snick and jasper had their third room swapping yesterday. i've learned that snick is not tolerating the room swapping, i think simply because she prefers to be downstairs on the first floor with all her favorite comfy spots. because of snick's medical issues, she tends not to tolerate things she doesn't like very well. everything was going very well with yesterdays room swapping for an hour or so, and i set up two baby gates (stacked upwards) in the door to jasper's safe room where snick was at that point. i had a sheet draped over the baby gates so there was only about 1 1/2 inches or so for the cats to be able to see each other along the bottom of the baby gates. jasper joined me up by the baby gates and walked up to them and peered in at snick, who hissed and meowed at him. jasper immediately ran back away from the baby gates. so i put jasper in a cat carrier temporarily and carried snick back downstairs, and left jasper free run of the upstairs and down the stairs to the screen door (looking into the kitchen). snick has never hissed or anything at jasper, and has seemed to be wanting to meet him.

i thought about the whole incident for quite a while, and i really think snick's reaction was to being somewhere she didn't want to be -- upstairs, instead of downstairs where she prefers to be. snick remained grumpy and hissy even towards me until she'd had a nice long nap yesterday. when snick is behaving like this, i can see how poorly she really feels generally.

so what i'm going to do is no more room swapping. instead, i'll set up a baby gate or two (stacked) between the living room (snick's favorite room, where she spends most of her time) and the kitchen. then every few days i'll simply let snick stay in the living room, and jasper can be downstairs in the kitchen/downstairs hall/downstairs bedroom/bathroom area with me. i'll drape a towel or sheet over the baby gate(s), so there's only 1-2 inches for the cats to peer at each other at the gate(s). and we'll see how that goes.

overall, i think jasper is doing very well. and he seems to be moving past his shyness and being scared of snick. my feeling is that jasper feels ready to spend more time downstairs, and maybe even to meet snick face to face soon. i'm going to take it slowly after snick's hissing though, to feel out if she's fine with jasper as long as she's able to be in the areas of the house she prefers.

Aww, sweet Snick, It does sound like she just wants to stay where she is comfy.    She's like, "hey mom, I have seniority as the senior cat here, let me stay where I want."  I think your plan to do that, & let Jasper wonder around is a good idea. They'll feel eachother out & take it at their pase.  Their smart, they must be figuring it all out by now.

it's been a while since i updated snick and jasper's integration here, too long really.

looking back to where we were when i last posted, i can see that we've come a very long way.

we did try putting up a baby gate between the living room area (where snick prefers to be the majority of the time) and the rest of the main floor. jasper is a young (about 2 1/2 years old) and agile boy, so he jumped the baby gate without a thought.  so, we proceeded with short supervised visits. at first, there was some hissing and soft growling from snick as jasper would explore a little around the living room. as the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th supervised visits came and went, snick's hissing and soft growling was significantly lessened. so several days ago i tried simply leaving jasper's safe room door open and he was able to come downstairs with us as he wanted and return upstairs to his safe room whenever he wanted too. that went very well. we're doing the same today, and i've noticed significant forward progress. today jasper settled onto one of the platforms on one of the cat trees in the living room while snick was enjoying her wonderful (and much loved already) new cushiony mat-bed (a christmas gift, but i figured why wait to let her start enjoying it). snick kept an eye on jasper while he relaxed and enjoyed looking out the window. they both relaxed in their spots for about 25-30 minutes. then snick decided she wanted a snack and headed out to the kitchen. so i followed her and gave her some canned food, and gave jasper some canned food about 4-5 feet away from snick. they both ate for a while, keeping an eye on each other. then snick started meowing at jasper, so he decided to go back up to his safe room. i'm leaving the door to jasper's safe room open for the rest of the afternoon at least, should he decide to come downstairs again.

these were very big "firsts" for both cats today. the first time snick was comfortable with not being "up high" when jasper was in the room with her. the first time they've been comfortable enjoying a little quiet time in the same room. and the first time they've been comfortable eating relatively near each other. i'm so very proud of both snick and jasper!

snick and jasper's integration is going well.  we're doing supervised visits pretty much every day. jasper is not a dominant/alpha cat, in fact he backs down anytime snick even meows at him. snick is a very smart girl, and she's figured this out, and so she's been meowing at jasper lately. this meowing at him causes jasper to run back up to his safe room, which i think has become snick's desired result. i think this is simply more getting used to each other, part of the integration process, and both cats working out the "pecking order". i've been thinking to spend more one-on-one time with jasper, to help him feel more loved and accepted and therefore more confident. i do spend several hours with him over the course of almost every day, and sleep upstairs with him for a couple hours of each night. jasper does come downstairs with snick and me, mostly to be near me more and also to explore. he's becoming familiar with what usually goes on in (the rest of, outside his safe room) our home each day, and is just starting to become a part of this. just today, jasper has discovered that he can curl up on my lap while i'm sitting at the computer. he also likes to watch the tv, which snick doesn't do.

snick is 14 years old, so a senior cat. she has IBD, as well as chronic kidney disease stage 2. she's also had pancreatitis and idiopathic hypercalcemia in the past.
she really has been in the wars poor baby.
I had IBD. It's a rotten illness for a human but must be tons worse for an animal.

yes, snick has been through a lot.

it was the initial IBD flare up that was about the worst. after we got the IBD more under control, it's been occasional flare ups. some of those flare ups have been quite severe, but under the supervision of our vet i've been able to get snick through them.

thought i'd post another update.

snick and jasper's integration is continuing to go well. we're doing supervised visits almost every day, where i just open jasper's safe room door and he can come downstairs and go back upstairs as he wants to. i think jasper is gradually spending more and more time on the first floor with snick and me, and he seems to be becoming comfortable around the whole house. i'm able to lay down and take a nap for an hour or so while they're visiting, and not have any negative interactions between snick and jasper.

jasper still prefers to eat upstairs in his safe room, though he'll eat snick's food (in the kitchen, downstairs) if i haven't taken it up. my next thing to try working on may be setting up another food mat across the kitchen from where snick's food mat is, so that jasper and snick can both eat their meals in the kitchen eventually.

i think it'll be a while before i try both cats together through the night. snick loves to snuggle under the covers in bed with me at night, and jasper also loves this. so we'll wait a while before working on this.

i did give snick a "just us two girls" night yesterday evening. she's been so good and tries so hard with the integration that i wanted to give her a break and have us spend a little time together.

Aww, that's great! ...and so sweet you & Snick had a "girls night."  I love it!
)  snick and jasper had a tiny little "to do" today. just snick in the kitchen eating and jasper wanting to pass by about 2-3 feet from her, which snick was not comfortable with. jasper tried to pass by and snick stepped forward a step or two and swatted at him. jasper retreated, then went back up to his safe room for a very short while. then he came back downstairs again. i explained to jasper that snick wasn't comfortable being that close right now, and she was scared. i told him that he didn't do anything wrong, and how he's such a good boy. the supervised visit continued through this evening with no problems.

thank you! we still have our "moments" in the integration, times when snick isn't comfortable (usually with jasper being relatively close to her). so far snick and jasper have done very well, but we have a ways to go yet before they're fully integrated.

You may have a ways to go, but you're still light years ahead of Sinbad and Tempest!  I can only read your progress and be pleased for your success, and sigh with envy.
