Hello everyone!  In my first post, I'd like to ask your opinions on my new kitten. The girl I got her from said that she was a short hair kitten from 2 Persians, and attached a couple (albeit horrible quality photos). She also said there was a long haired brother. Can you tell me if 2 long haired cats can have a short haired kitten. IS she short haired? Her tail is short haired it seems and her face, but she's started getting some longer hairs that kinda stick up more so on the back towards the bottom half. She was wormy and I just finished treating her for that. I found her on Craigslist. I know, I know.... but I saw her face in this pic and felt like she was mine.

The fur may get longer with time.  We had seen examples of this, a typical shorthair kitten become longhair when adult.   I joked it must be either the gypsies or the trolls whom changed out the kitten into another...   :)

The kittens here are apparently  points (thus you can call them for himalayans if you so wish).   ONE in a litter of non points, isnt that unusual, if parents are carriers.  But it seems all three are points...  So parents must be points them too after all.  Or at least, one is, and the second is a carrier...

I would say she is definitely a longhair, and the longhair  coat varies a lot with the Persian breeds, some having very long coats and some having much shorter coats.  Points, when the cooler parts of the body are a darker color than the rest, is a recessive gene, which means that the parents can carry it without it necessarily showing, i.e. the Dad and Mom cats here.  Each of them must have an ancestor or parent that is pointed, and so the kittens are all pointed.  Originally the pointed longhaired cats were a separate breed called Himalayans.  Later, they were merged with the Persians and now they are considered a class of the Persian.  Both parents in your picture look Persian, so I would say you have color point Persians.  Of course you do not have papers so even if they are purebred, they would not be considered so for show or breeding purposes.  I cannot tell for sure in the photos, but I think she may be a lynx point because I see tabby markings on her tail and legs which will get a lot darker with age.  Those are some gorgeous kittens!

So you agree RTR, parents dont looks  points, they must be "merely" carriers.   The statistical outcome of two carriers mating, is one kitten of four whom is pointed, the rest are not pointed - altough there will be carriers 1:2:1.   With 3 kittens and all three pointed is not common even if the statistics arent ironclad,   I was a little too cathegorical in my previous post.  It is of course fully possible, but the moneybetting is heavily against such outcome.

But perhaps there were other kittens too in that litter, but not shown?

To be honest, I'm putting a lot of faith into the fact that's the dad. The girl owned the Mom but not the father. If it is the father, I realize the picture quality if so bad you can't even really tell with certainty what color he is. I'm sorry if I'm confusing in the OP, there's only 2 kittens, my female and a fluffier male! I posted 2 pics that included him. She said there was only those 2. I DO think Winky (my girl) might be a tabby/lynx point, she has faint striped coloring on her legs and tail.

I'm going to post some better pictures of Winky this evening! Whatever she is, I adore her. She's really relaxed most of the time (occasional kitten antics) and follows me around. She also seems to come when called about 75% of the time haha. My family are mostly "dog people," we have Shih Tzus and my brother has a British Shorthair, but I'm delighted with her. She'll be spayed once it's safe and a companion.

I think the daddy cat looks like a point. It's a terrible fuzzy picture but if you look at his ears they look darker than the rest of him, and his nose and paws. . .he's maybe flame point, so it's not as noticable in the fuzziness of the picture. Which would mean the girl kitten would have to be tortie point, and while I can't guarantee it, she kind of looks tortie.

For that matter, Mom could be a cream point.  I thought she was just a cream, but now that we are questioning color, she could be a cream point.

Here we go, more pics! Taken just now :) Sorry her eyes are a bit crusty, I've been wiping them with a damp cotton ball, but it's a constant battle. I'm also getting her into the vet because I noticed she's developed some sort of issue on her upper lip where it's darkened and looks maybe like a fungus.

Springy hairs on her back!

TOES! She's got a couple little pink patches, like you can see on the left one here.

Those guys know more than most about colors, patterns, and genetics!  I just came along for the kitten pics!  But welcome to the site, and your kitten is beautiful!  BTW...those precious toes are often referred to as jellybeans, and they come in two flavors...cotton candy (pink) and licorice (black)...and the occasional spotty one!

Thank you! As a "dog person," I've been surprised how quickly and how much I love this little one. She's just so sweet and entertaining :)

Thanks for the reply! So far she's still about the same in hair length, but I'm still dealing with some type of fungus on her legs, tail, and between her shoulder blades, getting her dewormed, and some weight on her tiny little bones.

Are you sure its fungus? She's a colorpoint so her markings on her face, legs, tail and ears will darken as she ages.

If it is not just her fur color. Maybe you could ask the vet about the possibility of her having a yeast infections (sometimes when cats get yeast infections, it causes this black goop to form on their bodies).

Also, the mother cat looks to be a flame point or a cream point.

After looking at the photos again, I believe she will be long haired - maybe not the dripping, hair to the floor  type, but she isn't going to be the typical short haired cat either. Did  the vet do a fungal test? Whatever, she is adorable!!!

She has bald and/or crusty spots on 3 legs and now her tail. I also ordered some Dechra DermaBenSs shampoo and Limeplus Dip because  I have a hard time getting the Miconazole on her legs and tail where the areas are completely covered. Does that look ringworm-y?

Thank you for your help! :)
