Hi all
I've had Patty for about a month a half now..she was initially the cat at my job..now shes my little cutie pie..lol
I was able to take her today to get her first shots. The Petlands by where I live have vets come once a month to provide vacinnations at discounted prices. Today she received the Happy Kitten Package which consists of Feline Distemper(FVRCVR), Leukemia, Roundworm Dewormer vacinations. Next time I go-in another month or so I'll take her for the Happy Cat Package that consists of Feline Distemper(FVRCVR), Leukemia, FIP and Rabies. Today she received the happy kitten package and I also had her blood tested for Feline Leukemia and AIDS which the Vet recommended I do since she was a warehouse cat. The vet checked her out and said she looked healthy overall. The only thing he commented on was that she had a big belly. I told him that before she came to live with me, around 2 months ago she had disappeared from the job for a few days and we weren't sure if she was pregnant. My goal is to def spay her once she gets all her shots. He said she could be pregnant or it could just be worms. Supposedely that cats do a good job at concealing pregnancies and their gestation period is around 60 something days. I thought she was fatter b/c she eats a lot more here than at my job but I wonder now if she is pregnant...hm..I guess I'll have to wait and see if her belly gets bigger..are there any other tell-tell signs? I felt so bad for Patty today...I almost cried as they were giving her her injections and hearing her cry..poor baby..lol MY bf says I spoil her too much and am too soft..But I don't care I love her so much and it hurt me to see her in pain
Ever since shes been home shes been meowing a lot and seeking a lot of affection..I've been petting her and babying her..lol..Currently shes on my bed kneading and purring herself to sleep..
Should I be on the look out today since these are her first vacinations ? Oh by the way, the vet said shes probably between 2-4 yrs old..I think shes closer to 2

Awww she's gorgeous, lovely colouring!

I have no advice, just wanted to say that there's no such thing as spoiling a cat too much, it's what they were put on this earth for!

just in case she *is* pregnant, you might want to set up a box for her with an old blanket in it, and put it in a warm but out of the way place.
if she is pregnant, when he due date comes closer, she will want to nest- she will be looking for a good and private place to have the kittens.
once it seems like she has found the spot she likes (and you can only hope she will choose the box you set up for her!!) move her food and water dishes nearby and her litter box too
she will probably move the kittens not long after giving birth, to a clean dry spot (the spot she was in will be wet) and so if she does not choose the box to have the kittens in, she may still move them into it after wards.

most cats don't need any help while they are giving birth but a few do. they mostly prefer it to be quiet and calm and you stay where you can see her, to help if needed but most momma cats manage this perfectly fine on their own

we had one cat who did not bite open the birth sack on one of her kittens and we had to get the kitten out and stroke it with a damp wash cloth to stimulate breathing, but that was about it, everything else went well.

she *does* look pregnant to me in one of those photos, and that is why i strongly suspect you will be having kittens soon- many cats never even look pregnant at all.

average litter i think is four. pray that its not a big litter!! its so hard to find homes for them.

and i agree with whomever said you can't really spoil a cat. just like with a baby, there is no such thing as too much lovin'!!

good luck and please let us know if you get some little ones! she is a tortie, it looks like?? i wonder what color her babies will be.

Cats generally have a 67 day gestation, some deliver at 63-65, some as late as 70 days. If you feel she's pregnant (and I agree, in one of the photos, she does look that way to me), you need to discuss with a vet the fact she was vaccinated and wormed...neither are recommended during a pregnancy.

This is based on my years of when I was breeding and showing cats. I'm sorry to be so blunt but I am worried now
and I'd rather you discuss this, and be aware of any implications.

I asked Gayef, the moderator of the Pregnant Cats and Kittens section to come read this, in case I am way off base. I do not want to worry you needlessly. In the meantime, I thought you might find this an interesting bit to read, by Gayef click here on pregnancy and delivery in cats.
I am honestly not sure of how much impact and in what way this can have on kittens, and am not sure if it matters if the vaccines were modified live or killed but believe *if* killed was the type of vaccine used, that is much safer and okay. Re the worming, I just don't recall that being a good idea - there I may well be wrong, and again, look forward to Gayef commenting, once she's gotten my pm asking her to come and comment.

thanks again pat&alix...really appreciate the input..I love that cat so much and only want the best for her..I'm so mad at that vet and pray she will be ok..I think ill call the office of the vet that saw her Monday and asked what kind of vaccine it is and let them know what happened..I will def read the article and look forward from hearing from Gayef..thanks
By the way, I was doing some research online and was how normally pregnant cats should have their nipples become red and maybe swollen..haven't really noticed that in Patty and was doing the math...I got her around Sept 23..about a week before that she had disappeared at work so assuming for math purposes she conceived on the 16th...she would technically be in her 40th day or so and have another 23 days or so left..I estimate around thanksgiving week..assuming she's pregnant to start with(since her only sign is the bigger belly-which maybe could also be from eating a lot more?-at work she didn't always have access to the food..they'd move it around ect)..thanks again for the input..really appreciate it..take care

Katgrl81..it would also be a good idea to keep her indoors only for now.

def TNR1
Patty is not allowed outdoors since shes not spayed yet(was hoping to get her spayed as soon as she received all her shots). The other day I put a harness on her so she could walk outside with my supervision of course and so was not too happy at all! LOL I'm going to post a pic of her so you could see her expression..LOL She'd even flip over and bite the leash..lol

Still Hittin' 'Em Right Between The Eyes
From the Winn Feline Foundation regarding vaccinating pregnant cats:

"The actual risks associated with vaccination of pregnant cats are poorly documented. While the panel concluded that the risks of vaccinating pregnant queens are likely overstated and that there are circumstances when the benefits of vaccinating a pregnant queen outweigh the additional risks, the routine vaccination of pregnant cats should be avoided."

I would most certainly call your vet on Monday and confirm the type of vaccines used. If a pregnant (or suspected to be pregnant) cat MUST be vaccinated, a killed virus vaccine is best. Killed virus vaccines may be given during pregnancy, especially during the later half of gestation if necessary for the mother's health. According to Cornell:

"Modified Live Virus vaccines should not be administered to pregnant cats."

Again, according to Cornell:

"Developing fetuses are much more susceptible to damage by vaccine viruses than are kittens or adult cats. Fetal death, abortions, resorptions, or congenital birth defects can be the result of vaccination of a pregnant cat with certain vaccines."

Please contact your vet and let us know how it goes?

Thanks, Pat for bringing this thread to my attention.
