Hi!

I have an approximately 3-year-old boy (standard rescue, not a specific breed)... he's had problems with soft stools off and on for most of his life. He's sort of a nervous boy. After many fecal tests (negative for parasites) and blood tests (also normal, thank god) the specialist said it's most likely due to his rather anxious personality, and the fact that my girl cat tends to dominate him at feeding time (have tried separating them... it's not easy. He panics if I try to shut him in a room at feeding, and she raises a ruckus if I lock her in the bathroom, to where he runs away)... so anyway, I recently had some foster kittens for a brief time and right after the fosters he developed awful yellow diarrhea, would strain to get a little bit out, and cry and hiss after. It was scary and heartbreaking. Took him to the vet, and $220 later I left with a negative fecal,  metronizale, and an opioid pain mediation. I have to take him in for an ultrasound soon... It's all getting incredibly expensive. I feed them freeze dried raw turkey with a decent amount of water, pure vita dry food while i'm at work, and a little Weruva paw lickin chicken canned food sometimes because my boy doesn't always love the turkey. I've started probiotics this week in the hope that it will help, plus some pumpkin the last few days... so for a few days after the start of probiotics he pooped out a LOT of soft diarrhea stool... and all of a sudden today he keeps going back to the litter box like he wants to go but can't. there is some diarrhea in the box when i scooped it. should i take him to the emergency vet? i feel like this situation has drained me. i have to go on a 2-week business trip sunday -- i can't not go. my cat sitters will give him probiotics etc but should i be worried? i feel like all the vet does is suggest more tests that tell me nothing, or try to sell me prescription food (that i tried, but made his diarrhea worse) -- help

I feel I should add: he generally acts just fine. Like last night he was relaxed and tummy up on the living room rug. Is he just adjusting to the probiotic? It's a acidophilus and bifidus mix... Natural Factors. He's been on that for like 2-3 days... Tried Proviable for the first few days but the ingredients freaked me out. What is "animal digest" anyway?

Hello, my kitty has ALWAYS had soft stools/diarrhea ever since I took him home a couple months ago.  He also acts fine and dandy and is free of parasites. I tried everything you mentioned up above.  What finally worked for my kitty in the end is feeding a mixture of raw and canned food.  My kitty can't seem to handle processed food very well; as a result he needs to have more than 50% of his diet to be from raw sources.  I feed him primal nuggets.  Check any of your independent pet stores.  It is available frozen or freeze dried.  Freeze dried is a lot more expensive.  If I mix 2 ounces of raw turkey nuggets with 1.5 ounces of high quality canned turkey food 2x a day my kitty seems to do fine.  And also I've read that there might be an adjustment period for probiotics because the cats gut will be ridding itself of all the bad bacteria.  Also, S. Boulardi is a probiotic strain that is known as an emergency diarrhea stopper.  Try googling it.  It seems to me that once health concerns are ruled out raw food is the answer.  I didn't even bother trying out a rawfood/dry food combo because dry food is extremely processed and not natural at all.

Thanks for the suggestion! I've been feeding the primal as my freeze dried turkey raw... The dry I put out mainly as something to graze on when I'm at work. Maybe I should just stop the dry all together?
Glad to know the probiotics need a little more time. I wasn't able to find out how long it should take by looking online. He was given a bunch of anti parasite meds and antibiotics when he first developed problems... So I guess he has a couple of years of imbalance to work through... If I didn't have to leave town I don't think I'd be quite so stressed about it.

I'll just ask my cat sitters to feed wet only I guess?
Or would another brand be good for later? Maybe evo?
Having dry to put out when I have to work a lot of hours and can't be home to feed wet twice daily is hugely helpful to me, but I don't want to hurt my cats' health for my own convenience
(In the past I tried an all rabbit diet (wet and dry) but it didn't help.)

Hi Badmunkee.Animal digest is just that food that has been digested in the animal.I believe it may be swine but don't quote me on it.Could be found in the cow's stomach's also.Forti flora is animal digest & is used highly for diarrhea.I see it being used on the IBD group making liquid into logs. Some people do have a problem with it being digest. It is apparently the  only probiotic that actually has been tested on cats  as per an Internist on another group I belong to.Many get gut bacteria haywire he said.Any probiotic used has to have time to work.Nothing is right now. We're talking weeks. You can google forti flora if you like. It's there.Diarrhea can be deceiving to owners.Cat's will push so hard the liquid stool will get by the hard stuff giving you the impression your cat has diarrhea when in fact it does not.My probiotic for Maxwell for 6 yrs every day was 1/8 tsp 2x per day of canned pumpkin.Never another enema.never rocks, never diarrhea.HTH C. Hugs to the babe.Cats hate having diarrhea & the stress level isn't helping. Why did they give your kitty buprinex(buprenorphine) ? Is your cat in pain?Bup is used for severe pain & slows gut motility down.it actually can cause constipation.Did they explain that bup. is not syringed down the throat but actually placed just inside the mouth next to cheek 7 syringed there? it is designed to be absorbed in the mucous of the mouth not syringed down the throat. And can cause a lot of hallucinations etc depending on your dose.handle well by cats for actual pain.Do they think your kitty is having a pancreatic flareup? if so that is a whole other can of worms.metro isusally dosed as well as bup for pain but stress being a key trigger.pancreatitis in cats is very painful.i have a group you can join if you like. But you need  a diagnosi.there is a test done for pancreatitis.fpl1 also and US to see if the pancreas in inlamed.if you  are having an US becaue of the cost down't stop there.Your kitty is not put under.Get them to look all over the place & it should not be done by a veterinarian but a certified sonographer.they should look at the liver ,kidneys etc while observing. Here is why to use a sonographer over a vet that purchase an US machine:

Subject: ultrasonographer and why to have one

If your pet ever needs an ultrasound exam, it's crucial to ensure that it's done properly. An inadequate ultrasound can be worse than none at all, since it often leads to misdiagnosis, which can be very dangerous for your pet.The use of ultrasound in veterinary medicine has become very common but there are no regulations in place to ensure that your pet’s ultrasound is performed competently.

Ultrasound isn't magic; it takes training, skill, and experience for the operator to accurately locate and examine the various abdominal organs and tissues and to correctly interpret any abnormalities. Without adequate mastery, it can be very easy to misinterpret an ultrasound image—to mistake gas bubbles in the colon for bladder stones, to miss subtly enlarged abdominal lymph nodes, to overlook a localized intestinal thickening. Some organs can be very tricky to locate if the operator lacks proficiency; it is common for inexperienced individuals to miss the adrenal glands or pancreas, for example.

If your pet requires an ultrasound exam, it falls to you to ensure that the person performing the procedure has adequate training to do so effectively, since there are no standards currently in place in the veterinary profession. Anyone can buy an ultrasound machine and start using it on people’s pets, and the results of mistakes can be tragic.

The best way to protect your pet is to have the ultrasound exam done by a board-certified veterinary radiologist if possible . Radiologists undergo a lengthy residency program, during which they receive rigorous training in the performance of various types of ultrasound procedures. To become board-certified, they must pass an arduous certification exam. If there is a veterinary radiologist in your area, this is the best person to perform your pet’s ultrasound procedure. To locate a radiologist, you can go to the veterinary radiology website and search for a board-certified radiologist in your city or state.

If you can’t find a veterinary radiologist in your area, a veterinary internal medicine specialist is another good choice. Veterinary internists also receive ultrasound training during their residency programs, although their ultrasound training is not as extensive as that of a radiologist. Internists are also skilled at the interpretation of abdominal ultrasound results, since the abdominal organs are one of the areas in which they specialize. To find an internist in your area, you can check theinternal medicine website .

An ultrasound exam of the heart (echocardiogram), for example for a pet with a heart murmur, should be performed by a board-certified veterinary cardiologist; you can find one in your area here.

One method to avoid for your pet is the “remote ultrasound”. In this situation, instead of having a specialist perform a full ultrasound exam, someone takes pictures using an ultrasound machine, and sends them to a radiologist for interpretation.Unfortunately many mistakes can occur with this method. If an abnormality is not recognized by the untrained person performing the exam, or the images are of poor quality, the radiologist cannot make an accurate assessment of the animal. This technique should be a last resort, for geographic areas where there is no radiologist or internist available.Owners should be given the choice of seeing a radiologist or internist and made aware that this option exists.  HTC C.

Try stopping dry for 3-5 days. I really bet there is an ingredient he's sensitive to. I know as a human with food allergies, even the tiniest little ingredient in something can make me sick. I'm sure it's similar for cats. You can reintroduce the dry later if you'd like, if he starts having issues again, then it's definitely the dry. Check the ingredients and try to narrow down what the allergy *might be* then try dry foods without those ingredients.

Totally try pumpkin though. Just the 100% Pumpkin can, not pumpkin pie mix. It's cheap and it can't hurt to try.

The problem with dry food is that often times it has a lot of protein sources, so if your cat is intolerant to a protein source, you can't pin point it.  That's why I'm currently only doing turkey raw/turkey canned, just a single source of protein to deal with.  After a couple of weeks I'm planning on trying turkey raw/chicken canned to see how he reacts.  This is still a continuing process for me too.  I'm surprised your cat had a bad reaction to rabbit since cats become intolerant to certain foods after they have been fed it for so long, and most cats aren't spoiled with rabbit all the time. Your cat might be like my kitty and dislike the processed food.  Canned food is processed but it's not as processed as dry food.  This vet lady (http://www.catinfo.org) says it's no problem to leave canned food out for up to 12 hours.  Cats have shorter intestines and it's more acidic so they don't easily succumb to food poisoning.  Why don't you try leaving out an open can of canned food and not dry food?  But it is ideal to feed him twice a day..so he doesn't have continuous diarrhea all day.  Try upping the raw percentage of a cat's diet.  Like I mentioned, when I was doing 50/50 between raw and canned food my cat was going back to soft stools.  Nutro chicken and Nutro turkey are good canned foods because it's grain free and doesn't have carageenan and it only contains one source of protein.

Thanks!
I'll just cut out the dry food and feed only raw/wet for about a week with probiotics and pumpkin.
The rabbit didn't cause problems - more like it didn't solve anything (and my cats weren't fans at all.)

Thanks everybody for the awesome suggestions. I'm less worried now
And I think he just made a small but almost-normal-looking poop. Fingers crossed it's a sign he's turned a corner

To Mom of Maxwell: The pain reliever was because he was in major pain when trying to poo... I only gave it to him for like a day. I know it's intense stuff -- my dear departed old tortie girl had pancreatitis toward end of life and that's what I had to give her. Ultrasound is to make sure he isn't develpong colitis. I want to have that done but I think I might take him to a holistic vet to see about trying some food and natural treatments since all the meds my vet give don't seem to make much difference
