Glad this thread came up, I'd been thinking about buying one. After hearing about stuck claws I think I'll just forget it, if I have to spend money at the vet I'd rather it were for claw trimming than for treating an injury.

WOW...Great to have found this link! We were going to order it, since Lazarus destroyed our couches...but hearing these reviews, I think I'll pass....We'll just try the cardboard ones instead!

And the idea or pulling out a nail? OUCH! Definite pass!

My cat wanted nothing to do with the Emery Scratching Post. I tried playing with her with the feather like toy provided, but when she licked the toy. The fuzz had to be removed from her mouth. A week later she was sneezing and her eyes weeped shut. THe Vet said that she didn't have a temp. That she must have a head cold????? Not knowing what caused her illness, I removed the Emery Board to re-introduce it at a later time. She immediately showed signs of improvement. Now well, I re-introduced her to the Emory Board this week. She started sneezing and her eyes again started to weep. So, it my be a coincidence but after removing the Emory Board she is fine.

My cat keeps scratching on my carpet. I clip his nails regularly, but he still scratches. I don't want to de-claw him and have been tempted to buy this. I found this page while doing a search for a review of the Emery Cat Board.

Thanks for all the input from the members here. I won't be ordering it. He doesn't use his scratching post much and that's why I was skeptical buying this too.

Have many of you had luck with the cardboard ones you can buy at most stores?

Hello and Welocme to TCS! There are many different choices for scratchers for cats. If your cat likes scratching flat surfaces a cardboard scratcher might work, or you might try these:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/SmartyKat-...r-Cats/8110821

I wanted to post pics of my own cats using them, as they go crazy over them, but photobucket is not working this morning

In addition a cat tree will help, but some cats have to be trained to use their own furniture to scratch.

You do it like this: when you see kitty scratch somewhere you don't want him to, gently pick him up and put him where you do want him to scratch.

Show him by scratching it yourself. Cats are the original copy cats, and if he sees you doing it, he will do it, too.

I have to add that none of the other scratchers 'trim' the nails. They give kitty a appropriate place to scratch their nails though.

If your cat is messing up the carpet with his nails, trimming his nails is far nicer than declawing. There is even a product called 'soft paws' that works great, it's little caps that you glue on their nails (after you trim the nail) and prevents them from tearing up fabrics and skin. You can do a search on here for info on trimming nails, and about 'soft paws.'

We don't have a cardboard one, but we do have a scratching post and a scratch mat. The mat has a zippered pouch to hold catnip to entice the cat to use it. Looks like this:

PLEASE do not have your cat declawed, there are so many other options.

I have used those cardboard rounds that fit into a plastic ring that has a ball that goes round and round. I had considered changing to this Emery Cat, but I think I will stay with the sisal scratching posts and these cardboard rounds. I also have plastic combs that fit over the corners of walls so the babies can scratch their chins.

I, too, have leather furniture that cost me a bundle that is worthless now thanks to a couple of our ten cats (all rescues).

Thanks for the heads up!

I ordered the buy one get one and (even with 7 cats) none of them used them at all. I ended up throwing them out because I was tired of tripping over them. My cats use the sisal and carpet scratching posts.

for $20 I'd reccomend it, They have the cat emery at Rite Aid on sale this week, but after the reviews including their misleading purchasing set up, I cannot honestly contribute to their business and really, I'm sure Madison would turn up his nose in comparison to the scratcher he has.

Glad I didn't try to order the emery offline, yeesh.

I ordered the '2 for 1' emerycat board for 19.95 + s&p (7.95x2) a couple of weeks ago. Today 2 boxes tied together were delivered and I decided to check my visa online before opening. Imagine my surprise when the charge was 96.00!!!!
I opened one box to see if there was any kind of invoice but no ....there wasn't but there were 2 emerycatboards with the 'emery'all over the place like salt. So, I opened the 2nd box for the invoice and there were 2 more emeryboards but no invoice. So they have sent me 4 which I didn't order.
Can we go to Olsen on Your Side for things like this???
I have since sprinkled the catnip on one emerycat board and my cat climbed over the emery once but has since not looked at it or made any attempt to go near it.
I will try and get through to Customer Service tomorrow but from what i now hear- it could take along frustrating time.

I saw this thing at walmart about 2 weeks ago, and bought one.

The cats showed an interest at first.. it was something new that smelled of cat nip. They played with the lil fuzzy toy too.

I've only caught Tabbi actually using it tho, and not too often. I wouldnt expect Bastet or Mellow to bother with it, as they are declawed (they came to me like that- I didnt do it!)... I was really hoping Gozer would like it, because she is the main culprit to the destroyed woodwork.

So Mom and I ordered these before reading this thread.
The only one who actually uses it is Cleo II and her claws are just as sharp as they were before. Waste of money in my opinion.

I brought Mom's over to her house last night and her 2 cats, Oliver and Orbie, were MUCH more interested in the box it came in than the actual scratcher itself.

Trapped in the catroom! ;o)
If I ever wanted to try something like those for my cats Id just steal some of BFs sand paper and glue it to a scratcher and see what happens. I saw one at WM and it looks so cheap and grundgy Ill never ever buy one. Half the time either the sisal posts are fine or when I bring a piece of wood in the house and stand it up Hercules goes bonkers for it and scratches the bejeepers out of the wood.

I ordered it on Christmas Day, and just got it today, 5 days later.

So far, my cat loves it.
I will agree with the above. However I can see the traps in ordering. Unlike ordering from other sites you do have to read it. I was charged correctly for one order which includes two scratchers. Buyer be wary. Now let's see if the kitties use it. Also, I did have to call customer service, the link is at the bottom of the website, and had a helpful experience.

I just saw something that might help, incase someone wants to try one of these for cheaper than $20. Petsmart sells the refils for these scratchers, and they look alot like the cury cardboard scratchers that many of you have. I am pretty sure that it would work without the "base."

NO! I did not buy one, lol. I bought a turbo track instead, Poodle looooves it.
