To start out with, I've had my one cat for almost two years now. I found her outside of my dorm at college when she was about 6months old. I'm not sure if she was abandoned or what but she's always been semi skittish.

Now, two months ago I decided it would be a good idea for her to have a friend because I'm working full time and she's alone most of the day. I found this cat in the shelter and she was going to be put to sleep due to poor health and all of that so I adopted her. They said she was about three but her health problems indicate she's older than that, probably closer to 6-8. I got her also because she seemed like a very calm and sweet cat. She has hyperthyroidism which is being treated for, so aside from that she's healthy.

The problem is she attacks my cat on sight. Sometimes I can get her attention away from my cat with treats or food but it doesn't last very long and once she starts charging I can't distract her at all. I don't purposely let them together but my new cat, her name is Pim, slips out of the room without me being able to stop her.

I didn't let them see each other for two weeks and fed them on opposite sides of the door, and did scent swapping and all that. Pim really didn't seem to notice my other cat (Toonces) scent at all but I figured whatever. The first time they actually saw each other Pim hardly reacted and I fed them treats the whole time so I thought it went well. Toonces growled and hissed at her a few times and would run away but come back eventually. I've let them hang out in each others rooms to get more accustomed to each other's scents and give them as equal of time in the apartment alone as I can manage. It just seems like their relationship is getting worse and worse and I don't understand why. Do I need more patience? and take things slower than I already am? I don't want to resort to giving Pim away.

Also, they each have their own room they can stay in and I've also been using Feliway for almost the entire duration I've had pim but it hasnt seemed to do anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome, and thank you for taking in a baby that had a very poor future if it weren't for you!!  Thank you!!

It took my boys 7 months before they could be in the same area together for any length of time.  I would definitely say have patience...do it on their timetable....and keep site swapping.  It sounds like you are doing the right things--just watch and do not let them together.  Every time ours had a random, accidental encounter, it seemed to cause a setback of about 3-4 days in the progress we had made.

You can go through and read my threads I linked below to see our journey on integrating our cats, but honestly the best thing is just give it time.  LOTS of time.

And lots of patience.
