I was sweeping the floor in the utility room and saw all this green stuff on the floor, motor oil or something. Hubby was able to raise washer enough to see it is leaking around the underneath. When I take a paper towel and wipe around every edge, it is green with the junk. I got out the paper work and we bought it in April 1991, Of course, it is a Maytag. So I am thinking it doesn't owe us a thing and I am going to unload it somewhere and just get a new one. I looked online at the website of our local Home store. They have a set of Maytag washer and dryer for $799, or the washer can be purchased for $399 which is $200 off the regular price. If you buy the set, they will give you a $50 gift card. So now I am trying to decide if I am going to get them both. My dryer is seven years old and it is an Amana. I have never liked it as it takes forever to dry the clothes. Decisions, decisions. I thought it was going to be a peaceful stay at home Saturday, but it is going to be a trip to the Home Store at least. After mopping up all that grease off the floor, I am not turning that baby on again. :lol3:

I hate it when a major appliance dies like that, but new ones are usually a lot more energy efficient, and your washer had a long service life.

You could probably sell the dryer or donate it to a shelter; our local one is always pleased to get used appliances.

If you can afford it comfortably, I'd get both. They'll match as a set and have the same "starting life." The dryers nowadays are ridiculously efficient. Mine is a high-efficiency and it'll completely dry a huge load in no time at all.

Sorry about all the grease.

jcat's idea is a good one. You could try selling or donating the dryer.

You're talking 20 years; that's pretty good. I'd just go ahead and get both at this point. If your dryer is that old, too, it's just a matter of time. That's a good buy for the set.

Our washer is a Maytag, too, and it's been going strong. We lost the belt on it twice, but that's been it, so we can't complain and I think we're pushing about 20 years, too.

Have fun shopping!

I agree with the others that said if you can afford it, get the dryer too.

We did go ahead and get the dryer and washer. They are the basic High Energy model made by Maytag. This has the knobs, not all that digital stuff. I think with this, there is less chance of something tearing up. My dryer is Amana made by Whirlpool, 6 and a half years old. I never liked it from day one. It has too much of that digital stuff. So I decided to ditch it. Maybe I can sell it on Craig's list for a few dollars. Anyway, we did have to buy the cord for the dryer and some hoses for the washer. That is the only way they would do the free hookup. I really don't want my hubby having to do too much moving that heavy stuff. They will deliver on Tuesday afternoon.

Good idea to buy the 2 together.

So far as delivery goes, I always make my purchase conditional on the delivery.  I want delivery when it's convenient for me, not when they feel like delivering.

My first bed was delivered that same afternoon, and the second bed was delivered the next day.  The first one was mostly just luck and the fact that the sales guy felt for me because I had drained my waterbed and was going to have to sleep on the loveseat until my bed was delivered. He made it happen that afternoon.

The second one was more of a push on my part.  They weren't going to deliver for almost a week. I told him that I wanted it delivered the next day, a Saturday. He said they couldn't do it. I simply said I'll go to The Brick; they told me that they can deliver. Crazy how fast he was able to arrange not only delivery the next day, but at no cost to me!

I'm so glad you were able to get the set! Doing laundry will be a lot of more fun for you. (Well, by that I mean because you have a new washer and dryer to play with.) Enjoy!

They told me I have thirty days to try them out. They will take them back and give me the same amount credit on two new ones if I don't like them. So that is not an issue. As for delivery, we live 45 minutes out of town, so they couldn't do it today. I don't think they deliver on Sunday and I wouldn't want them to anyhow. We do Sunday School and Church, maybe eat out before we come home. Then we spend Siunday evening relaxing. I think Monday might be a holiday. So Tuesday after lunch is fine with me. I don't have children to do laundry for and me and hubby can make out. I am excited. I am past sixty years old and have never had a matching set. So I am excited about that. My first washer was a wringer, that the wringer didn't work. It had been my grandmother's. But the tub and agitator worked. I had it in the bathroom. Had to fill the tub myself then put the drain hose in the bathtub to drain it. I wrung out the clothes by hand. At any rate, it sure beat having to wash the clothes out in the bathtub. I had a baby and lots of cloth baby diapers. :lol3: Before Dad brought home the wringer washer for Grandma, I remember the fire in the yard, and the black wash pot that she used to wash the clothes. Does anyone know what a washboard is. I saw her scrub the clothes on that thing until her hands were cold and red in the winter and sometimes bled. So she thought that wringer was the best thing she ever owned when she finally got it and I did too.:wavey:

That's good that you were able to get the set. My dryer broke last weekend and I picked up a cheap used one today for $30. It's the same brand (Roper) but is the higher end model than my old one which we paid $70 for.

Just a word of advice from money experts, such as Dave Ramsey.  Never pay for anything you can't carry out of the store with a check or cash (or a debit card, either).  Pay with a a credit card.  That way, if some major problem develops, such as a delivery disaster or something, you have the leverage of the credit card company in getting the problem resolved.

That is a good idea! I tend to pay cash or debit for stuff, but for big purchases I am going to adopt that policy.

Nice set! You're going to love your new washer and dryer. I've never had a matched set either.

Grandma had an old wringer washer on the back porch of her house and I remember helping her put clothing through those wringers. Every Monday morning, we did the laundry and it wasn't easy. I've seen washboards, but fortunately have never had to use one.

Even though I had set aside cash for our refrigerator, we are planning on opening a card account with HH Gregg and putting the fridge on the card. We will pay the card off because I don't want to have any interest on the account, but we figured that was the best way to do it. Plus, we get an extra 5% off the price by putting it on the card. Something I thought was interesting was that HH Gregg (well, at least the store we were in) does not accept checks. They will take either a credit or a debit card or cash. But no checks. They said they had had too much trouble with check fraud that it wasn't worth it to accept checks anymore.

I have used Fab liquid for years and I love it. But I was told first by my nephew and then by the store salesman that these new high efficiency washers take a special type of laundry soap. I looked on the front of my Fab bottle and it does have the he emblem. So I am estatic to know I don't have to change detergents.

Both are installed now in my laundry room. I am washing clothes. It is definitely different. The lid locks and I hear some clicking sounds. As I said, there is no agitator. I used the quick start guide for directions until I have time to read the manual. So far, I like.

Ooo good!  I hope you love it!  Laundry is more fun that first few times!  More so if you've gone without a machine I'm sure; but still!
I'm curious how you like it without an agitator.  Update us on it later please!  Gotta keep that all in mind for down the road for myself!
