Definitely! The funny part is he was not even a cat person, I converted him! Now he's checking out the window even more than me for cat sightings.  We call it "cat watching" ;)  As soon as it's warmer I am fencing in my property and getting those cool cedar shelters. Knowing my luck I'll do all that and they'll still run off to somewhere else.  :) Hopefully they all appreciate how much we care!  I'm so glad for your good news Whaler.  I will update if I see an Oreo sighting.

glad you showed him what he was missing out on.

there is a newish type of shelter that a colony caretaker showed me, very stylish looking as well as durable and warm. seemed like they would be an ideal shelter to have in a yard. my colony is just in the edge of a woodlands area that abuts my work so i have built them myself - no need for them to be aesthetically pleasing, just durable and warm. i will find a link to it and post it for you

please keep us updated on Oreo

I'm also suffolk county LI (ronk) and got the 30". :( Last winter was so mild - this was a first for at least 7 of my 16. I'm more concerned for my old man ronald (deaf).

I saw 3 of them today, made me feel better. Hearing that Bella is choosing to stay in her house makes me believe that the others are just keeping warm rather than coming to eat.

I don't blame them. Luckily everyone ate BIG (lost of repeat trips to the food stations) before the storm hit.

prayers and vibes for all the furr babies (young and old) and their caretakers.

Our news did report that there was houses collapsing and one nuclear plant doing emergency shutdown from the storm, that sounds quite horrible.

Oreo and her son Jeff came together tonight to eat about 45min ago! I was overjoyed. She unfortunately got in a fight with one of the neighborhood cats that is trying to claim the food as his own. Maybe they are all very hungry since they've been hibernating with this storm. We dug a long path, which all the cats trotted down. she ate a bit and was sitting on the doorstep with leftover food next to her when JC (short for junkyard cat who hangs in my neighbors yard) slowly crept past Oreo and Jeff. Oreo & jeff ran off.  She tried coming back to eat and JC had a staredown with her. When Oreo took off he ran right after her and I heard loud meow screams of distress. JC actually chased her up a tree the first night she was here. I wonder if this territorial stuff will calm down.  The fantastic news is she's alive and I am just so happy for that. I wish I could make them get along! Oreo is my baby girl and I don't want her to get into fights, why is he taunting her- there's plenty of food to go around! Anyways thank you all for your advice and your support.  So happy I found this group.  :)

It's just impossible not to worry about them - especially when it's a first winter. Skor220, I hope they're all just hunkered down.

Continued :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: for the kitties, and everyone, please keep us updated!

linda - thanks you very much. it was such a huge relief when i saw him last night as i was extremely worried about him. although he is a young (about 3.5 years old) and strong (16 lbs of solid muscle) boy he is quite there fraidy cat when it comes to weather.

skor - i really hope that ronald and all the rest of your crew come home soon.

Tiger Cat - any news yet :cross:

also, i found he shelter i was referring to in my previous post

this was oreo (B&W) and Jeff (all black) looking at the camera when jeff was just a wee lil baby. Whitey (who's head is turned away) was the other member of the colony. They all loved each other and had it easy in their old location. Sadly when I transported them here Whitey ran off and has never come back. But momma and son have thankfully stuck around. I don't know if it's possible to keep socializing them and converting them into house cats, but I will keep trying.  I look at my indoor cats and their life is a breeze!

they are home. all kitties have been accounted for. Oreo and Jeff. Even bully cat, who I now know needs to get fixed, he's starting fights with all the other cats (and most importantly my 2 kitties) and chased my Oreo off tonight and I heard them screaming in the distance. bully cat is the next challenge ahead, looks like I have to TNR a new village. (oreo & jeff were fixed several years ago)
At least they're home! :D

Loosing territory can be horrible thing for cats, but I would guess that when they re-establish territory to new location that they start to get to normal routine again, but of course it can take time.

Really sorry to hear about Whitey, might have gotten lost in attempt to find old place and just not knowing how to come back, which is really sad, but there is also not much to do about such.

Jeff looks so much like my Panther that I had to look bit longer of photo before realizing other ones in pic :)

I think that possibility to converting them to house cats is mostly depending of if you have possibility to spend needed amount of time and space to that project, as they are so comfortable with you around and can take photos of them, I would think that they should be much easier to covert than what I have had with Miuku and Mouku, whom were not so relaxed with me around when I started.

Of course it is difficult emotionally at the beginning as they might be very scared and it might appear that all socialization is lost when brought in, but in a year or two (or in days or weeks, if they have tame genes) it starts to pay off for sure.

I would not doubt at all if cats would socialize to humans, with other cats probably too if proper measure are taken (slow introductions and only after they are again ok with you around), but indeed it is not small project and requires own room for them and a lot of time too, so it really depends only from your resources and possibilities.

So happy for all the kitties wonderful. I just talked to a friend of mine. I did not know her mama Mia was missing since sat but mama Mia came home yesterday. Let's hope there are no more big snowstorms coming. Tiger cat when Bella gets into a fight or wants to start a fight I just go right out an yell and the other cats just run away. Most of the time I will sit out side so bell could eat and I make sure no other cats are around while she is eating. Sometimes I even hand feed her. Am I crazy? Hah

thank you everyone.  Whaler suggested Bully Cat probably isn't fixed. I'm going to call today to find out if I can bring him to local clinic to get fixed and TNR him. Linda you are not crazy lol. I do sit and watch over them. Bully just stalks Oreo (maybe he's trying to mate with her- but she's fixed) I try to break it up but lots of times she just takes off b/c she feels threatened and most of the time he doesn't run after her but there seems to be a domination for food now with the storm. Just happy they've weathered the storm and they came home.   Whitey was such a sweet boy. I tried keeping them in my shed to get acclimated (read all the blogs about relocation) they were there for a couple of days when Jeff ran out btwn my feet he turned around to his momma and meowed for her to come.  I knew I wasn't going to get him back into the shed (chasing after a feral cat!?) and I didn't want him to leave on his own and separate the group. I let them all go and put a ton of food out throughout the day/night. That day was so stressful. I figured if I could've kept them in for a few weeks whitey would've still been here.

thanks Whaler!  I hope Whitey found a good place. I'm in horse country here, so I'd have to assume there are a bunch of animal lovers. Hopefully cat lovers as well.  I tried in vain to capture the bully cat tonight per your suggestion even had an appointment tomorrow to get him neutered (he's wayyy dominant). they all come at the same feeding time. Bully cat actually walked 'backwards' up to oreo and jeff where they were hanging out after they ate. I've never seen such a fearless dude. he stepped an inch in the trap (which i had covered with a blanket and-tuna can at the end of the cage but he backed out before hitting the hinge). I've captured 4 other cats no problem. this guy is going to be a challenge for sure!  tomorrow I"ll try sardines. How do you trick a sneaky lil dude like this.

Skor, I missed oreo that first night back, but she was possibly there without me seeing her. Hopefully Ronald already made his way back without you knowing, or if not hoping he's close by.  From what I'm learning these cats are pretty smart and won't leave their food source. how old is ronald? praying he finds his way back to you.
