Do you let your cat sleep in your bed with you at night?

I need to snip Connor's and Murphy's claws again.  Connor's because his get insanely long and once, he had a nail get caught in the carpet and break.  I'm sure it must have hurt.  My poor baby!  And Murphy's because he kneads with claws and he likes to walk all over me and if he feels unbalanced, they come out.  I have scratches all over my chest and legs.  Connor walks on me, too, but he must be more confident in his steadiness or something.  Mickey doesn't have any claw issues so we don't bother clipping his.

@Golondrina  yes you can clip their claws...check out youtube on how to clip kittens claws. you only want to cut the tips-just like our nails=we don't cut beyond the white part-cat's are the same-they have the tips then the bloodvessel part.

And I didn't know about the above-^^^^ I never clip honeybee's nails because she don't let me, and she goes outside so Jon thinks she is better to have them sharp so she can defend herself..I tried to tell him that doesn't make a difference..Pumpkin let's me cut hers-she's easy..I just forget to do it because she is always sleeping when I want to clip them and I don't want to disturb her.

Here is a diagram to show you how the claws are made up with a blood vessel.  I use toe nail clippers because I have better control of them but make sure they are not dull-they don't stay sharp for long it seems with the newer ones. They do sell these pliars that are made for cutting. you can try those-my hands are too small to hold it and try to get the nail to extend.

I found this interesting tidbit:

Sit her on your lap, put a piece of uncooked spaghetti into the clippers and hold them near your cat. (If she sniffs the clippers, set a treat on top of them for her to eat.) Next, while massaging one of your cat's toes, gently press her toe pad.

I guess the spaghetti is to distract the cat from the clippers? But it's a good idea...

Thanks Foxxycat for the info regarding the way to clip the cats' claws. Actually Cucumella has now understood that she can roam around the bed but that head and face are out of bonds. I was wondering about people reporting their cats stepping on their heads without being scratched..

Thank you Tarasgirl06, I have ordered ffrom Amazon the clippers you recommended.    Delivery is long for Montevideo.  I don't have great hopes to persuade Cucumella to cooperate but nothing lost trying. Will report my resultats.

Thanks to all of you offering opinion and info.

Glad to be of help!  Some experts suggest waiting until your cat is sleepy and/or comfortable, and then trying just one or two claws at a time.  I have varying success with clipping myself, from those who fight me tooth and claw
to those who are very relaxed and comfortable with me doing both fronts and backs.  I usually try to combine the less-than-loved claw clipping with much-loved brushing, as a reward, especially after they let me clip.  It's a ritual with us, and usually done sitting on the toilet in the master bathroom, because the floor is tile and it's easy to sweep up the claw tips afterward.  I keep grooming tools in a drawer in there for those times.  I hope it doesn't take a long time for your clippers to arrive -- a lot of international shipping is actually faster than some local shipping here at least -- and that you enjoy using them.  Cucumella will be a much more sought-after bed partner with comfortable, clipped claws, I predict

I concur with @Tarasgirl06 on the methods and problems of nail clipping.

There is nothing like the shock of a stretching cat giving you a double pawful of claw tips in the hiney to wake you up from a sound sleep. Sugar and Spice both like to sleep under the covers and are not fussy where the paws go.

(I copied my post from another thread)

I used to clip my boy's nails when he is asleep. Now he has gotten use to the clipper and I don't have to wait till he's asleep. He'll watch me hold his paw and clip his nails now.
I gotten him to get use to the clipper by letting him smell it without cutting any nails and after that I'll just keep the clipper. Then I let him get use to me by holding his paw and pressing gently to get the claws out. I do that a few times and then say good boy and walked away. I repeated this two actions for several days.
Then the next time was with the clipper, let him smell, touch paw and gently press and clip one nail. Repeated this several times till he got use to it and now whenever I need to clip his nails, I just go straight to it.
Don't rush into it and finish the four paws in a few days till your kitty is ok with nail clipping and you can do it at one go. Just make sure you get a good pair of clippers and watch for the 'quick' in the claws.

Good luck and be careful. Just the tip of the claw; if you get the "quick" the cat will hate that . . . and let you know, I rather aggressively I suspect.

Interesting. I've never had a problem with an older cat getting crazy with the claws; I've sometimes had a problem with kittens, which they eventually stop.

I wouldn't say Cucumella gets crazy with her claws. She is in fact very gentle. i have never known her to show any aggressiveness to any one even in a playful way. . The problem used t o be when she walked over the pillows (a total of 6, 3 on each side of the bed, with me sleeping in the middle) to get from one side of the bed to the other stepping on my head and face. It was a question of clumsiness not of agressiveness or foolish behaviour.

The problem is now over because she has now understood that the pillows and head are out of bonds as I mentioned in other posts. Thanks for being concerned DoomsDay, I appreciate it.

We have two that sleep with us. About thirty minutes before bedtime they come into the room and stare us down, walking back and forth to the bedroom. They also go looking for a person if they are not quick enough to get into bed. Then they both jump up, find their spots, one on the bottom of the bed, one in the middle and throw themselves down like they are totally beat. Then about thirty minutes before wake up time they walk on us and meow softly to wake us up.  I am thankful not all 5 sleep with us, we wouldn't be able to move!
Isn't that the truth. We have five now and two are dedicated to bed time. We actually upgraded to a king-size bed so my wife and I still had room enough for us to get into bed. The two that sleep with us at night like to sleep all over the place, although one of them (my Scooter pictured below) tends to settle down with me once I get comfortable. And she is the one who will pace constantly until we go to bed. Once we head that direction she pops up on the bed and impatiently waits until we climb in to bed then proceeds to lay down right where we are getting ready to lay. Guess who has to adjust?

I put a pillow over my head.  I'm a side sleeper, and it helps protect my face basically from being cold, but also from any wayward paws and claws

;)  Oh, yeah!  I think quite a few of us have upgraded to King beds for exactly that reason.  There have been as many as 9 documented on ours at one time.  I consider myself the "hot rock for cats" (like the warmer you put in with reptiles) and consider that my most important job.
*A nice little group*
I roughly counted that there are at least 20 cats on that bed! :jump:
