Hi, I just bought a 5 month old siamese kitten. When I got her, she was infested with fleas and had diarrhea. The fleas have now been eradicated, but the diarrhea is a major problem. The owner said the diarrhea was "normal". Ive had my new kitten for 4 days. She was de - wormed and I sent in a fecal test which came back negative.

I took her to the vet yesterday. She has been on probiotics and a simple/special diet for over 24 hours and her stools are Still incredibly loose and smelly. Enough so to stink up my entire apartment. She goes multiple times a day, and the poops are liquidy, incredibly stinky and she has flatulence. She has no other symptoms, she is playful and energetic, eats and drinks normally.

but her butt is extremely filthy and she isn't cleaning it, so her feces gets on me and the furniture. She smells very bad when she's next to me, and it seems as though her butt is "leaking" poop when she is excited or affectionate. I am frankly repulsed by the poop being everywhere and smelling up my entire home. There is poop/poop juice left ANYWHERE she sits her bum down. I feel bad for her, but I also feel incredibly stressed by this. It's affecting my ability to bond with/be affectionate fully with my new cat.

I don't know what the problem is and I feel very upset that my new cat is having this problem and so dirty - which then makes me feel Guilty for feeling this way. I care about her and enjoy her personality but I feel so turned off by the poop getting all over me and the house that I find myself avoiding her. I've put sheets down on the furniture and will wipe her butt, but it just goes back to being filthy. I didn't know this would happen when i bought her (obviously) and it's causing me stress and then guilt for feeling repulsed.  I've been thinking about giving her away to someone else who wants her so they can deal with her poo problem, but i feel bad doing that too.

is it possible that this is just how her poop is and always will be and nothings wrong? because right now that seems to be the case, and i just simply can't deal with that, and the constant stress of worrying that her poop is getting on everything i own.

This is my first kitten. Please help.

The probiotics worked well for me with my Mingo, who had the same problem. Your kitten's food may also be the problem. When I first got Mingo, I fed him wet food, and it turned out that was the culprit. I kept him on dry for several months, and then worked in the wet a spoonful at a time. You don't say what you're feeding him, but try something else. You can also add a teaspoonful of pumpkin - the kind to make pies with. It also helps with diarrhea.

She was on "purina pet chow" which was solid, according to the old owner, but since i took her to the vet, she has been on a wet food designed to help with diarrhea and go with the probiotics. it is called Hills digestive care. She's supposed to be on it for 1 more day, then i switch to whichever dry food I want.

I would put her on the dry right away. Choose something that is grain-free, and add the pumpkin. The better pet stores have powdered pumpkin in packets.

Grain free is a must, Orijen is considered by many to be the best dry food available. What type of fecal test was done? a standard float test can miss many types of parasites.  I suspect it might be Giardia

I would highly recommend a grain free canned food, or since she's a kitten, Royal Canin kitten food both canned and dry.  It could be that the food is the culprit, especially if it's dry and you didn't do a gradual change.  I would also ask the vet to do the PCR diarrhea panel to make sure it's not some kind of parasite that's not covered on the in-house fecal float test.  I also am suspecting giardia.

I just got home today after changing her diet to dry food. Her last meal was given at 6 pm, it's been almost 3 hours. i left the house, and came back to find her rear end incredibly wet and filthy, watery, smelly poop juice soaking her fur and coming out of her. it smells HORRIBLE. im taking her back to the vet tomorrow. im not sure if  i was sold a sick kitten, or if it's possible that this is just how she is

i feel really bad because i cannot be fully affectionate to her or let her sleep with me in this state, and i often have to push her rear end away from me to avoid getting poop on me. i feel so bad for this cat, and for me. im so stressed over this, and i really can't afford to do a billion tests on her and cure a sick cat, as i am a student. i don't know what to do!

First off, the breeder should give you some money back for all of this!

Secondly, don't stress---this can happen. We had a siamese and she had a similar issue--totally diet related. Kittens tummies are like babies and not all react well to certain foods. Every kitten I've had got the runs from Science Diet and Iams catfood.

There is an anti-diarrhea drug --it's actually an antibiotic called metrinitozole--my boy has been on it for a week for diarrhea associated with pancreatitis.  I would ask your vet about that.

Next, lots and lots of towels and an old duvet to throw over your things so you can cuddle with the kitty and not worry about getting things dirty. Get some air freshners or just a candle and baking soda is your best friend. Also, you can have a special wash cloth to clean kitty's tushie--just gentle warm water and don't over do it as her tushie is probably tender.

Hugs to you!!!

I'm sending hugs to you, too. This is dreadful to go through. I hope tomorrow's vet can help you through this so you can love and snuggle with your kitty.

Hello all, I put my kitten on metranodozle and marquis mixture. she's been on it for a week, and it did indeed stop the diarrhea. but i am realizing that there is a bigger issue to this than i thought. Even when she hasn't gone to the bathroom, I've noticed that her butthole starts to get brown crust around it's outer edges...within a short amount of time. it's really irritating because the diarrhea has stopped, and i have no idea what is going on. Here i have posted a new thread detailing the problem.
