Obi has a collar but I only put it on him when I let him outside (weekends, when I'm around to monitor him). It's one of the break-away collars. I bought two, actually, to see how effective the break-away thing is and it worked when I hung something from it (approx 10 lbs). I took the bell off. Obi never messes with it, and doesn't seem to mind at all. In fact, he gets excited when I bring it out, because he knows that it means outside time has come!!

That's what we have, a break-away type. Though we never tested it... but nice to know they really actually do work

There's an easy solution to that. When your pet is micro-chipped, you should receive a pamphlet for PetTrac from the shelter/veterinarian. You can register your pet's microchip number on the worldwide database for a small fee.

Well, I had to vote "Other" - my kitties do now but didn't always. My mom's cats are indoor/outdoor kitties and NONE of them wear collars, YET

Bella started out wearing a collar, but she had really nasty ear infections and wound up scratching the first one to pieces! So I figured since she wasn't going outside I'd let her slide - she is always in a carrier when we go to the vet. HA HA, she says, she slipped out one day for about three hours when we were helping the neighbors move in. Thankfully she didn't stray away from the building!!

Now that we're moving, I purchased an ID tag w/my cell number on it, just in case something happens. She will continue to wear a collar when we get home to MT, too. I bought Mika one, too, but I don't know if Scott will keep it on her once she gets to his new home.

Marsh wears his for the vet and anytime out of the house, otherwise, no. I was told by my breeder it will ruin his beautiful silky coat around his neck if i keep it on 24/7.

Guinness is an inside/outside cat. Atm, he does not wear a collar but he is microchipped.

I am thinking of purchasing a new cat flap that uses small magnets on the collar so that only Guinness can come in and out. The past few months he has this habit of bringing in Pebbles (boy cat, one of his friends) and Chloe (girl cat, also one of his friends) to the flat. I come home from work and instead of 1 cat I end up with 3!!! I have caught Pebbles spraying up one of the walls in my flat and I have also found traces of urine on the skirtings etc.

If I go ahead with the above, then Guin will HAVE to wear a collar
I am sure he will get used to it after a while...

If you're looking for a collar, try Lupine or Beastie Bands.
They also do collars with elastic on them so that if ever the cat got caught on something, they may not get injured and would be able to escape....

All the shelters around here have the same scanner as the chip that's in Hershey. I've already checked that out before I shelled out the money for it.

same here! i also like the way they look, & it's a good place to keep the tags. i voted 'always' but Pixel is currently collarless - she has sensitive skin (apparently!) & i had gotten her a new beastie band & forgot to trim the rough velcro down. if i don't trim it, it rubs a sore on her neck, which it did. so she's not wearing it while the place heals. she doesn't particularly like wearing it, anyway - lets me take it off, but fights me some when i replace it.

All of mine wear their collars most of the time (they're in the training stage of wearing them - Kuce and Luvbug are pretty cool with them and Lil' Jag is getting used to it.) They have their ID collar (small one) on it. The only problem is finding a 13-14 inch break-away collar for Luvbug since the 12 inch is too small for him. (Sphinx - our RB kitty loved his collar and the harness and Lead.)

They are also in-training with the harness and leash. No microchips yet since most of the shelters here don't have the scanners to check for them.

Both my boys always wear break away collars with a bell and a tag with their name and phone number on it. I do take the collars off a couple of hours every couple of weeks or so so they can have a break from them. They seem to enjoy it and it ensures that I check their collars to make sure that they aren't getting too tight or frayed.

I've been kicking around the idea of harness and leash training them as well. Probably more Samwise than Gandalf though as Gandalf isn't a very social kitty and doesn't like leaving the house unless he's in his carrier. Samwise on the other hand has never met a stranger and seems interested in going outside and exploring as long as he can keep me in his sight.
