Ok, here is what I was asking Amy -

My fireplace decorating is a work in process right now - I am thinking of addign small pumpkins, and various size pillar candles to the mantel along with white lights.

Any other ideas and suggestions ?

Abbeysmom: Awesome set up....I decorate for the fall, too. I usually start around the end of September when the weather is a bit more crisp! But I love your fireplace! I was thinking about maybe you should put some harvest colored pillar candles...like pumpkin colored, cinnamon colored, gold colors, etc....and maybe try to find some of the crystal sprays...they will reflect the warm colors of the candlelight and the other colors you have corporated already...and it will just be beautiful....heres some at Seventh Avenue:
http://www.seventhavenue.com/shoppin...eyword=dd77015 That is just an example, of course, you could probably find something like that anywhere, in an arts and crafts store or a home decor store. Good luck! And your set up really is beautiful!

Thanks!

That's exactly what I was thinking of for pillar candles. I will have to look at one of the craft stores for the crystal sprays. I know I have seen them.

I'm glad I started this thread, too, as there is apparently a LOT I have to learn about seasonal decorating, lol.
Where do y'all normally buy your decorations from? Are there any home good stores that you're especially fond of for buying seasonal decorations?

Wow, you folks are ambitious!
I haven't even thought about seasonal decorations yet, we just moved from a 2 bdrm apt to a 4 bdrm house literally twice the size so I'm still trying to get enough furniture to fill the place! We are, however, completely unpacked-- we were out of the boxes in two days, which is a new record for us!

For the fall I buy this yr gourds and pumpkins because of the drought. However since I grow corn & always have lots of cornstalks plus I give extra's away otherwise I have to burn them. Then I scrounge in the "wood" for grapevine to twine about the stalks.
One thing I grow well is broom corn which really isn't corn but a type of sorghum. Its really easy to grow-the stalks are about 10 feet tall. The "tassels" if one was REALLY motivated is what brooms used to be made with. I buy my seeds thru Seed Savers Exchange so the "tassels" are different colors from a tan to maroon-they are just starting to color up now and then I will post a picture. I usually display these on there own cause they are so cool!! I have also secret sources for bittersweet but that shouldn't be picked until frost so the orange berries pop open. I pick acorns from my neighbors yard and small spruce cones from my yard and display. In GA Amy you pick those sweet gum umm balls??? I spray paint those for fall and christmas. Then buy pots of mums and swipe haybales from the barn. I have I think 2 or 3 rubbermaid bins full of fall stuff. Plus I plan on making more stuff-I take pictures and post too.
Mom & I are going to a BIG craft show tomorrow morning and I'm sure I'll buy more stuff as you can decorate fall/autumn stuff until Thanksgiving!!
Feel free to pm me to pick my brain for ideas!!

Any southerners- you have trees that grow some really BIG pine cones-maybe we can swap for stuff up here???

Very pretty! I agree that you could use something with more height. Just are a few suggestions... A fall looking picture proped against the wall, a standing scarecrow or turkey figure, a vase, basket or crock filled with dried twigs, wheat or silk sunflowers, fall colored candles on tall candle holders.

The only fall decorated photos I have are of some of my cats.

Part of the fun is learning as you go along!

Like Gail, in the fall I like to use a lot of natural things. hay, pumpkins, gourds, mums, grapevine, cornstalks, etc. What I can't find around my yard, I buy at the local farm stands. I like to go to the craft stores in the area - we have AC Moore (the best), Michaels, and JoAnn Fabrics.

Out here we also have the Christmas Tree Shop - they are dirt cheap and have some great decorations.

Outdoors for Christmas I like to go natural also using greenery, pinecones, berries, and spray paint branches gold or white. Indoors it's all snowmen!

Now I am off to finish my Halloween village

If you have a WalMart in you area, make sure to check them out. The usually have some of the cutest craft-type holiday decorations at very low prices! I used to make & sell woodcrafts a few years ago, there's no way that I could have sold my crafts at the price that Wal-Mart is selling their stuff & still turned a profit.
