If mom's nipples are over engorged and hard, she may have Mastitis or it may be hard for the kitten to latch on.  You can put a warm, not hot damp cloth on her nipples to help soften and soothe.  If she will let you try to express some milk by gently squeezing the nipple to let some out.  If it is mastitis, mom will need a vet for antibiotics.  The infected nipple will be red and warm/hot.  You will need to feed the kitten for a few days because the infection can harm it.

Not sure if I saw this in any of the posts, but when feeding the kitten, hold it on a flat (warm) surface with tummy down and head up like it is feeding at mom.  It will take practice and a little time to get it right.  Don't panic, just take your time and don't rush it.

I want to note that engorgment ( overly full mom) and mastitis ( infection of a duct)are very differant, wet warm cloths will help both mum will have a fever if it is mastitis ;although one can lead to the other . Also Humans have been adviced to nurse threw mastitis since the 80's and that the milk will not harm their babies so why would it harm kittens?
Relies this thread is about a mother not interested in nursing but should she start again that be good[emoji]128522[/emoji]

Maybe put awet, warm washcloth over your cat's nipples and see if it softens up her milk sacs

I'm not exactly sure why kittens are not supposed to nurse when mom has mastitis.  It could be because the kittens can get very ill quickly and it's not easy for them to get well.  It could be feline mastitis is different from the human form.  It could be the antibiotic used to clear it up.  Vets recommend no nursing, why risk it?

I have always been told that the infection in the mammary duct can taint the milk and, thus, make the kittens very ill.

The two mommas we have had that developed mastitis developed abscesses that ruptured right next to the nipples. You certainly wouldn't want a kitten ingesting that.

If the kitten has trouble with the needle-less syringe or whatever bottle you may have bought you can try one of those wedge shaped makeup sponges.  The kitten can latch onto a corner of that and you can keep adding KMR at the other end.

It sounds like the mother is inexperienced and may have been spooked by the deaths of the first two.  She may just be uncertain what to do.  Even though she's hiding the kitten you need to keep an eye on them and make sure the kitten is getting food.  It's good that the mother is trying to warm the kitten and clean its little bottom.  And it's a very good sign that they're sleeping together.  If the kitten were hungry I would have expected it to latch onto a teat as soon as its Mom fell asleep.  Also, it's a good thing that the mom brought her kittens to you.  It means that she trusts you to take care of them.  Don't let the fact that she now hides the kitten faze you; that's just instinct, and it may mean that her maternal instincts are finally kicking in and she may be ready to take over.

I'm glad you found this site when you needed us.  Keep us informed, please.  And expect us to bug you for lots of cute kitten pictures once the crisis is past.  We're all suckers for kitten pictures.

Please keep us informed. Where are you located?

Try ti get a vet to help out, call a few and see if one is willing to help you out and help this little guy survive.

I've had luck with some vets helping when in need, don't know why but the expensive ones and in fancy places usually don't want to, it is usually the vets with little shops in a no so nice part of town that help out. I would call a few and see if they are willing to do a good deed, you have nothing to lose.

Are mom and kitten safe in the cabinet? If not, I would move them to a room with a more appropriate nest and close the door. Moms like nests that are dark and private, like a closet with a door ajar. You can also make sure her food, water, and litter box are in that room for easy access.

How much have you been feeding the baby and how often?

Try rubbing more honey/syrup on its gums.

Is the baby warm?
