We're going to be seeing weather related to tropical depression 9 all week- lots of rain. Anyone in drought country want some? It will be in the upper 80's so it will be a rather sultry week. Nice and humid.

I just look at the bright side. We don't get snow. Ever.

send us some of that rain here to sunny California, we don't get snow either but on top of the mountains where people go for skiing.

Today is beautiful, somewhat dry, but hot air with occasional beautiful breeze in Northeast US.  The sky is so blue and it is very clear air.

I like ice, it is wonderful to run on, much easier than walking on ice!

Not so much fun of snow though.

Last night we had below freezing temps, no insects to bother with until late afternoon and even then very small amount, so it is getting a lot better now.

Wow. Below freezing temps in August.
It is quite normal to have below freezing temps during the nights here, only July is month that there is not such, most of the summers, but usually other months have at least one below freezing temperature night.

Daytime temps are still quite high, today has been 59F and not even rain even forecast was most of day being rain.

You might like south part of Finland better, I doubt that they have even yellow leaves yet while here some tree species are almost completely without leaves already, summer is about 2 months longer there.

I just wonder how anything grows at all with at least one freezing night a month, no growing tomatoes for you!

Weather still absolutely beautiful here in Nebraska, highs in the low 80's and lows in the low 60's.  I harvested bigger than dinner plate sunflower heads off my three foot tall Sunspot sunflowers, I'll feed them to the cardinals and squirrels this winter. Got a wheelbarrow full!  I LOVE FALL!!!!

Tomatoes does not really grow, only in greenhouse at south wall at some years I might get small tomatoes, if it is warm autumn, they tend to get ripe only after growth season ends and need to bring them in to ripe. Potatoes on a good year might come out ok, but mostly not so well.

Move mile away and potatoes grow just fine, I live kind of bottom of a bowl so all the cold end ups here, it is 5 to 10 degrees colder on my yard than at neighbor's yard less than a mile away, because it is uphill to his place.

I have pretty much given up of growing anything because of this cold spot.

At best I get 2.5 to 3 months without freezing temps during the night as it is beginning of June to end of August where freezing temps occur, but yeah, it is bit short season and all the blood sucking insect know it, so they come with force for that about 2 months time.

I can't imagine what it would be to live at place where one could grow something year around, could grow oranges and all kind of yummy stuff, like hot peppers, chili and such.

Most traditional food here is pretty lame, maybe because those spicy things don't grow here, so traditionally seasoning has been pretty much none, but I like spicy.

It seems we got another rain, almost every day it rains, one of the most cloudy nations they say.

Tell us just what does grow in your part of Finland, I mean in the way of vegetables. Something must be growing there or people would not have been living there for centuries. Do you have forests and with what kind of trees? Leaves or needles? Any bushes with edible berries? The rest of the world, even Europe, does not know much about Finland.

Lots of stuff grows at southern parts, some veggies grow even here (carrots, some potatoes), but success is depending quite a lot from what kind of weather is as weather is quite variable and years are not brothers, my yard is in such place that it is one of the coldest spots locally.

Alaska is quite similar from what I have seen from videos, except we have less bears and guns and lot smaller area, but trees are lot of same and we mostly have forests and lakes.

I took these pics at one of the warmest days of the summer.
Lots of swamps here too:

These trees does not grow at northern part:

Grass eaters grow here, so people have been hunters, also rye grows, but there is huge difference between southern part and northern part, at south growth season is a lot longer and they can grow even Chili there if using green house.

Last night temp was 38 degrees (3.5C), at ground level it might of been very close to freezing, which is nice, no mosquitoes for better part of the day.

Thank you so much,JTbo, it is SO interesting to learn about another part of the world! One part of me feels sorry for you for not being able to grow so much and enjoy it, another envies you for NOT having to grow all that and weed, and water, and YOU GET RAIN!!!
I enjoy cooler weather so much more than a hundred degrees, the weather sounds pretty nice there right now.   Your trees are beautiful!

Thank you, JTbo, for the lovely pictures. Having grown up in Germany I always pictured Finland as being covered with many lakes and forests of both pine and oak and other leafy trees such as birch. I guess birches might grow there and larches (that's a tree with needles but it sheds those like leaf trees do) and some pines. Never thought of Finland being more like Alaska. Can you give us a town where you live so we can look it up on a map and maybe Google Earth it? I'm a great fan of Google Earth since my family is scattered all over the globe and you can take a virtual road trip just by using Google Earth.
