I want to get a fitbit so I can see just how much I am walking. I walked to a play group with my kids this morning, to the park this afternoon and downtown after dinner. I'm exhausted tonight but I always sleep good after a busy day.

I want one of these too. Maybe I should put my order in for Mother's Day.

On one busy day I walked almost constantly and got:
5 hours 59 minutes active time tracked
5520 steps counted
2.84 km measured in steps
2479 kilocalories burned

I was very tired after that day.

Using chainsaw is easy way to get ton of steps, vibration counts as steps, one day when chopping firewood is like this:
7 hours 58 minutes active time tracked
26780 steps counted
18.31 km measured in steps
5871 kilocalories burned
7 hours 16 minutes sleep last night 5 hours 48 minutes restful sleep 1 hours 28 minutes restless sleep
80 % restful sleep

I still had ton of energy left after that day, sure I felt workout next day, but I did not walk as much as of day in first example.

So trackers show how active one is, but without foot pod there is always certain level of error, I doubt very much that I have walked over 18km without leaving my yard, that would be something like 450 times around the yard carrying wood half of the time, it just is not possible in given time as splitting of round would take at least 3 minutes and it would mean more than 450 rounds being split, which I don't see happening, it would take lot more than theoretical minimum of 22 hours and one should add time to walk and carry the round and also cutting the round.

So, while they give you idea of activity level, they don't give accurate amount of walked daily unless one only walks, or that at least is my experience.

That said, I think those trackers are great, they do encourage to move more, at least I don't like to see in my monthly calendar those less than 100% activity goal reached days, I prefer those days with over 500% ;D

For last 3 days I have got:
54788 steps counted
36.45 km measured in steps

That would mean over 12km walked each day, but in reality it is much more arms swinging and shaking around and less walking, but I guess, all movement counts :)

For me it has been exercising 16-20 hours in a week for each week of around last 5 weeks, 1st day of this month I managed to get upper body quite sore and I can still feel it, but I guess it means there will be some gains too.

I doubt that without tracker I would of been able to reach such amount of exercising, so it does help to motivate for sure.

150 cost was a lot, but as I get heart rate and gps both, so I can see on map where I had high and low heart rate, it has helped me to get faster with the bike, I know where I need to push more and so on.
So there are lot of good points with trackers, but I think it is good to know their downfalls too, also others are better and others are worse in estimation, however all of them will be more off more one moves arms (more like the arm where tracker is) without walking.

Have to run for now.

I'm old fashioned. I get in the car and retrace my steps to see how far I walk or run :lol3: when my kids were small I'd load them up in the car too. :lol3:

10 miles on Tuesday; that's the first time I hit 10 miles, I think, since that knee operation a few years back.

3 miles on the treadmill in the morning before work (about 45 minutes)

3.5 miles walked during my lunch break (about 55 minutes, give or take)

3.5 miles walked last night, in between the rain showers (about 50 minutes, give or take)

According to my Fitbit, 10.4 miles = 23,501 steps.

So, if you spread it out, it's not that bad. And while my knees won't allow me to run, I can walk very, very fast. I keep fast-paced songs on my iPod and walk in time to the music. My sister said she saw me out one night and she said I was doing everything but running. She didn't know I could cruise like that.
Treadmill is set at a 4% incline, not bad at all, and I walk at 4 mph, which might be considered a slow jog. (I can't set the treadmill any higher than that because it's old and once I start playing around it, weird things start to happen. So I just keep the incline at 4% and deal with it that way.)

And yes, Jackie is in the house; we won't take her out on that road....we just won't. As for the cats, it is what it is. These last several months have been emotionally messy and I need some time to myself. I don't feel guilty.

As for the Fitbit, it's off a bit. But actually, it's not clocking everything I really do walk. For every 3 miles I get in, the Fitbit says it's only 2.74 miles. I know the distances that I walk because I've been walking those routes for about 15 years now. I have my iPod in sync with my treadmill and they're both saying 3 miles in the morning. I know that my lunch route is 3 miles; if I go through the park, that's an extra half-mile. And I know that my route in the evening at my house is 3.2 miles and if I get past just a few more houses down the road, I can get an extra half-mile. Before I got my Fitbit, I did what Tammat did....got in the car and clocked it. I also checked the routes with http://www.mapmywalk.com/ to see what was going on. So I do know what I'm walking.

And I don't walk like that every day. Mostly when things are really stressing me out, then I'll go out for a while. When it gets really, really warm and humid outside, I don't walk much during lunch, largely because of sweating and then having to come into work in the afternoon. Most days I only walk about 5-6 miles; I still need to keep an eye on that knee. And I'm 61 years old, so I know that I need to get my walking in while I still can!

I just love walking. Singing to the music, clearing my head out, not thinking about anything. It's just nice to get outside and go.

I cannot say enough about the Fitbit. I love that thing. I think I mentioned that I have the Charge now and I really like it. But until you get a Fitbit, check out http://www.mapmywalk.com/ . You can create an account and put in some routes. You'll have a great idea of how many miles you're walking.

I'd really like to get the new Fitbit Blaze.

I can't do that here, we have a lot of paths that you can't drive on. Our parks in this area are all connected by paths and you can start at one end and walk right through.

I looked at the Fitbit on Wal Mart website. They have several and I really don't know what to look for. Can anyone give me some tips here. They even have one that measures sleep.

Barbara, I started out with a Fitbit Flex and that was fine. If you don't mind a wristband, get that one. You simply wear it on your non-dominant wrist and you can wear your watch with it, if you'd like. The Flex will track your steps, your mileage, your active minutes, and (supposedly) your sleep. If you do wear it to bed, you can set it to awaken you at a certain time; it will vibrate. It is not water-proof, but it is water-resistant. It tracks calories burned. The band comes in Small and Large; I'm using the Large size.

For the Flex, there are a few different wristband colors now, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding a color that you like. When I was using the Flex, I used to switch the wristbands. With the Fitbit Charge, I only have black.

I don't think it does a great job of monitoring sleep, but that's just me. If you use an elliptical, the Flex doesn't do a great job of monitoring elliptical usage. I think it actually worked better when I took it off my wrist and threw it into my pants pocket. It doesn't check floors either.

Fitbit says the battery lasts about five days. Most of the time, I only needed to charge the Flex once a week and I usually did that on Sunday night. I still charge my Fitbit Charge on Sunday nights and I get a week with one charge. You do need to set up a Fitbit account on your computer and, if you have a smartphone, you can also download the Fitbit app to your smartphone and keep track that way as well as your computer. Computerwise, I had no trouble with Vista and Fitbit, nor do I have any problems with Windows 8 or Windows 10 and the Fitbit. You charge the Fitbit by hooking it into a USB port on your computer.

I like having the smartphone Fitbit app. I'll come in from my walk and it will sync and then tell me how close I am to my goals for the day. And when I've gone over my goals, I get a notification of being an "Over-achiever".  When you meet certain step amounts, you'll get an email from Fitbit with badges. With the Flex, it was just distance badges; now that I have the Charge, I also get badges for floors. I just got my Helicopter Badge....that means that I've climbed enough floors to equal the distance that a helicopter flies in the sky. It's kind of dorky, but anything to help keep you going, I guess.

You will need to set it up on your computer. You will also need to go outside and measure your steps so that the Fitbit can keep a more accurate track of your walking. You will need to set your goals on the computer, how many steps you want for the week, how many per day, and so on. When you reach your step goal for the day, the Fitbit will vibrate to tell you. I always think that's kind of neat.
And I have found that if I'm close to my step goal and only have a couple hundred steps to go, I'll either walk around the house or walk outside to get my steps in.

When I got the Charge, I set aside the Flex for Rick to use, but, so far, he hasn't done anything with it. If I knew for a fact that he won't be using the Flex, I'd send it down to you because I'm not using it and it's just sitting on his desk. He says he's going to get around to using it, so we'll see. That Flex wasn't even used for a full year; when my first Flex died, Fitbit sent me a brand new one.....for free. They're a good company to work with.

My Charge does everything the Flex does; in addition, it counts floors, too. The Charge has a clock; the Flex does not. The Charge also has Caller ID, but I didn't set it up.

You'll get an email from Fitbit every week, telling you how well you did the previous week. I get my emails on Tuesday mornings.

There are other activity trackers out there. I went with the Fitbit and it seems to do its job. Like I said earlier, I'd like to have the new Fitbit Blaze, but that's just because I really like the way it looks.

Keep your eyes open; you can find them on sale from time to time.

Call me and I'll do my best to answer your questions and to help you.

2 hours and 20 minutes bike riding, heart rate was 90% of my maximum as an average for that time.

At the morning I got over 26km/h (~16.2mph) average speed for 1 hour of riding, when I came back there was head wind and I had 9kg (19.8 pounds) of meat in bicycle bag, also it is more uphill when coming back so average speed was only around 22km/h (13.7mph), got bit of leg burn on few hills.

So I got new record time, almost half came off from last record which I did ride 2 years ago.

I got over 20 000 steps even I haven't walked much at all today, just rode my bike ;D

I walked 2.9 km this morning according to Google fit. I'm not sure how accurate that is since its just an app on my phone but it seems pretty close. We will walk more this afternoon if it doesn't rain.

I don't know about you guys, but I think I have earned one glass of nice cold sparkling soda. Went for another bike ride and even for run.

Today's totals are:
42635 steps
6140 calories

Today 4 hours and 5 minutes of cycling, that is 90km (~56 miles), average speed for all that was 22km/h (13.7mph), after that 20 minutes running and after that 12 minutes of brisk walking as it got bit dark near midnight and there was rough gravel so I resorted to walking for part of last lap.

I could of kept running longer, felt still strong, but bit too dark.

All it takes is loads of food and lot of determination, you can do it too!

I'm getting jealous of all your activity. I still have a cold, I just can't seem to shake it. I went for a gentle 30 minute walk yesterday, but it left me gasping for breath and coughing again.

I've been spending my free time re-organising my wardrobe, packing away my winter clothes, hanging up my summer clothes, repairing, dyeing a few old t-shirts emerald green and Windsor purple, cutting up one old pair of jeans to patch the holes in a slightly newer pair, made a yoga mat bag and a sun-glasses case out of the rest of the old jeans..................

Yep, I'm really bored.

Umm, you know, all that counts as an activity :lol3:

It seems I'm not sore at all today, does that mean I have to more and even harder? I hope there is gain without getting sore or I'm quite stuck.

Norachan Norachan :hugs: hope you feel better soon. I always get envious of people out running even if I've had a run that day :lol3: You've got many days ahead until you're 100 :lol3:

I still have a bit of a cold type thing and it was cold this morning so I didn't know how I was going to rev myself up to do legs but the afternoon was actually very nice so I did my legs then TORQ shoulders. One round of 30/ 20/ 15 reps was pretty good without doing heavy sets first so I did it again. The second time round was a lot harder.

Good news is my functional trainer was delivered today.
Not so good news is that it's in 1000 pieces :lol3: That's a job for the weekend.

Oh I just noticed little Webby photo bombed the top pic. I didn't even know she was there.
You can't have all those cardboard boxes around and expect the cats to stay away.

Can't wait to see what it looks like when you've put it together.

worked out like like a beast Monday but yesterday not so well. Or maybe I need to rest my muscles more than one day. Yesterday I couldn't get past 65 lbs for the row. Where Monday I did 70-80? I forget what it was. but I definitely was not moving as fast. Even the elliptical machine-I just kept heart rate at 120-125. So maybe I need to read up on how to maximize the rest days. But I realy like working out daily-makes me feel less lazy. If I don't workout for one day then I feel like I will give up easier. So maybe this weekend will try walking around the neighborhood..change of scenery.

I did about 45 min of weights on my arms-chest/shoulders/back/arms.  I was sore afterwards. and this morning sore but once I took a hot shower it is gone. So tonight is legs. Probably squats/lunges with weights-and try again for another 45 min on the elliptical and 25-30 min of dance on my break. Someday the weight will drop. For now I rather be strong than thin. So my goal is still lifting heavier weights...I am amazed how many weeks it takes to do this.

Keep it up!

You need to cycle things, do legs, rest legs and do upper body or something like that.

So after yesterday I did only around 4000 calorie day, chopped firewood quite a bit, it was so hot, +20 in shade, I had to take shirt off and still felt it being bit too warm. How I'm going to manage warmer days, I have no idea, because I won't loose my bike shorts, then I would have nothing on, so I need to find better way to deal with the heat.

Exercising only helps with weight loss, it does not cause lot of weight loss by itself, reason is that even for me my exercising is not more than 30% of daily burned energy, but even half from that is a lot of work, usually it is under so that is why proper diet is so important, sure exercising helps, but often getting tired by doing exercising reduces other activity even without one realizing it and it is quite small addition to daily energy burn when that happens.
