We rescued a 4 week old abandoned kitten yesterday. It's feral mother gave birth in our shed and unfortunately was hit by a car yesterday morning. I immediately made an appointment with our vet, and bought bottles, kitten milk replacer, and kitten food. We took her to the vet and she weighed 13 oz. as of yesterday. Her teeth are coming in, and the vet gave her a checkup and dewormer. The vet seemed to think she was in good condition other than having a bloated belly. The kitten will not take to the bottle, will not eat or drink anything, and I'm afraid she will become dehydrated. She hasn't eliminated other than her peeing on the floor once. I've tried rubbing her anal area with a warm washcloth, and nothing has worked. I've tried force feeding her with a syringe and I've gotten a few mL of kitten formula down, but nowhere near what she should be getting. I've made a warm gruel, and have even tried incorporating chicken Gerber baby food. She just turns her nose up at it. All she seems to want to do is sleep. Should I be concerned?

She has lost the only mother she ever knew and she is mourning and probably still waiting for mom to return.  She has not yet gotten hungry enough to want anything other than her own mother's milk and since she was raised feral and has not yet learned what human love is, it will take a little time.  She is not a newborn so she doesn't have to eat every few hours, so let her go about 4 hours between feeding attempts during the day and let her go 6 to 8 hours at night.  She will get hungry and be easier to feed.  Also, she may learn to like a bottle at 4 weeks, but she's nearly old enough to start weaning.  If she resists a bottle, just continue to feed her with the syringe and put a little formula in a saucer or something small enough she can lick it on her own when she is ready -  Also, as much as I dislike the taste of Goat's milk, it is very good for kittens and you can usually find it in the dairy section of most supermarkets if you are in the U.S.  You might try that and see if she likes it.  As long as you are very careful feedng her and make sure she doesn't inhale any formula, she should be just fine.  The more you handle her and pet her and love on her, a little bit at a time, as much as she can tolerate, the faster she will domesticate.  She needs to get used to human smells.  Be sure to wash your hands so you don't have a bunch of extra smells on you when you pick her up.  Stay in touch because there are LOTS of experienced foster moms on here who have succesfully raised hundreds of kittens and they all have lots of ideas.  You might do a search above for "raising orphan kittens" and read some other threads.  there is lots of wonderful information here.  and THANK YOU for taking care of the poor little orphaned kitten!

Wonderful advice! Best of luck! You are the mom now. She should come around soon. And the Gerber and bottle may work in a couple of days when she gets hungry enough and/or desperately wants to suckle. Kitten is bewildered right now but your efforts should win her over with patience. Put a little kitty litter pan nearby too, and put her in it and show her how to "dig". And try to snuggle and play just a bit. Hope she comes around for you soon. Bless you & this baby!

And maybe a stuffed teddy or such in her little bed to cuddle with. Can't hurt. She's missing mommy and litter mates, but she should soon accept you.

Thank y'all so much for the advice!!! She does play a little, and is exploring my living room as I type. She has a few beanie babies stuffed animals in her bed that she's been wrestling and chewing on. I'm just so relieved this is normal behavior. I've been worried sick!

Awww. Everything will be okay. Bless her little heart. So sweet! It's all normal. You just have a little baby trying to figure out life without mommy or litter mates. Keep up the good work, you awesome soul!

sarthur is right!  Baby misses mama. When I had a little baby kitten that age, I would just bring her in my bed and  snuggle!  One used to snuggle on the side of my neck, semi suckle ( which was fine at a few weeks old, not so much when she got bigger!) That cat and I were very close. Also she knew my scent, and cats are very scent orientated. Don't be afraid to snuggle, you will have a very devoted little cat! They are so cute at that age - trying to walk and run and pounce at things. I could watch for hours!  Oh I am so wanting a little baby again...enjoy, they grow so fast!
