Good morning! Here's today's Question of The Day!

If it is the same story, would you rather read the book, or see the movie?

I love to read, so this is kind of a no-brainer for me. I think my imagination is much more vivid than any movie production company could come up with.

Read the book. When I'm reading, I can envision everything in my mind. I can't do that with a movie. (Good question!)

Read the book too. I get a bit worried about seeing a movie when I've read the book, but in the end it's a different art form so you just have to bear that in mind.

I'm an avid reader and will generally always prefer to read the book. Many movies have ruined some of my favorites!

The only notable exception I can think of is Lord of the Rings. I hated the writing style in the books and it was a chore to get through them. Absolutely loved the movies though.

I would most definitely rather read the book. I have read and then seen the movie and I was always disappointed in the movie. There is so much more in the book that movies leave out or change the ending.

If I had time I would choose to read the book, but with a little one it's easier to watch the movie. She can always be bribed with popcorn to sit still and be quiet for a little while.

Always the book.
Battlefield Earth was a wonderful book, though long, but the movie completely butchered it.
Same for I, Robot

I'm a huge Asimov fan and I dread the day they decide to make movies from the Foundation Trilogy.

Book. I can usually read the book quicker than watching the movie, things won't be left out, and it's cheaper (than going to see a movie or renting).

My thoughts exactly. I've read quite a few Isaac Asimov books and I liked them all. His robot series was one of my favorites, but the movie didn't do it justice at all. Unfortunately, the way I see it is it's only a matter of time before someone makes a movie based on the Foundation Trilogy, and later the entire Foundation series. With 10 books in total it will probably be a trilogy of movies. I doubt any of them are going to follow the books really closely.

In response to the question, I always try to read the book first.

It depends on how good the movie director is vs. the writer of the book..
The same story can be told in different ways, and some writers just don't write in an interesting and engaging way..
And the same goes for movie directors, some just make crappy movies even if it's based on a good story.

In most cases the book is better than the movie, but I think that's just because movie directors always choose really good books to base their movie off of, because in a sense it's their inspiration. It's hard to beat something when it's already been done and people have loved it in its original form.

Generally I love to read, and I've given up going to the movies and watching movies, unless it's for social purposes and my friends want me to go with them...There hasn't been a movie I've liked in a loooong time with the exception of Avatar. But some movies just leave me in awe, and I think the film genre has just as much potential to entertain as literature, but this potential isn't being used at the moment, maybe because of what the audience is demanding isn't the same as what I'd like to see..
But I read a lot and there are sooo many books to choose from and I love all the stuff I've been reading. I also read quicker, I can get to the important stuff fast and find out what's going on in a book, I can't do that with a movie..

Depends on my desire to read the book, I for example, have enjoyed all the Harry Potter movies but have enough books on my "to read" list that theyll never make the cut. In most cases I make it a point to do both - so I can compare and/or complain about the differences!

On the whole, I'd choose reading the book, because it's not uncommon for the movie to fall short of it. There are exceptions, though; for instance, I refuse to read another Dan Brown, because his writing style stinks, but his stories are good and translate to the screen well, so I'd certainly see movies based on his books.
