You could fill up a bowl of water, sneak it under you desk and do it that way? Just watch the electic cables (which if like under my desk at work, there's tonnes!)

I tend to ask first, although I agree it's an informal thing so I feel uncomfortable unless it's a friends house. I also always worry that my feet smell!

I always take my shoes off the minute I get home, I don't like clomping around plus I have downstairs neighbours and I feel better about walking around if I only have soft socks on (hopefully less noisy for them).

Actually, the other month when it was really hot I couldn't get certain pairs of shoes on. I think that was the first time that I had ever noticed my feet sweel!

I hate to say this, but when I saw the title, my first thought was the poster was Canadian! This was a topic at an etiquette forum and one reason for taking shoes off (besides being wet or muddy) was that the house had pine floors and that's a soft wood.

If I enter a house where shoes are to come off, I hope my hosts are courteous enough to provide a seat where I can sit to put them back on. I have some physical limitations and it is hard to stand and bend to tie my shoes.

I usually go with what the hosts do. I have an aunt who has around 30 people for family eents at her house. She has lighter carpeting so it's shoes off. There are however, usually about 5 dogs (my aunt had 3 alone) running in and out at these gatherings, so we learned not to wear good socks when going there. I do not generally take my shoes off at other people's houses and generally don't think about it, unless I see the hosts take theirs off first. I am however curteous about getting snow and mud off even going to my own place and car. Scott however is bad at remembering to do this and it urks me a little when he gets in my car with his snow or mud covered feet.

No matter where I go I will take my shoes off first, But if I go to my familys house I walk in with shoes on, My familys homes aren't the cleanest and you have no idea what mess you may step in
. I don't go to often, most likely has to be an emergency. If anyone comes to my home I have hardwood floors so I normally request the keep their shoes on incase feeties get cold.

I have major problems trying to find nice shoes for my big clown feet, nothing looks dainty when it's that big!

I already take my shoes off as I don't like werating them. In the winter if my feet are cold I will wear socks/slippers. DH on the other hand ALWAYS WEARS SHOES!! He grew up that way. But its a pain as the carpeting in our bedroom is very like colored and always looks dirty. I yell at him to say no shoes upstairs!! We are both outside almost so my feet are usually dirty. He doesn't wear sandals either at least those could be quickly removed.
As for guests-of course if there shoes are dirty-they must remove-lots remove right away anyhow.
But I wonder if more women than men don't wear shoes in the house.

I have been told by a carpet installer that my carpets will last longer and look better if we don't walk on them in bare feet or sock feet.

I do NOT want anybody's sweaty feet on my carpets. I would rather supply slip-ons at the door (in winter) or have them leave their shoes on in summer. For the cost of renting a steam cleaner to clean my rugs, it's worth it to me rather than have "stinky" feet on my carpets.

My daughter has ladies size 13 feet and she has no problem finding nice looking shoes at Pay-Less and though rather expensive she can always find nice shoes at Tall Girls.

I'm the exact opposite, I get offended and grossed out when people take their shoes off. Like if it's close friends or intermediate family it's ok, but for other people, EWW. And I usually will not go to someone's house if I know I will have to take my shoes off because it makes me very uncomfortable.
