You may want to see if you can find a cat specific vet.  A lot of vets are very dog-centric and act like cats are small dogs.  A good cat vet is worth their weight in gold.

I totally agree and was going to suggest this.  I can help a lot (with both dogs and cats!) Plus what about some of those toys that you put food in and they have to work to get it out?  Since he's so smart, he may enjoy the 'hunt'.
