I used to live in Wyoming but from Arkansas...I can remember that kids made fun of me on how i referred to a soft drink...i believe the majority around here say "what kind of coke do you want?"...and in Wyoming they say "what kind of pop do you want?" ...so which do you use?
Coke.....Soda.......Pop???

LOL, that's a tricky one. I was born in Florida, and currently live there, where everyone calls it "coke," but I was raised in Oklahoma, where everyone calls it "pop".... I came down here, and asked someone what kind of "pop" they wanted, and she looked at me and said, " What kind of WHAT do I want?"

I think that pretty much all southerners call it "coke". I'm in Louisiana, here it's coke. We have family in OK and they call it "pop" and we laugh at them. To me a "pop" is a flavored drink such as strawberry, orange, grape etc. "Coke" is the dark carbonated drinks.

I used the "coke" term as a native Tennessean all my life. Now I say "Soda", but I can't remember when I switched... I'd say it was when I moved to Florida, but that was only three years ago and I think it was before that.

People in TN never could "hear" my accent and always thought I was from "up North"... but when I did phone work and talked to people all over the country, that was the first thing they noticed! At any rate, I think I tried to get away from "Things Only Southerners Say" a long time ago just so I wouldn't sound so silly to "foreigners" (aka Northern or Westerners)

Crazy. You must be my long lost twin or something. j/k. haha. I'm a native Tennessean, too. I've always said "coke" and I still do. People always said the exact same thing to me in TN..."You don't sound like you have an accent." And then I moved to the SW and people say "Wow, you have an accent."
I also went through that phase of trying to loose all my Southern sayings.

I was always told that you can take the girl out of the country, but you cant take the country out of the girl! I'll always be a "country-gal" at heart, but live in the city!~

I grew up in eastern Canada (Montreal), and have lived at the opposite end of the country (Vancouver) for more than half of my life. The generic term has always been either "soft drink" or "pop", pretty much interchangable. "Soda" refers to a particular type of pop, also known as "soda water" or "club soda"; "Coke" is a name brand, and if I order it (seldom) I expect to get Coca Cola Classic, unless they ask whether Pepsi is OK.
