Hi peoples.. Im just wondering if you happen to know if it is normal or good for a kitten to sleep a lot whilst they are sick and on antibiotics?
I have a kitten who is sick with the flu at the moment. I have had him here for 3 days now and is 10 weeks old, he wasnt sneezing much on the first day, only a couple of times but then the next day he was constantly sneezing and so me and my partner decided not to take any chances and knew it was abnormal so we took him to our local vet today and they gave him a vaccination and a flu shot.

They also gave us antibiotics to give our kitten twice a day for 7 days. He doesnt have the gooey eyes or discharge from the nose and the man said that he seems to be a healthy kitty and should be fine in the next few days (hope to god, fingers crossed).

He is sleeping pretty much ever since we got him home from the vet, and that was bout some time in the afternoon like round.. 3pm and it is now 10:16pm. Although he was up for a little bit at one point but not for long because he just preferred to go back to sleep poor thing is probably drowsy and just really needs sleep i think..
But im here asking if it is good for him to be sleeping it off because he has been sleeping a fair amount of hours, very tired poor little fella.. im just hoping he will get over this sicky and will be ok again :) good as new.

Any experiences? or have dealt with the same issue and the outcome was good?

Seriously? The vet gave a sick kitten vaccinations? I'd be finding a new vet, pronto. Only healthy animals should be vaccinated, and those shots are now taxing this poor kitten's immune system even more. That's why he's lethargic now. What exactly was the "flu shot" anyway?

So then why the antibiotics? Most kitten URIs are from a virus, which antibiotics would have no effect on. If there is a secondary infection then they can be useful, but that doesn't seem to be the case here if there isn't any gooey discharge. Do you know what kind of antibiotics they are? Is your kitten still eating okay? It's very important that he eat enough as kittens can go downhill very quickly if they aren't, so keep a careful eye on that. What are you feeding him?

Seriously? well it was our first time to this vet and I've clearly never actually been to one ever in my life up until now. So i obviously wasn't too sure on how these things go but of course my partner and I had some idea and only now realizes that he knew he should of asked the man if it were right to give our kitten the vaccination whilst sick.

Tomorrow we will be giving this vet a call and have a talk with him but honestly maybe do have to go see another vet!

Sorry for the confusion on the flu shot, i believe it was just all part of the vaccination so there was no actual flu shots. So to clarify the vet gave him his second vaccination, and sent us on our way with the antibiotics. The antibiotics are called Betamox Palatable Drops, we are giving it to him twice daily (4 drops each time).

As of writing this he has been sleeping for most the day following the vet (12 hours). He has eaten small amounts a few times in that period. He is certainly not his playful self, as he was yesterday (even with the sneezing). We are quite concerned, so we appreciate your replies and help.

He is probably not feeling good, so a lot of sleeping is not too much of a concern.  You said he's getting up and eating some now, so that is an improvement.  Keep a careful eye on him, and with any luck, he'll get better.  But kittens can crash in a big hurry, so if you get really concerned, don't hesitate to get him to the vet.

I think others thought you meant you got him some of his regular vaccinations (rabies, etc.) at this time.  A lot of cats have some reaction to those vaccinations, so that might be part of the problem, too, but if all you got was the rhinovirus vaccination, that's probably normal.

Thanks for the response. We will be keeping a close eye on him and see how things go tomorrow.

We are in Australia (not sure if vaccines differ from the US), but we had the Fevac F4 Vaccine. It shows it is for rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, chlamydia and ehteritis. Awful lot for our little kitty to handle it seems. But with that information, would your advice still be the same? Thank you again!
