Rescued Kitten

Not sure where to put this but I put it here.

Many people think I shouldnt get another cat. But, rather then mourn my loss I wanted to celebrate Chloes life by helping another kitten in need. I went with a friend to view some kittens tonight. The mother had a litter of 12 week olds and was nursing a 4 week old litter and was pregnant (all kittens were hers). There were like 20 cats in the house. They were flea infested and full of worms. My friend took two females and I had to take a male.

I plan to get him vaccinated then neutered at the appropriate age, right now I am treating him for worms (which I think he has) and had been treated for the fleas. My dog didnt take the death well and was refusing to eat, so I thought the kitten would help him move on as well. Dont ask why I have my tree up, I have no idea myself LOL. I need to buy bulbs for it..

Aww, I think it's sweet that you got a new kitty. It's never too soon as long as YOU'RE ready for it. He's a fine handsome kitty, too. He'll be a real stunner when he grows up.

Yes, it's a good bet that he has fleas and worms. Probably tapeworms, too, from the fleas. . .you'll have to get something from the vet for those. You should have him tested for FeLV/FIV, too. . .if he's the only cat in the home it's not a huge deal, but just to know what you're dealing with.

Hope your doggie likes him just as much!

It's sad about the mother cat's situation. That family needs help.

I am not to worried about FeLV/FIV at this time. I dont intend to get another cat at this time. If I do then I will have him tested . I have stuff here I use that kills tapeworms. His belly isnt too big. If what I have doesnt work I will grab some stuff from the vet. I am going to upload a few more pics once my floor dries from being mopped..camera is on other side of the room yet the usb is right in front of me..go figure my luck.

I always think it's a good idea to test for FeLV/FIV even if he's an only cat, just because if he's positive, extra precautions will be needed for his neuter, and you'll need to be extra vigilant with even mild illnesses.

Careful with OTC tapeworm meds. It's strong medicine and it's easy to overdose, and some OTC meds have harmful inactive ingredients.

I'd love to see more pics! I can't get over how handsome he is. I wonder if his fur will get longer or if he'll always be medium-haired.

I use a natural wormer actually, I will get his shots done and will test for that when I do his pre neuter blood work. Here are some pictures.

Link is trying so hard

I LOVE your new kitten! Orange is such an awesome color. I'm glad you are able to help another cat even though you are still mourning chloe

Haha! I love the ones where he's poofed up at the dog.

Do you use DE for de-worming? I've heard of the concept but have never tried it.

I thought about it for a few days. When I lost my service dog Gunner, I got Lincoln almost right away and he helped me heal through losing Gunner. So I applied that theory to the cats. Chloe, she changed my views on cats. I have always hated cats with a passion. I always thought they were sneaky little fur balls out to stalk you. Hated them. I rescued Chloe with the intent to rehome her..but that never happened. She changed my view on cats, now even though I have a slight allergy to them (every now and again I get stuffed up but I just take a Benedryl), I love them. They are nice animals. So I thought by rescuing another one that may other wise not have a chance would repay my horrible deed and let her memory live on. I will never be able to change what happened, but much rather educate people on the importance of spaying females (cat or dog). Yes prolapses are rare but there is no need to chance having another innocent life go through that again, ignorance is bliss. It happened to my cat, was very unfortunate and I will hope when people hear my story they decide to spay.

I will never replace her, ever. But Carson (I think I will name him that), will help me move on and remember her.

As we speak he has given up playing in his water bowl and is now beating the crap out of my shower curtains...why do I like cats again

Congrats on the new addition.

Once you've cleared up his worms and he's deemed healthy, so long as he weighs over 2lbs you can neuter him at any time.

Oh that poor cat, can you ring someone about those appalling conditions? That poor girl will die from having continuous babies, not to mention the fleas and worms.

Well its not against the law for people to let their pets breed unless it causes a health problem..like what I had with mine. Fleas, same thing unless is causes a health issue. Sad but true the only thing that would be done was they would have to remove enough cats to make the household only have three which is the legal limit.

Laws here suck

I would say that neglecting to properly de-parasitize your pets probably constitutes "failure to provide necessary medical care" (which is the law almost everywhere). But you're right; it's not likely much would be done.

Letting your pet breed continuously is cruel but not illegal, and I don't approve of number limits on pets (for obvious reasons. . .:p), although for that family it probably would be best to remove most of the cats so they could catch up on parasite control and, hopefully, spay/neuter. Sad, anyway. Poor mama cat probably won't last another year.

I'm so laughing at this! Kittens are so full of energy and really keep you on your toes!!

I'm so pleased you've rescued another kitty and your views on cats has changed. I, too, used to be a dog person until Callie adopted me.

True, but there are low cost spay/neuter clinics in nearly every area. In some places there are even free or very low cost to low income families. It would be worth checking into.

Nope I checked, I called EVERY ONE until my ears fell off. The SPCA doesnt do a clinic. The only clinic is the one I mentioned. The next one is in Toronto which is 1.5 hours from me and when you dont have access to a car...

Carson hasnt used his litter box yet....I dont wanna let him have roam until he does. Canada doesnt have nearly the amount of resources the US does sadly

I agree with that statement 100%. There are NO low cost spay/neuter clinics here and I wish more than anything that there were. The cost to spay/neuter here is very high and unfortunately deters a lot of people. The cost IS cheaper when adopting through the shelter, but trying to convince people to go that route isn't always easy because a lot of people don't want to pay up front. Very frustrating.

Carson could not be more adorable and I must add ...
if I ever have a dog, I would want him to have a personality just like Lincoln's. :

I look forward to seeing more of your little tiger.

His name may change..have to wait and see his personality.

good adopting. We got our 4 month old kitten, Samara, from the same type of situation and I think she is grateful to be in a nice home. Hope your little buddy uses his box soon. We kept ours in the bathroom for 3-4 days away from our dog until she was defleaed/dewormed and vetted and she was using the box but she came litter trained though.

He looks like a baby Taz, with a full tail (see the picture in My Cats)

Taz was originally going to be Simba, BUT, he was the most frantically hyper active kitten I have ever seen, resulting in the name, Taz.

He has become slower, and a bit more dignified, as an older adult.

Oooh, Carson (for now) is adorable!! I remember when my guys were around 12 weeks. Scary, scary time. They learned to climb curtains- at the house I was house sitting! I had to tuck them all up on the curtain rod, but they were definitely craaaazy for awhile there.

Good luck with the little guy! He is cute!

I'm sorry. I didn't realize that you weren't in the U.S.

That is such a shame. Too bad there isn't a compassionate vet that would offer his/her services one day a month for a reasonable fee like $30-60 and just do them in assembly line fashion. We have several clinics in our area, and that is how they do it. The last time I helped a friend bring in her cats, there must have easily been 20 cats and 10 dogs getting fixed that day. Of course the vet has helpers, but that is still about $1,500 for the day, if not more.

They are going to be good friends! They are so cute!

Good for you! Had a similar thing happen over the summer. I lost my "baby" Girlfriend on June 24th and her son Rodney died May 20th. Both died of cancer that spread to their lungs. Rodney was a surprise, but Girlfriend I knew our time was limited. Anyways I didn't want to replace them or go through the pain of losing another. But after thinking about it, I decided they would want me to give another cat that was very likely going to die a miserable death a home and shower them with love. Good on you! He's adorable and looks like he's feeling your dog out a bit. Thanks for sharing the pics of him, he's so cute!

What a scrumptious little baby. Good on ya for saving him. And same for trying to help the cats in that terrible situation.

He's so cute! The pictures with the dog crack me up. I take two of my cats to my mom's house. One of her four dogs is interested in them, but they're all pretty terrified of them. When Ozzy, who was a 4 pound kitten at the time, sneezed, they ran in four different directions and crashed into furniture . Ozzy's a total fraidy cat otherwise, but he thinks he's Mr. Tough when there are dogs around .
