Hi, everyone

I am NEW to the site.

I have a 7 years old kitty who is IBD. She has been with us since she was 4 years old.

I need some help choosing the right new novel proteins for her.

We have fed the following meats. She threw it up or she was ok at the beginning but eventually threw up.

Chicken(canned, cooked and raw), Beef(canned),  Lamb (both canned and raw), Turkey (canned), rabbits (canned and raw), Venison(canned), Pheasant (cooked, raw)

We tried to feed her the following, but she did not even touch it.

Pork (canned), Elk (raw), Bison(raw), Goat(raw), Camel(raw), Alpaca(raw)

She has been eating Emu (raw, balanced) since this August, but started vomiting a couple month later with the frequency of two or three times a month.

We tried to introduce Phesant (raw) in September, but started vomitting pheasant two weeks later.

She has been taking homeopathy from our holistic vet since October and has not vomited yet this month (we keep our fingers crossed). The vet suggested staying with Emu for a while until she become stable, but we want to start looking for new proteins so that we can rotate it to prevent further problems.

Does anybody have any idea what novel proteins we should try?  Mice? Kangaroo, Quail, Cricket, Fish???

Please advise.

Thank you.

See this thread for suggestions: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/306947/your-favorite-brands-of-novel-protein-canned-cat-food

You might find other suggestions here: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/259215/the-great-protein-list

Are you looking for mainly canned and raw novel protein diets? Some of the really unusual novel proteins like mice and cavy are only available as raw meat. Hare-Today.com is one popular place to source these and other unusual proteins.

Have you tried toppers to entice your cat to at least give the "yucky" proteins a try?

Hello,

Thank you for suggestions. I am looking for raw proteins. She is chronically constipated so we feed her boneless ground meats. we have not tried the mouse, but do you think that the bones in the mice can be difficult to digest, especially for IBD cats??

We wanted her to eat duck or goose since they are novel to her, and hard to find "SAFE" topping for her because of her sensitivities. She loves raw eggs and butter (ghee) but throws them up.

I have ordered some rabbits from Haretoday before. I will look at their other meats. Thank you for providing the threads as well.

Toppers can be just 100% freeze dried meat or FortiFlora.

I found some threads on the raw fourm about feeding IBD cats raw diets:

I'm not sure if the ground mouse with bone from HT would cause an issue with IBD. Do you give your cat anything for the constipation? Some people give their constipation prone cats pumpkin puree or Miralax regularily.

Some people feel that giving their IBD cats and even just healthy cats a probiotic really helps with the digestive system. There are pet specific probiotics out there but many people just buy a Human grade one that doesn'st contain any ingredients that may be harmful to a cat. Here's an article that discusses probioticss for cats: http://www.rawfeedingforibdcats.org/probiotics-for-cats---why-and-which-ones.html You can discuss usign probiotics with the vet.

Thank you, again.

We cook any squash (acon squash, pumpkin) and feed her with the meal of Emu. Also give Ox Mag supplement if she does not have any stool for a couple of days. It works fine, but prefer avoiding bones, just in case.

Do you have any particular brand of freeze meat treats you recommend? I believe that I had this information before from somewhere else, but cannot find my notes.

Thank you!

My cat doesn't have IBD but tends to get constipated on the commercial raw cat foods (other than Rad Cat when he was eating it).

We have had no problem with HT's ground mouse. You could add a little bit of psyllium husk to the grind if you're concerned about constipation using a ground with bones.

Thank you for your inputs. Have you tried a whole mouse?
