So…..last night was Saturday night of a three day weekend and I figured I could stay up late and then just sleep in today, right? I watched movies, did some online holiday shopping, enjoyed the late evening to myself and got to bed after midnight. Well…..at 5:30 this morning, I was RUDELY awakened by Jake in the cat room (right next to the bedroom) yowling his head off like he hadn’t eaten in a week. I tried unsuccessfully tried to ignore him, so I decided to bring him and Hannah in bed with me, thinking I could get them to snuggle and BE QUIET so I could sleep a bit longer. I got up, checked under the bed to make sure none of our resident cats were there (Hannah and Jake fight with our other cats so we keep them separated) and let Hannah and Jake in.
But they wanted attention so they had to get a few minutes of head and tummy scritches first. Then they calmed down and I thought I could sleep. But no--Molly, another of the newbies, heard us rustling around and decided she wanted in the bedroom to get in on the snuggle-fest. So I got up and let her in. Five minutes passed and then of course Travis, the last of the newbies, decided he didn’t want to be left out. His “meowing” cannot be ignored—we have decided he sounds like he’s trying to meow while gargling a mouth full of marbles, it’s the most annoying sound on the planet—and I had to get up and let him in, too.
I had all four of them in the bedroom and everybody settled down—for about another five minutes. I had the door between the cat room and the bedroom open, so Travis went in the cat room, took a big old dump and per usual, didn't cover it. Are you kidding me, cat?! I buried my head under the covers, but there is no escaping that smell.
I got up again, covered his poop, and went back to bed. By then, Jake decided he was seriously DYING of starvation and started yowling again. Sigh. Okay, forget it, no sleeping in for me this morning.
I got up, fed and gave meds to all four of them, swept out their room, cleaned litter boxes, changed water, cleaned Jake’s ears and Molly’s eyes and got them shut back in their room. I went into the bathroom to finally take care of myself and discovered that Travis had peed on the floor during the night (he’s old and does that occasionally…) That meant cleaning out the litter box in there, washing the rug, mopping the floor. As I went out to the kitchen to get the cleaning supplies for that job, I saw Rico and Ozzy, two of our indoor/outdoor cats, chasing a mouse under the credenza in the dining room!
Two hours later--the morning ablutions of all seven cats were handled, Rico had caught his man (mouse) and I got the carcass outside.
Now every last one of the little turkeys is snoozing away in their favorite spots, and I’m facing the day on five hours of sleep.
Oh well—what are you gonna do. Cats will be cats--I had to laugh at the whole thing! As for me, I’m going to get in a little treadmill time and then head over to a friend’s for a well-deserved mimosa and brunch!
Happy Sunday, all.
