I did not know (until I read the USA today article) that NB changed the formula...that's why they knew there was a problem with a particular lot.

I looked at the current gp/v page and a google cache of the gp/v page...

let me try and post the links

Old formula

New formula (note the rice protein concentrate...yet the same page says "no rice", huh?)

UGH I wish I hadn't thrown out my bag of the NB venison and green pea. So I don't know whether or not it had the rice protein concentrate in it. I can't even find when we bought it at Petco because my husband has the receipt somewhere.

What is rice protein concentrate?
How do we identify it in a food?

Is it ground rice or rice flour?

Dexter & Sadie are still munching on small amounts of Nutro NC Wt. Mgmt. dry.

Relax?

Basically I am holding my tongue (fingers?) here because I am too angry/frustrated to say anything intelligent, and what I would say now would probably be slanderous, let alone suitable for family viewing. I am taking deep breaths and my mantra is "It will be okay".

It's like the ol saying "Good Night & Good Luck"

I just checked the bag of it i bought at Petco on Thursday (04/12/07) and it did not contain rice protein concentrate, whew. It must only be very new bags. This is the first time buying at a store with low stock turnover worked in my favor, heh.

And now - why in the world would they add rice protein to an allergy formula? Gah!

I noticed on the dvp site, the ingredient is listed in the venison foods, as rice protein concentrate.

Thank you...I'm sure it was before that, so I hope it is only the very new bags! I hope they can get us some more details soon.

OK- deep breath.

The bag of dry NB Venison and Pea I have is the old formula. None of the cats have eaten it for about a month because everyone is on all wet food. For those of you who have been buying this food regularly, was there any indiction that the formula had changed? Like a "New Formula" or "New and Improved" sticker on the bags? I know I haven't noticed anything like that in the NB displays when I've bought the canned food. It would be nice if some warning were given about formula changes especially for a food that presents itself as anti-allergen. It would also be nice if NB updated their web page to delete the mention of "no rice". Not everyone reads the entire ingredients listing.

The canned Venison and Pea I have does not contain rice of any kind. The Turkey and Giblets contains brown rice flour. I'm hoping that brown rice flour is exactly what it says it is whereas rice protein concentrate is further processed in some way. I've been feeding this food for over a month and all the cats are doing well. At this point I'll continue to feed the canned foods.

I am, of course, upset/disturbed/angry that melamine has been found in yet another pet food ingredient. Now I'm anxious to find out where the rice protein concentrate was imported from. Given the fact that both contaminated ingredients are "grain" related I'll be looking for grain free foods.

Here's a description of rice protein concentrate I found through a Google search.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
Rice Protein Concentrate is the concentrated protein fraction of rice grain, resulting from the rice wet milling process. Rice Protein Concentrate is a bland, hypoallergenic pet food ingredient.

I just checked out some of my canned foods:
Evolve Turkey
AvoDerm Tuna & crab cuts
by Nature pouches
Tiki Cat

All do not contain rice protien. At this point, all we can do is read labels carefully!

Can we believe that rice flour is a safe ingredient? That is what is in the NB canned foods?

Thanks for input you have sharkey.

I'm starting to become suspicious of the two questionable bags of California Natural i got that contain "brown rice", both from the same lot number. Grain free may be the best bet for now.

My Solid Gold dry, Felidae canned, and Innova canned all have Brown Rice. I hope that is safe.

Well, i don't want to panic anyone, there is no evidence to suggest it's anything other than rice protein specifically. But i'm thinking it's better to play it as safe as possible until the source of this contamination is identified.
