Do the vets there give cyproheptadine to help stimulate appetite with IBD cats? It works great and is a great help in getting them to eat ( as long as they are not vomiting).

Lots and lots of for Monday's vet visit
Thank you
We were given some tablets before she had steroids but she is really hard to pill and the vet gave her one before we left and it made her vomit. I`m not sure what it was called
I will jot that down though so I can ask them.

Thank you Nat.

Well, I`m a little confused because you know how you try and remember everything they say but there is so much to take in?

They got her bloods back today which shows a problem with her liver. There are 5 things that are raised but she said only 2 were significant and were to do with the liver. This is what it says.

GLOBULIN ----------45.1----------gl----------25.0-45.0 ( Normal range)

ALT ( SGPT ) 37c---637.1---------IU/L--------5.0-60.0

ALK. PHOSPHATASE 37c,
--------------------173.1---------IU/L------------>60.0

CK (CKP )-----------226.6---------IU/L--------20.0-225.0

SODIUM/POTASSIUM RATIO,
--------------------42.35---------------------28.0-40.0

They are using an outside lab because their blood machine is broken so she rang them and asked them to do thyroid test on her blood. They will know that result by tomorrow.

She felt her neck and said she has a very slight goitre but she doesn`t really fit hyperthyroidism
She said they are agressive and have a racing heart where as Maisie plays dead and heart is normal
Her weight is down to 2.8kg

Aargh, the waiting! She did get a good look in her eyes and said she may have to check her blood pressure if it is her thyroid because that can cause eye problems but she could only see cataracts.

What else, what else

Oh, They only had a few packets of wet food there but I picked up some kitten food and she just ate a few teaspoons
I`m going to the petshop tomorrow so I`ll pick up some of everything to try. She`ll eat one thing one day then turns her nose up at everything the next

She just had a cuddle

Do her pupils look normal?
Cocos were large so the vet checked for high bp and she has it.
They also told me thyroid problems can cause high bp.
Cocos came out a little low.
I hope your cat will be ok.
Prayers for her to get better.

Linny i'm just seeing this now

Is there a marks and spencers store near you Linny?. My three have their large cans of luxury mackeral, and the luxery tuna. It stinks because theres proper chunks of fish in a jelly, but they love it.

Lots of mega healthy coming for the poor baby

Maisie's bloodwork looks like my Stomper's when he gets a pancreatitis/IBD attack. I had bloods drawn 12 days apart and he went from perfect center range of normal to LFTS high.

He also starts vomiting and stops eating. Sometimes gets the IBD diarrhea, but not often. For him it seems to attack his small intesting close to his stomach.

The CK is only a little high and that can happen with a difficult blood draw or a stressed kitty, so don't worry about that one.

He also starts vomiting and stops eating. Sometimes gets the IBD diarrhea, but not often. For him it seems to attack his small intesting close to his stomach.

I don't know if this will help Maisie at all but this is Stomper's standard treatment and it helps when he gets in Maisie's condition.

Cyproheptadine (appetite stimulant) twice daily. I put it in a gel cap so it doesn't taste icky and make him drool. Unfortunately it is a pill and not easy for hard to pill cats.

Prednisolone. 5mg 2x daily until symptoms improve then start to taper down. This time he is staying on 5 mg once daily because he crashes when we go lower.

Metronidazole we used to do this one but it tastes really nasty and it makes him even less likely to eat. Plus it doesn't seem to help him so we don't do this anymore.

Cyanocobalamin (SC injection) just started this B12 protocal from TAMU. Stomper really responds well to the B12. So I got a bottle from the vet today and we will start the protocal. Studies show it helps tremendously in cats that have malabsorption and weight loss due to IBD. Protocal can be found here http://www.cvm.tamu.edu/gilab/resear...in.shtml#Intro

Hoping you have found something to get Maisie to eat.

Fingers crossed you can find something, and that the vet can get to the bottom of it. I highly recommend HiLife tuna and salmon (sold in individual pouches, it is one of the few old style ones left, so it is complimentary, but excellent for cats that are being fussy to eat). There are lots of brands of stinky fish foods available these days.

Thanks

Her pupils look like this...

Pretty cloudy but one is worse than the other. She has had those brown marks on the iris since I`ve had her. Vet said it was an age thing.

I got some today and she will have a mouthful or two then not interested. She is very interested in what I eat though. Don`t quite get that unless her old owners fed her scraps

That was very interesting
I`m going to write those meds down and ask the vet. Do they help Stomper gain weight?
When Maisie had the steroid depot she ate really good and maintained her weight but was still very boney? Not sure if that is because of age. She does seem generally weak even when she is 'well'.

She did have terrible runny poo for a long time when I first had her but that seems to be under control.

I got her two packets of Hi Life to try today
She tried it before and didn`t like it but she had a mouthful today.

Well, I`m a bit annoyed because the people doing the blood test said it would take a couple of hours yesterday and the vet said she`d ring. Nothing. So I rang them at lunchtime today and they said it probably wont be ready until tomorrow afternoon

Maisie spent last night under the radiator in the lounge
She was there when I went to work and when I got back she had vomited. Now she is all cuddley again and clingy
She`s had a few mouthfuls of food.

I wish the old vet that knew her better hadn`t left. Looks like we will be going back tomorrow unless they have some answers

Linny, stress with them in a nice way that when they say their going to ring you they do just that, because it's worrying enough as it is, especially when you've just lost Kitty

Thanks guys
She is doing about the same, no vomit today.

I`m really p****d off now

They hadn`t rung me so I just called and they said, 'Oh someone will ring you when they come back.' So I said I was told they would be back monday so she checked and said they weren`t back yet
and that she`d leave a note on the vets peg. Not much good when she told me she is off the rest of the week.

Are those how her pupils look in sunlight or when its darker?
Coco eyes have that look also.
She has Lenticular Sclerosis besides the high bp.
Here is what it is http://www.petplace.com/cats/lenticu...ats/page1.aspx
I hope your vet calls you back soon.
Coco pupils were big in daylight and that why she was checked for high bp.
I hope something helps your cat soon and she feels better.

We are hoping that the B12 is going to help him gain weight. Right now, he eats the same as my other cat that weighs 14 pounds, but Stomper only weights 10.5 lbs. He is very bony too, can even feel the bones in his head

I hope you have heard back from the vet today. I would be fuming mad too. This is so hard to deal with in the first place, to not get result information back is rude and hurtful.

:hugs and still coming your way!

Hmmm, I looked at that and it looks a lot more like Maisies eyes than the pics I`ve seen of cataracts. Her pupils only contract when she is outside in summer in direct sunlight. She always looks cross because her pupils are big

Poor Stomper
I hope he does gain some weight

So, after I got my boss to ring them this afternoon, I finally got a call back. It was the vet who first diagnosed Kitty so I know she is good and a lovely woman.

The test was back and her thyroid levels are ever so slightly up but not so much as to be classed as hyperthyroid and not up enough to cause the levels in her liver that she has.

She said she either has something
liver disease( not fatty ) or a tumour in her liver

So she wants to get her in as an inpatient to get some fluid in her and see if they can get her eating. They could also do an ultrasound to look at the liver but would really need to do a biopsyfor a definate diagnosis.

I asked if it could be down to her IBD. She said it is a slight possibility but that would also lean more towards the likelyhood of her having a tumour.

Anyway, Maisie is going in at 9am tomorrow to see if they can do anything and give her supportive care.

Unfortunatley Maisie unlike Kitty isn`t insured because of all her previous ill health. They don`t pay out on existing conditions. So, yeah, that`s where we`re at.

Please say a little prayer for Maisie
