Hello, I’m writing you from Vancouver, BC Canada and I am desperate to find a no-kill shelter In the Los Angeles area who will take in two orangie girls who are 11 years young and bonded.

Attached:

The story:

My best friend, Gini, who lived in L.A. passed away November 23, 3013 and left behind Annie and Emma.  Gini took them in as feral strays when they were kittens and they bonded closely with Gini.  Gini’s brother now lives in the house and hates the cats, says he’s allergic and wants them gone asap which breaks my heart.  Gini’s other family members in Boston, Mass. don’t want them either.  My other friend lives about an hour away from Gini but due to her circumstances, can’t take them in.  We are both animal advocates and spread the word about adoption and spay/neuter programs.

Through my past visits to Gini in LA, I have had the pleasure of sleeping with them and getting to know their purr and personalities.  They are bonded, although you could say that Annie is certainly “alpha” and has retained a bit of her feral background.  That being said, I have had the honour of petting her soft tummy.  Emma is the most affectionate of the two.  Both will take some time to adjust to a new home.

In a purrfect world, here is what I’m hoping for.  I hoping that a volunteer from a caring shelter will make a home visit to assess the kitties and perhaps take them back to the shelter or better yet, a quiet, adult foster home with no other pets.  Eventually, I’m hoping that “said” shelter will find the purrfect home for them and retain the adoption fee, of course.

In honour of my best friend I am willing to make a sizable donation in order to make this happen.  As it is now, they are being fed and litter scooped, but that’s about it.  They’ve lost the only human that they’ve loved and now they will have to be uprooted – you can only imagine how scared or depressed they must be.  If I could, I would love to have them both come up to Canada, but I’m afraid the red tape will be too lengthy to cut through and Gini’s brothers are putting pressure on us to find a solution as soon as possible.

If any of you in the LA area can at least set me on the right path - perhaps give me some names of shelters, or internet links, that's a start.  I'm on facebook as Slick Heys and have already emailed two shelters as well as Jackson Galaxy.  Any response is truly appreciated.

Thank you for listening.

Vickie A Heys

Victoria--

Having taken in four senior kitties this year after a friend passed, I understand the situation. I'm so sorry about your friend.  And poor kitties!  I am in central CA, north of L.A. by several hours, but will check in with my animal friends to see if they know of any resources south of us.

Have you contacted any shelters in the area? If so, it would be helpful if you post a list here so we aren't duplicating efforts.

ETA: Oops, I just reread your first post and see that you did contact 2 shelters. Which ones were they?

Another question. Are your friend's brothers willing to transport the cats or do they expect the shelter/foster to pick them up?

Thank you all for your responses and suggestions.

The brother living in the house wants nothing to do with the cats.  He's not willing to transport at all.  He is expecting someone to come and pick them up (makes me angry) but if the shelter must do this then I can pay for transport.  The other brother and his family live in Boston, MA so he's no help.  He doesn't like them either.  :(

The two shelters I've already email are Carson Cats and Save-a-life.org.  I found them on this site:

http://www.nokillnetwork.org/d/California

My friend's house is in Central LA and I know that she is close to Wilshire Blvd and only minutes away from Santa Monica Blvd..

I'm in Arizona, not close enough to L.A. to be familiar with the local rescues. I do know someone who has fostered for the Guardian Angels Animal Rescue in San Diego. She's mentioned that they frequently pull cats from high-kill shelters. I have no what geographical area they cover or if they'd be willing to go as far as L.A., but it can't hurt to ask. They may know of a similar organization closer to L.A.

Hi Vickie--no real good news.  As (bad) luck would have it, we are in the midst of a big forest fire just down the coast and the SPCA and other rescue groups are busy trying to evacuate pets.  It's kind of crazy here on the peninsula.  But one rescue place did respond:

You might want to go through the list of Los Angeles Shelters and Rescue Groups on Petfinder and contact them to see if one can help:

http://www.petfinder.com/animal-shelters-and-rescues/search/?location=Los+Angeles,+CA&shelter_name=

It's a list of shelters in the L.A. area.  Unfortunately there's no specific help but maybe there are some places on the list you haven't tried yet.

If I think of anything else, I'll post...   please do keep us posted!

Thank you so much everyone.  I have bookmarked that link and tomorrow will start making phone calls.

A friend suggested tonight that they would probably do well an a quiet home with a senior so I'm hoping I can find a lead to a shelter that perhaps offers a "seniors for seniors" program.

For night I need to try and get a good nights sleep.  This whole ordeal is tearing me apart.

I know of a cat transport system; they are on Facebook.  They say the handle transports all over, so I assume they must have contacts in California also.  Here is their Facebook page link:

https://www.facebook.com/CuteTransportNetwork?hc_location=timeline

I have a friend who is involved with them, but she only does the driving in Florida.

If you need someone to take the kitties from one place to another, perhaps they can help, and if not, guide you to someone locally who can.

Good luck, they are adorable and deserve to stay together.

Well I heard back from Save-a-life.org and will accept Annie and Emma but for a fee of $500 each.  I'm afraid $1000 USD is a bit too rich for my blood.  I need to contact one of the brothers to see if there was any provision made in her Will for them.  That could be used and maybe through her friends at the Wilshire Rotary we can start some kind of a fundraising project.  I'm just thinking out loud here.  Don't know if this is feasible.   I've already had two rejection emails so far.

Just got an email from one ****** brother who said that they will be put to sleep unless I can find a home for them by New Years.  Words can't describe my sorrow.

Just an idea, but could you get photos printed and a short paragraph explaining the situation and get them placed in shops near to where your friend lived? Then maybe someone would be interested in adopting them.

I'm so sorry--it's hard to believe those guys would be so callous as to suggest euthanizing those kitties, especially knowing what they meant to their sister.

Please let us know what you come up with for fundraisers.  I know time is short but there's always this: http://www.gofundme.com

Vickie. :hugs: I am so very sorry about the loss of your dear friend. It is incredibly loving and kind of you to be so worried about Annie and Emma, and rightly so. How awful and unloving of your friend's brother to be so cold hearted towards the two kitties his sister loved so dearly and saved all those years ago. Shame, shame on him. :sniffle: And, my heart just breaks for those two kitties and what they are dealing with now upon suddenly losing their momma and now this "man" who hates them moves in. :( Poor little ones but they are very, very lucky to have you in their corner fighting for a new life for them.

Yes, checking in her will is a great idea and I hope that the brothers would be honest about the reading of the will. I know many people who have their pets in their will. I assume you have contacted all family members, friends, relatives you can think of. The other option, other than the great suggestions above, is one I have used with success is to print up a flyer about these two girls and their dilemma and post it at all local veterinarians. You can do all this via email to the vets. Most will be very willing to post. It will just take some time making those calls. Someone loving and good hearted will see that flyer and is bound to open up their heart/home to them. :cross: I am sending loads and loads of vibes for a good outcome for these two beauties. Bless your heart for what you are doing. :heart3: :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

Great Mews!!!!!

I'm on another forum called petoftheday.com/talk and we have now found a home for them in San Jose.  Well, it's more of a foster home with someone who is very experienced in rescues and is affiliated with 3 shelters in her area.  She also owns a feed store so Annie and Emma will go to live in the feed store which will give them the exposure they need to get adopted.  This kind person is known to us and with her help I'm sure Annie and Emma will have their furrever home waiting around the corner.  Thanks to two others on that forum, we also have transport covered.  Only thing left to do is to arrange with one of the bros to get into the house to collect them.

I would like to take this opportunity to purrsonally thank each of you for your replies and suggestions and support.  As you can guess, this has been quite a struggle with the 4 of us who have been the closest to Gini.  I'm sure Gini is smiling down on us now, cheering us on.

Merry Christmas and Happy Mew Year to you all and please, go and hug your kitty now.  They need you as much as you need them.

Oh Vickie, I am so happy and relieved to hear this news!
Annie and Emma will be safe and cared for.  I was thinking about you and the kitties this morning and was going to write to see how things were going, but I was almost afraid to know!  I know you must be so relieved.  Gini was lucky to have such a good, caring friend to take care of her babies.

Merry Christmas to you, too.

Our only hurdle now is to get these two beauties transported from Simi Vally, CA to Bakersfield, CA on Sunday, Dec 29th.  We already have someone to transport them from L.A. to Simi Valley.  The Foster Mom will be meeting the driver in Bakersfield and transporting them up to Campbell, CA.

Any suggestions?

I've checked out the FB page for Cute Transport Network and posted it there but if anyone else knows another group, I'd appreciate knowing about it.

Many thanks again.  [emoji]9829[/emoji]

Those kitties are lucky to have you on their side!
I will check with a couple animal rescue people I know here in Monterey and see if anyone has any suggestions.

Hi Vickie! :) Checking in on you, Emma and Annie and I could not be happier to read the update on their new adventure and life. I assume they made it there safely on the 29th? :cross: You have done a wonderful thing for your dear friend's kitties. It is so very heartwarming to know there are people such as yourself in this world. :heart3: Keep us posted and Happy New Year. A new year and a new life for Annie and Emma in the hopes of them finding their forever home. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:
