Hello,
About 10 days ago, I found a long-haired, black cat. He is very thin. He has a collar and tag (ID, not rabies) with "Nomar" and what I'm guessing to be a phone number. The problem is the tag doesn't have an area code on it - only the prefix 595 and the last 4 digits. I tried calling the number in my area code, but had no luck. I live in Indiana, but this guy could be from anywhere. I think someone truly cared about him at one time because he likes to be held and is very affectionate plus the fact that he does have a collar and tag. I also think he's been gone quite some time because his collar has become imbedded in his neck. I worked at a humane society for several years and I have seen this in dogs, but never a cat. It's possible he was a juvenile or even a kitten when he became lost and grew enough for this to happen. I feel so bad for him. If anyone out there has any ideas as to how I might find his owner, would you please, please post it here? This forum is the first place I found to ask for help.
Thank you!
Julie

You could start by calling that number in every prefix in your state. Another thing would be to let the local shelters know that you have found him. Nomar is a pretty unusual name (I think). I am glad that he found you.

Can the phone company assist in helping you find the area code??? Isn't Nomar a first name of a baseball player-perhaps that is the state he came from. Find a sports fanatic to help you. I hope his owner is found. Did you post on petfinders.com??

Nomar used to be with the Boston Red Sox, now he is with the Chicago cubs, which is a little closer to you

A suggestion, how about the reverse look up when it comes to phone #s. Just a thought.

Welcome to TCS, Julie! Bless you for taking in this poor stray. I think that you are right on track in supposing that he's been on his own for awhile. have you tried posting on PetFinders? If he's been gone for awhile, you might need to check the lost pets archives, if you can access them - his owners may have given up hope. {{{Prayers & vibes}}} for finding his owners..

You are wonderful people. Thank you so much for the responses and ideas. I am going to try all of the suggestions you gave me. I'm starting with reverse phone look-up and then going on to petfinders.com., etc. It seemed like almost all of my searches for "pets lost and found" were just advertisements!
I assumed Nomar Garciaparra was still with the Red Sox. It's good to know the boy's people may be closer than I think.
If anyone else has suggestions, please let me know. I just have a feeling that someone is missing this guy very much.
