Thank you darlili and otto for your kind words. as much as i dont want to admit this, without the results, but her stomach has definately(cant spell) grown in two days.Since being in the vet for a day and a half, she has become lethargic and quiet. Its depressing and so awful i cant even think. my mind is so elsewhere that i nearly gave my fish, the bird food, cant seem to concentrate on anything but her. i am so afraid she is in pain but i am just trying to make her as comfortable as possible. thanks again everyone.xxxx

I am so sorry you and your girl are going through this... The vet didn't drain the fluid in her belly?
Love love love your girl... never underestimate the power of love! Make sure she keeps eating and drinking, even if she is lethargic...
My prayers are with you and her - Don't lose hope - there is no diagnostic test for FIP (on live cats), so don't lose hope!

I'm so sorry your kitty is sick. I hope they can find some answers soon and that it turns out to be something that can be treated to make her well.

Thinking of you

hi everyone, got the results back. ITS NOT FIP!!!!!i am so pleased , but the vet says i must not get too happy as what ever she has to cause such fluid build up , cant be good. so we are now waiting for the results from the abdominal fluid(testing for proteins , liver or something like that) she is still eating like a horse and purring like a V8 motor. does any one have any ideas what this could be?how do you post pictures on this site, i want to show you what she looks like.xxx

hi carolinalima, yesterday it seemed smaller but today it looks worse, more swollen. i asked if there is any small chance she could be pregnant( i know its a dumb question but i had to ask) , she said that maybe she is pregnant on top of whats wrong but the fluid build up is way too high for a pregnancy.xx

YAY! This wonderful to hear.

Has the fluid been drained to make her more comfortable, and to see how quickly it builds up again?

I have a question though, how does the vet know it isn't FIP? As far as I know there really isn't anyway to test for it?

Fluid buildup could be from heart problems, I've read some references to that over the years. An ultrasound would show if she's pregnant. That's something to find out as soon as possible. If she is I wonder what would be harder on her little body, carrying and giving birth, or an immediate spay?

But anyway I am smiling big that FIP has been ruled out.

Hi Otto, i too am so glad its not FIP. i am very confused with the testing story too but apparently they test for the virus, which alot of cats can have but not show symptoms(kind of like how we can get the swine flu virus and carry it but not show symptoms... something like that) they just need to rule that FIP out first apparently.i know its something serious but i am just holding on to hope that we can fight it and fix it. i still dont know why they have not done an an ultrasound yet, i would ( if i was a vet, which i am not!, unfortuntely) just to rule out the basic things. but i have my Jesse now, and in the back of my mind i know there is not alot of hope, but i am just praying real hard and loving her and hoping that will be enough. will let you know what happens tomorrow, the wait is awful.xxxxx

Dear Troant,

Sorry for what you and your dear little kitten are going through <hugs> please insist the vet do an ultrasound. An ultrasound will reveal a lot! Also has a full blood panel been done and was she tested for worms?

If your baby is eating heartily that is a very good sign!

Hang in there! <hugs>

One less R - pyometra. I was wondering about that or a false pregnancy? If this is the case, and hopefully it's caught soon, a spaying should take care of it.

Yes this is what I was getting at.

We've had two cases of closed pyo in my group of friends lately. One was a Persian female 8 months old who had been at the vets and they hadn't picked it up. She died. Second case was a Burmilla female she was 3 years old and had just had a dead kitten and went in for mating but the male wouldn't mate her as he must have known something was wrong. She died.

I would definitely check for this!

The danger of a pyometra infection is just one of the many reasons spaying of female cats and dogs is so strongly recommended. (It can usually be addressed if caught early enough - it's so sad those two cats died.
)

I haven't heard that these infections are very common in kittens, Troant, but if your vet is still at a loss, it is definitely worth mentioning the possibility to him. I sure hope he figures out what's wrong soon!

For you both

hi everyone!vet phoned me today, they got full report back from lab. high protein levels and their final summary was that even though the test was negative for FIP, they feel that judging by her age and high levels they feel it is FIP even though it tested neg.she said alot of other things which in her mind makes sense but i dont understand it. jes is scheduled for full ab scan on tuesday and if nothing irregular is found, they feel it is FIP. they dont think they can drain the fluid as the protein levels are too high which will cause her distress( i cant remember word for word but something like that). i feel hopeless and too sad to even cry. i asked about the P thing you mentioned but she said that it is not that. this is so awful but i will just wait and see once more.xx

I don't know if it will help in your case, but there have been people on here who have given FIP cats Interferon with good results.
