on New Year's Day. I will not be one of them.

We don't really observe any handed down New Year's traditions -- only those things which have become our own customs over the years. No specific food traditions, just a nice dinner late, either by ourselves or with a few close friends, and some bubbly to welcome the New Year. Then brunch on New Year's Day is Eggs Benny with Mimosas.
