I've done the research for you.
Seriously, I have read every State's animal cruelty statute and already put together the summary, as well as a more complete summary of each state on that site with links to all of the state laws. I did this for exactly this purpose - so someone else wouldn't have to go through all the trouble of doing it again.
I love it when someone does that, sometimes (usually at work) I feel like I'm reinventing the wheel for no reason.
Thanks!

That's for sure. I'm thrilled to see that there's so much enthusiasm for this and how everything is coming together. With Charlie's case and the two kittens being killed, I've been in a serious funk the past few weeks - totally fed up with people and the system, but this gives me hope and renewed energy to work for justice.

This is just a thought, but do we need to give some idea about how we're going to handle membership? I was just talking to a lady I work with who's willing to write letters, etc... I'm guessing there's a lot of people who'd be interested in being involved at this level, so maybe we need a membership coordinator too?

Okay, so here is something I didn't see on Heidi's site (but I have been known to miss these things) - a comparison of Animal Cruelty maximum sentences to other violent/non-violent crimes. I have no idea what the maximum sentencing for things like assault/robbery/drug possession/etc. compare to animal cruelty.

I can cover that if you want. Just send the names and contact info to me. I think we should pm some TCS members who may have missed this thread. Howard (BigKittenDaddy) is already a member.

Here's my stab at a mission statement. It's pretty similiar to what you and Sara developed. I also (tried) to come up with some objectives for us.
The mission statement would be more for the public, to state what we're about. The objectives would be more for us, to keep us focussed. Just a rough draft, so add, change or delete as needed.

Our goal is to be a voice for domestic animals and seek justice on their behalf by working for harsher punishments for those who abuse them. We aim to increase public awareness of the frequency of these heinous crimes and raise consciousness of the correlation between animal abuse and violent behavior.

Objectives:
1)\t We will seek change to the laws (local, state & federal?) related to the punishment of those who engage in the abuse of domestic animals.
2)\t We will work with humane society investigators, law enforcement officials and prosecutors to obtain information pertinent to abuse cases in our areas of residence.
3)\tWe will strive to educate the general public of the prevelance of such crimes.
4)\tWe will encourage others to join in our efforts to seek justice for domestic animals that have been abused.

The mission statement web page is ready. Now I'm working on the links page, which will of course have links to TCS and Stray Pet Advocacy. If you know of other good information sites please pm me. Also, I need ideas for what to put on the home page. I'm drawing a bit of a blank there.

You will all be able to see the beginnings of the site next week when the hosting set up is completed. Are you all as excited as me?

Is there any way to do a seperate "kid's page" & see if you can link it to the major sites that kids go on, like an early educational thing?

What about some statistics? Like, an introduction to what we are trying to do? Or news? What issue we're working on? I dunno... tossing some ideas out there...

Excellent idea!! Since a large number of animal abuse cases involve children who weren't taught to respect animals, this is very important.

I think putting up some statistics and an intro to what we are doing is a great idea! Amy is going to send me some info and we can use some of it in the opening statement on the home page.

Actually, that made me think. What about a small section on teaching your children to respect animals?

That's a good idea! We need to convince parents of the importance of teaching their children to respect animals.
