Hi,

My owner, or you might call him/her in English, wants to bring me (my name is Elsa Gloria but you can call me "Little Batman") with him to Another country by airoplane. What must he do to make it possible? Get me shots at the vet? (I hate that, it hurts). Document? It's within the EU in Europe.

Please advice.

Best mjau from, Elsa Gloria

Your vet can give you the proper info, depending on your destination (the UK and Scandinavia have stricter regulations). Pets must be microchipped, inoculated and have an EU pet passport issued by a vet.

Also know in advance that cats react differently to drugs:  what may cause sleepyness in one cat may make a different cat very active.

Hi, I'm Peter. Can I ask the vet to ordinate some drug to give to the cat, that she stay calm (= more or less sleeping) for and during the flight - let say 3 hours? If the answer is yes, can you advice a medicine to use, buy?

/Peter

You should discuss this with your vet; he/she may know how your cat reacts to different drugs, situations.  Altitude can affect effects of drugs.  Also, check with the airline to see what they require.  What is legal/required in the US is different from EU.

This is a good thread  about flying with cats.

1. Call the airline your flying on (I recommend Lufthansa air as they will allow the pet to be in the cabin with the passenger) http://www.lufthansa.com/de/en/Animals

Ask for policies.

2. Call your departure airport, and ask for pet policies..

3. Call you arrival airport, and ask for pet policies.

IF you're going to stop in an a transit, call that airport and ask for their pet policies.

Write all the information down or if you can find them online print them and organize them. (Please official websites only not some random or out dated information or false ones)

Make a copy of all the documents you have prepared because some are taken by them.  Make at least 5 copies of each, also the vaccination book, make copies of it too.

Some of the information that I think you will need:

Import pet permit.

Export pet permit.

Vet health certificate of the pet.

Up to date vaccinations (I think most countries will not allow cats or pets with rabies vaccinations that are less than 30 days- meaning you must wait at least 30 days after rabies vaccination before traveling)

Microchip

Also, they're are specific requirements for both in-cabin flying or via cargo regarding the pet carrier. Make sure you ask.

Make sure to talk to your vet and see what are the options to calm your pet during the flight. ( I have a stressed cat and he traveled in-cabin with me and the vet gave us something I can't remember what was it but it DOESN'T make the cat asleep, NO it makes him calm and relaxes his muscles, he is wide awake and knows what's happening around him but the pill made him somewhat dizzy and not active)

Also cats have small noses so be aware of that for breathing issues.

Take note that some or all the documents have a time limit and they will expire.  Organize everything in advance.

Talk with your vet about how is your pet traveling in-cabin or cargo regarding food and water.

Put all the documents in a zip file so nothing falls or you lose any document.

I had a 1:30 hour flight (short yes) but calculate the way to the airport and check-in ...etc. it added up to 6 hours for me along with arrival and all.

My pet had to fast so 12 hours before departure I stopped giving him food and water. Before I left the house I gave him the pill so he can relax and gave him about a tablespoon of dry food with the pill. (I didn't want to give him the pill on an empty stomach)

I bought a soft carrier because he was in the cabin with me with the required dimensions from the airlines. make sure they're are enough opening the carrier for air.  Also make sure it has a secure lock so your pet wont escape. Mine came with it, and before locking my cat was able to unzip the bag!

He's the carrier I bought: http://sturdiproducts.com/products/sturdibag-large

Everything went smooth and safe. Just prepare and organize at least 3 weeks before departure date.

Have a safe trip.

Hello,

I thank you for the accurate information about travelling with a cat. I will save it for the future.

Unfortunately my cat Elsa Gloria is ill now. I have no Insurance either. The mother is a Burmese and the father is a 75% Burmese (I hope it's true. Because there are no blck Burmese as far as I know. There are only Bombay breeds that are black.).

Anyway, one day  a week ago the Health changed completely for EG. Her way to see with her Eyes looks so different now. It seam that she cannot open the Eyes as usual (only about 75% open), and that there is like a lamina that covers the yellow Eye. And she look tired in her face. She is also turning around, Rolling, on the floor. And she wants to get out and mjau, mjau so much. I have been out with her a lot Walking with a leash. and she has been so healty and sometimes climbing a tree and waling in high grass too. Perhaps she has Worms? I gave her a dosage of medicin against Worms two Days ago. We will see.

I must call the vet.

/Peder with poor EG

I'm sorry to hear poor Elsa Gloria is ill, and it does sound like she needs a vet as soon as possible. Lots of :vibes::vibes::vibes: for a quick recovery.

Hi Lcat,

Now I know that ElsaGloria was not ill. She had one of her periods. She had one in August - and right now she has again one too. She is mjauing all the time and she is Rolling around on the floor and Rolling around my feets. I hope it's over soon.

Now that I know that almost all breeders doesn't want me to have a male Burma or Bombay to have kittens once. So now I look for Another moggie black cat. And like I mentioned Before. I want eg to have kittens once, and then I let her be spayed and the other cat to be neutrined (or how to spell the Word?). Then these two black cats can live together the´rest of their cat lives in my home.

Best regards, Peter the Cat Butler.

Hello Jcat,

My owner/butler has bought a new cat. He is crazy. It is a black cat, bigger than I am. He is nice but a Little bit scared. The top of his tail is perhaps broken. He is also a moggie with yellow eyes, but now I have a friend during the day ...and night. My owner told me that I'm a female and I am not spayed. He, Benjamin Frank, is not neutrined and a male. I don't know what that mean spayed?.

Mjau, mjau from Elsa Gloria

Owner, Peter,

They are totally different in character. They are friends now and play together - also during the night. Ok, I'm crazy, but this is what it is. I will publish photos a the new member of the family within a week or two.

I tried to find a male of Bombay or Burmese breed, but it was impossible. I understand why the breeders are so hard and let say correct in that matter. It is to keep the breed Clean.

Best regards,Peter

That's simply not a good idea, because it contributes to cat overpopulation. There are far too many cats looking for homes already. Are you going to make absolutely certain that all the kittens are spayed or neutered? Have you seen these figures?Pet Overpopulation: The Simple Solution. Education, Legislation, Sterilization!
Actual studies taking into account average birth rates, survival rates and life expectancy of feral cats indicate that "Realistically, over 12 years, one unspayed female, with all her unspayed female offspring, reasonably can be expected to be responsible for over 3200 kittens if there is no human intervention."
The ones quoted here are even worse: How many cats will come from two cats left unspayed/unneutered over time?
An unspayed female cat, her mate and all of their offspring, producing 2 litters per year, with 2.8 surviving kittens per litter(the average) can total:

1 Year: 12
2 Years: 67
3 Years: 376
4 Years: 2,107
5 Years: 11,801
6 Years: 66,088
7 Years: 370,092
8 Years: 2,072,514
9 Years: 11,606,077

Hi,

I understand. But I just wanted ElsaGloria to have one time kittens. And then I will let the vet to let both cats to be neutrined and spayed.

But now I wonder if eg is at all interested in Benjamin? I don't know? Benjamin is born the 27th of February 2013. Perhaps heis too Young? But he is big. By the way, Benjamin looks similar to your cat. If I have two cats, do other members on this site let both cats to be on the same log-in? I suppose so. Or?

I will try to upload some new photos - and also photos of Benjamin of course - next week. He is by the way a "New cat on the block.".

Bye for now.

Members are only allowed one account, no matter how many cats they have, so your account covers both Elsa Gloria and Benjamin.

Also note that TCS is a site where cat lovers can come together to share information, get advice and support, etc. It's not against the rules to have the cats "talking", but the preferred method of communication is to have you, as the owner, speak for your cats.

Please inform me how I can publish different albums with photos here on The Catsite? Thank you in advance. One for Elsa Gloria and one for Benjamin Frank (not Franklin. BF-n was one of a kind - a great man.).
