Hello Everyone!

About 5 weeks ago, we took in 2 cats for an acquaintance of a friend who was in the middle of moving and weren't able to care for them.  Both cats are super friendly and cuddly.  It was an unexpected thing, we didn't really have the money to, but the guy was going to drop the cats outside somewhere in -10 weather and we figured it was better if we took them, started taking care of them and then get the vet situation settled. We got the boy caught up on his vaccinations and had him neutered immediately as unfixed animals really aren't our thing, and were planning on taking the girl in a little later just to get all checked out.  We were told that the female was up to date on all her vaccinations and had been spayed and that she had never been pregnant, so weren't too concerned about her.  They were both underweight and had not been taken care of very well.  We put them on Eukaneuba, and they both started to eat and gain weight (they had been fighting over food, and are just now realizing that there will always be food, so there is no need to fight over it),  At first I thought she was gaining weight because she is eating both an appropriate amount as well as better food, but about 2 weeks ago she started looking huge. Well, they lied, as she's pregnant. Very very pregnant, she looks like she literally swallowed a softball.  We have no idea when she would have mated, and it's difficult to go by when she started showing as she was quite underweight.

Up until the past couple of days, she had been fine with our 12 year old German Shepard/Lab mix.  She didn't exactly love him, but she was tolerant (the boy cat will covertly cuddle with the dog when he thinks we aren't looking :) ). Our dog has been around cats all his life, and for the most part ignores them.  She has been getting progressively more aggressive towards him over the past few days, to the point that she ran at him from the kitchen and I had to pull her off of him this morning (it was completely unprovoked, as he was laying at my feet in the living room, sleeping).

I've had cats all my life, so am pretty well versed in normal cat behavior, but I did do quite a bit of research about pregnant cats as I've never been around them and didn't know what to expect.  I have seen many mentions of cats becoming aggressive after birthing, but not much prior to birth.  Is it possible that she is nearing labor, could that explain her behavior change?

I've set up a birthing box with lots of towels, and sprayed it down with catnip for good measure in her favorite hiding spot, the bottom shelf of our towel storage in the bathroom, and she has started laying in there. Currently, she and the boy cat are playing and chasing each other around the house, so it's not a *complete* change of behavior, it's just aggression towards the dog.  I'm not sure what to do, we have not been rewarding aggressive behavior by trying to calm her down with petting and soothing voices, etc.  We HAVE been trying to startle her to redirect her attention or use a spray bottle, which has been effective, up until the past couple of days. We haven't been physically touching her when she's mean towards the dog, except for this morning to pull her off. Putting her in another room isn't working, as she is a master escape artist  (I seriously have no idea how she gets out of the bathroom!!).  Any and all recommendations or advice would be much appreciated.  Thank you so much in advance!

Sounds like her maternal instincts are kicking in, that why she attacking the dog but it could also be because she wasn't proper introduce to the dog

I would put her in a room and lock the door here she won't be brother by the dog or the other cat
Can you feel the kittens or see movemenr?, is she being affectionate? Is she nesting? Can you take a photo of her belly?

Please don't spray her as it might make things worse, also please read this http://www.thecatsite.com/a/cats-and-discipline-dont-mix

I too think its her maternal agressivity sparking in.

Some isolation is usually the solution, but she being the follower of Houdini...

Btw,    Dont overdo this with cat nip!    A little may be good, but too much may play havoc with her humour and hormones added...

Try with a Feliway diffuser, to feel her more calm and at ease.

Did you noticed when her nipples changes color into pink and rosy?

And or when you had began to feel the kittens move?

Im sending our usual links, re the high preg and birthing situation.

Good luck!

Most of these links have been readied by our forumist  Red Top Rescue:

Oh dear, I didn't realize that about spray bottles. I have used one for years based on my vet's recommendation. I'll definitely stop, as I don't want to stress her out. The few times I used it, she came up to me immediately after and rubbed her head on me and cuddled, so hopefully no harm has been done!

Unfortunately, I can't keep the dog in another room, he is having blood sugar issues right now, and I need to keep an eye on him as problems develop rapidly (I stay at home).

I'm going to take a look at all the links, thank you so much for posting them!

It alright, some of us had done it before we learnt that it wasn't good for them. Sounds like she forgives easy

Could you set up a baby gate to a room where she can get into bur the dog can't, i would also put the nesting box in there

Oh and to answer the other questions, both cats were kept away from the dog when we first got them to allow them to get used to the smells and sounds of our household. After a few days, they were sticking their paws out from under the door, so we allowed them to come out and explore while supervised. The dog has never chased them, at most he'll lift his head as they walk by. There weren't any issues prior to the past couple of days, so I'm fairly sure it's not a case of improper introduction.

I can see her abdomen twitching, and have for about 1.5 weeks I'd say, but she doesn't like to have her belly touched, so I haven't felt the kittens move. She is also a long hair, so her nipples aren't really visible. I didn't have any reason to suspect she was pregnant prior to the weight gain, so I'm not certain when they started to pink up :/

She isn't nesting, but I would say that she has definitely become more affectionate. She'll climb onto my lap and headbutt me if I stop petting her.

As far as catnip goes, I don't use too much of it. Just a spray on the scratching post and toys once a week or so. It does seem to really calm her down though, so I'll have to look into Feliway.

I'm away from the house right now, but I'll try and get a good pic of her belly when I get home and post it!

OK, so it is at most a week, perhaps even just a few days. Not longer but perhaps shorter.  The last day or two before the delivery they usually drop. She suddenly seems to be somewhat smaller.  And the kittens are in the birthing postitions, so they arent as movable...

Good luck!

Thank you StefanZ! It's funny you mention that, when I got home she seemed WAY smaller. To the point I searched around the house to make sure she hadn't delivered! As promised, here are a couple pictures. She's fairly restless right now, so it was hard to get any good ones. I'm thinking it's going to be sooner rather than later!

Yeah she definitely going in couple of days to a week

Do you have milk replacer? It a good idea to have some on hand in case she don't produce milk or enough. Our experts(StefanZ is one of them) recommends KMR by PetAg or goat milk, raw goat milk is besr

I don't have any on hand, but I'll have my fiance pick some up.  He's the manager at a pet/feed store, so I'm sure they have lots of options.  I'll pass those recommendations on to him.  Thanks so much!!

Also weighing them with a food scale in grams everyday is a good idea to make sure they are growing at a good rate.

We don't have kittens yet, but she's started nesting, has been laying down a lot and is really affectionate and has chilled out towards the dog (rubbing her head on him as she walks by). I think we're close!
