Update: so today I have started Bo on a 9am, 5pm, 10pm schedule. I will give him wet at 9, a little bit of kibble (haven't figured out how much) and I will leave it for 20 minutes at 5, and then a can of wet at 10pm. He actually DID eat another can of wet overnight (I put it down at about 10 and by morning it was gone).
Maybe this isn't a lost cause.... I'm just scared he will start turning his nose up to everything again :s wish me luck!
Bluebo, he will not turn his nose at everything.
It is important that if he has wet, he doesn't have kibbles though, and learns to eat in a schedule. So make sure to sit with him those 20-30 minutes during meal times....
Are you doing that ready?

He actually prefers to eat alone... when I'm around he waits for me to leave. Every cat is different I guess...

Ok, you do need to have something special for him though. Are you serving fresh out of the bag kibbles?
Perhaps on that plate you can crush some temptation treats to make extra yummy.... And the kibbles you leave for grazing will have no temptations. Put the treats into a bag and hammer them down into a fine powder. Then sprinkle them over the kibbles. You can use that over the wet too. But only over the wet, and the scheduled kibbles!
Leave the Kibbles that have the temptation treats powder for only 20 minutes, then pull the plate. Of course sprinkle temptations over the wet too.
This is going to be your special treat.

This may sound like an odd question, but do you feed the wet in a bowl or on a plate? I had to switch Abby from the wet food she loved to one she hated, because of her allergies. I eventually got her to accept to, only if I fed it to her on a paper plate. I mentioned it to my vet one time and she said that cats do prefer to eat off of flat surfaces.
It's not an odd question to me, because Jamie thinks wet food only tastes good from glass salad plates. It makes sense, because cats like to pick out the "best spot" to start eating wet food from, and a plate doesn't disturb their whiskers. It's certainly worth trying.

Stainless bowls do seem to have their own peculiar scent; if we can smell it, how much stronger must it be to a cat or dog?

That's kind of what I was thinking! The smell is pretty gross to me... what would he think about it?? Well I switched him over to a porcelain saucer.

How is it going Bluebo? Did you change the plates? Are you working on a schedule? Did you try the crombled temptation treats? Any developments?

I changed the dish I feed in to a porcelain saucer (small plate). I just cold turkey started giving him wet food and he has now eaten all wet for 2 full days! sooo proud of my Bo! I have taken the kibble away because I believe that any scent of them will just cause him to reject the wet. I also think changing the food dish that he ate from was HUGE for him! Maybe the metallic smell just didn't agree with him..?

Congratulations! It really could have been a matter of how the wet food smelled in the stainless steel bowl. The main thing is that he's accepted the wet now, whatever the reason.

:woohoo:

Good!
yes - having kibbles to graze on all day works against you on a wet diet introduction, that's for sure.... - I didn't know you would have the guts to do this.... :lol3::lol3::lol3: I thought You wanted to take it slow :walk: :thud: GREAT job Bluebo!!! Great news! GO BO!:clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

So, how's his schedule, and how much is he eating a day?

I feed him twice daily. He gets his first meal at 9am and grazes on it (kind of like kibble) until about lunch time. Then he gets his second meal at 8pm and eats the entire thing almost right away... I know... he's a weirdo! He gets 2 3oz cans of Fancy Feast plus a little bit Whiskas pate (he is OBSESSED with the Whiskas so I have to be careful with that). So he gets about 7-8oz per day, which is all he will eat.

I honestly think it was the dish! I smelled it with the wet food in it and I would be disgusted too!

Oh, that's plenty for an 8lb cat!:clap::clap::clap:
GREAT JOB :clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

He is not a weirdo.... He is hungry..... He doesn't have all that kibble... 1/2 cup of kibbles is all he needed in terms of nutrition for the day, for an 8lb kitty - you took that off.... He wants food now.... And food he gets :bigthumb:

Are you freezing the other foods - wellness, evo and such? you can make tiny cubes with them - not big - don't rock the boat now :lol3:
And start introducing a variety of food to him a bit later.
You want to feed a variety of foods to him for various reasons - 1 so he doesn't get bored.... 2- so he gets different nutrients, 3- so he doesn't become finicky, and last but not at all the least, you don't become a victim of a finicky cat during a recall situation - and that can certainly happen

The way to introduce it, is to mix just a little bit into his FAVORITE food - the one that he is obscessed with - then you build up the qty from there until that he is eating all of the new food and none of the old. Much like you would introduce a kibble - slowly tricking him into liking the new food

Making tiny frozen cubes of different foods will help you and keep you from tossing $$$$ on the trash -

I am SO happy for you!!!

Told you could do it - it was just a matter of finding the missing link!!!! Glad you DID not give up :clap::clap::clap:

Right now I just have the lower quality brands. I'm alternating between Fancy Feast and Whiskas. In about a week I will try adding the higher quality wets (I'm thinking Evo and Wellness). He HATES Friskies so that's not an option.... I'm not even going to push it. I'm thankful for the progress we've made! I will definitely try the ice cube tray idea! Thanks so much for your help Carolina. I truly appreciate it :rbheart:

Shoshhhh He will not! :lol3:

Do you have different flavors of Fancy feast and Whiskas? Flavors he showed a liking in the past? For now make sure to vary the flavors so he doesn't get bored  The elemnt of surprise will work on your favor
