Has anyone tried the Emery Cat scratching board? - Page 4

I ordered the buy one get one and (even with 7 cats) none of them used them at all. I ended up throwing them out because I was tired of tripping over them. My cats use the sisal and carpet scratching posts.

they have them at petsmart for $19.99 now.

He adores it.. he'll sit down in the middle of the living room, look at me, get the "crazy eyes" and run over to it pounce on it scratch at it psychotically and take off.

for $20 I'd reccomend it, They have the cat emery at Rite Aid on sale this week, but after the reviews including their misleading purchasing set up, I cannot honestly contribute to their business and really, I'm sure Madison would turn up his nose in comparison to the scratcher he has.

Glad I didn't try to order the emery offline, yeesh.

I ordered the '2 for 1' emerycat board for 19.95 + s&p (7.95x2) a couple of weeks ago. Today 2 boxes tied together were delivered and I decided to check my visa online before opening. Imagine my surprise when the charge was 96.00!!!!
I opened one box to see if there was any kind of invoice but no ....there wasn't but there were 2 emerycatboards with the 'emery'all over the place like salt. So, I opened the 2nd box for the invoice and there were 2 more emeryboards but no invoice. So they have sent me 4 which I didn't order.
Can we go to Olsen on Your Side for things like this???
I have since sprinkled the catnip on one emerycat board and my cat climbed over the emery once but has since not looked at it or made any attempt to go near it.
I will try and get through to Customer Service tomorrow but from what i now hear- it could take along frustrating time.

I saw this thing at walmart about 2 weeks ago, and bought one.

The cats showed an interest at first.. it was something new that smelled of cat nip. They played with the lil fuzzy toy too.

I've only caught Tabbi actually using it tho, and not too often. I wouldnt expect Bastet or Mellow to bother with it, as they are declawed (they came to me like that- I didnt do it!)... I was really hoping Gozer would like it, because she is the main culprit to the destroyed woodwork.

So Mom and I ordered these before reading this thread. The only one who actually uses it is Cleo II and her claws are just as sharp as they were before. Waste of money in my opinion.

I brought Mom's over to her house last night and her 2 cats, Oliver and Orbie, were MUCH more interested in the box it came in than the actual scratcher itself.

Those are funny stories... aside from the cost!

Everytime I see these at WM, I laugh to myself and think of this thread...
If I ever wanted to try something like those for my cats Id just steal some of BFs sand paper and glue it to a scratcher and see what happens. I saw one at WM and it looks so cheap and grundgy Ill never ever buy one. Half the time either the sisal posts are fine or when I bring a piece of wood in the house and stand it up Hercules goes bonkers for it and scratches the bejeepers out of the wood.

I ordered it on Christmas Day, and just got it today, 5 days later.

So far, my cat loves it.
I will agree with the above. However I can see the traps in ordering. Unlike ordering from other sites you do have to read it. I was charged correctly for one order which includes two scratchers. Buyer be wary. Now let's see if the kitties use it. Also, I did have to call customer service, the link is at the bottom of the website, and had a helpful experience.

I just saw something that might help, incase someone wants to try one of these for cheaper than $20. Petsmart sells the refils for these scratchers, and they look alot like the cury cardboard scratchers that many of you have. I am pretty sure that it would work without the "base."

NO! I did not buy one, lol. I bought a turbo track instead, Poodle looooves it.

I seen this at Walmart and was about to get it until I looked at the price. I get something similar but costs $10.00 half the price and I think its basically the same. http://www.petsmart.com/product/inde...ductId=2754331 Like this but doesn't have the tilt to it.

"Glass particles?" Most sand is granular silica, from which glass is made, but I wouldn't call it "glass particles."
Ya.. so had it about a month or so...

Tabbi uses it on occasion. The other cats dont bother with it.

however, her nails still need trimmed. This thing doesnt wear down the nails like it claims.

If you havent purchased one.. dont waste your money. There's cheaper scratch pads, that the cats prefer to use.

Well, I guess if it seems to good to be true, then it probably is too good to be true. I ordered a set of two, and took advantage of the two free boards. Little did I realize (until it was too late) that the postage/handling fee would be almost $32! The cats wouldn't touch the boards, and I don't blame them. I don't know what substance is on the top of them, but it almost feels like pieces of glass to me. I'm returning them, and lose $32 - but hope by posting this, I'll save you some money instead.

Hi. I am new here. I have one cat. I found this emery board at walgreens. I thought it would work for my cat as she loves cardboard. Everytime I get a box she scratches it like crazy. She also loves the carboard ones that you can get at the petstore that come in the little boxes.
But she refuses to touch this! It is very flimsy. If it tips over the cardboard falls out. I have tried to put catnip on it and that did not help. She will lick the catnip off but nothing more! She also likes the toy. But she did not seem to like the feel of the board. The first day I brought it home she was excited to see something she could scratch. But after the first day she has not touched it since. So I guess I will stick to plain cardboard.
Yeah we tried it too... Out of my 8 only 2, Cleo II and Elliott, would use it and it did nothing at all to file their claws.
Just chiming in that none of my cats even give this scratching post much of a look let alone a try! I have better results with the turbo scratcher- they love the cardboard ring in the center of it. Even the kittens won't venture on the emery board scratching pad. I bought mine at a local grocery store- not from the website. But in my book, this is a total waste of money.

Hi guys.
With 2 of my cats I have never had problems, but my third cat always kicks, and bites when I try to clip/trim his claws. Sometimes my niece helps me wrapping him in a towel but he gets very mad and always escapes. In the past years I have tried clipping them at night when he's sleeping and he wakes up and runs away!

I have been reading this thread and wonder if there's something new that could help cats trim claws "by their own". Is this turbo scratcher good for that? Please give me some suggestions

Well if you read the thread then you know this Emery scratcher is not the

answer.

You might try using an incentive system with your struggling kitty to help him associate the nail trimming with good things. Approach the whole thing in a calm way, wrap in the towel and use a soft wet something like mayo, butter or yogurt.

I use little drops of mayonaise, and put some on the kitty's mouth, and do some snips as she is busy licking it off. then put some more on her mouth, do a few more snips and so on. She really hates having it done, and this helps make it more pleasant for her.

An alternative to the towel is to get a cat restraint bag for this kitty. such as this one:

I recently had to bring my cat into the vet to check out his left eye that seemed to be bothering him. His inner eye lid was red and inflamed. He's an indoor cat so I don't know how he could have injured himself. I suspect that the new emery board scratcher I bought was the culprit. When I rubbed my finger on the surface a fine granular sand comes off. I've since gotten rid of it!
Those of you who want their cats claws to be a bit less sharp and can't clip them- just buy a hardwood scratcher. If you live near the beach and it is legal, go get a piece of driftwood (be sure and treat it with an insecticide from your VET let it air dry for a few days and put it in the house. Same goes if you live near a forest or park. Look for good sturdy limbs or logs.

If you don't have this option- then visit a secondhand store, look for a really sturdy piece of wooden furniture- chairs, step stools etc. When the cats sharpen their claws on such hard wood, it sheds their nail casings and blunts their nails. I have a "sacrificial" sofa upstairs they use- it is the only furniture they scratch. Also in their enclosure they have logs and limbs they run and climb and scratch on.

This company is a total rip off. I placed an order online - it should have been $25 complete with shipping. When I got to the online receipt they charged me $87.00!! And half of that was shipping charges. I tried immediately to cancel but no go. I had to wait for "customer service" to open in the morning which was anything but. I was on the phone with them 30 minutes after they opened and they said it was too late to cancel the order. It had been shipped already, yeah right!? I refused the pkg when it arrived and disputed the charge with AMEX but I'm still waiting fore the refund. 2 months so far. Anyway I found out since that the product is cheap, lightweight and small. Did you notice they used a kitten in the sales photo?? Shame on them.

Bottom line: bad product, bad business practices RUN AWAY FROM THIS ONE!!

I bought one from WalMart and Pikachu loves it-she still tries to go after the furniture on occasion though. She's already shredded her first Emerycat and is on the second one. Boy do they make a mess when you take them out of the plastic casing! Sand everywhere-like a bad trip to the beach. This time I'm going to remove the file part over a trash can. Also, after some use, it sheds little bits of paper around it...but the cat does have one heck of a time using it, and it's easy enough to vacuum up.

I bought this today for $4.95 on sale from $19.99 at the local grocery store. My five month old maine coon kitten loves it as does my five year old maine coon cat. The siamese like to roll on it. I notice the kittens nails aren't as sharp as they were before. I definitely wouldn't pay full price for it...they enjoy the little feather thing that comes with it more than the board. I have the circle toy which i bought for my oldest siamese cat 15 years ago and they all still play with it. Funny tho, when one of them get tired of hearing the ball go around and around they will lay across it so no one can play with it....

This bears repeating, thanks for posting your warning.

i bought mine at bed bath and beyond, used a $5 off coupon. however, the 1st day we had it my boy broke the tail on a stick that connects to the top of the thing. so i returned it and got another. he really doesn't scratch his claws on it tho. i tried it and it didn't file my nails i demonstrated what he was supposed to do, but like all the other comments, he really wasn't too interested. i may just return it for a refund.

I have the Emery Cat Board. Lynxx is afraid of it. Luna originally used to try to get underneath it. Now she knows how to use it, and is the only 1 who uses it. Midnight just sits on it, looks at us with a look that says "ok now what?". It seems to work ok for Luna. Luna's claws aren't the problem. It's Midnight's claws that are the problem, his grow back quick and their super sharp! Now we're trying the Soft Paws, the plastic covers that go over their claws. Midnight gets them off as fast as he can.

Has anyone else ever tried the scratch and lounge. I bought it for my cat who likes to scratch the molding in the doorway and she is in LOVE with it. She uses it everyday and her and my other cat fight over laying in it. I'll have to buy another one soon. It does a good job with her nails too.

http://scratchlounge.com/

Here is the website for it. It's good for the environment too - made from recycled materials
