I have 3 packets of yeast that expired Sept. 30th. Should I toss em or use them real quickly?
Well, has anyone got on your nerves this year? Hallowe'ens coming up....Originally Posted by MoochNNoodles
It says 'Best if used by.' I had to go check.
I also found in the bottom back side of my refrigerator, 2 jars of yeast-both opened- that expired in Oct of '05 and Oct of '06!!!I think I'll toss those!
Oh that is soooo how my husband is with things!Originally Posted by Yosemite
I'm still trying to convince my daughter that if the label says "best before" a certain date, that doesn't mean at midnight the product expires.
I agree, the date isn't important if you proof it. I proof all the time, that way I know if something went wrong, it wasn't the yeast. Use some of the water in the recipe for proofing, like a quarter cup and a good pinch of sugar, sprinkle the yeast on top and stir it in. Put it in a warm place and wait about 10 minutes, it should be foamy by then.Originally Posted by CarolPetunia
Just to be sure it doesn't ruin your baking, though, you should "proof" it first... put it in a little warm water with a bit of sugar and wait to see if it foams up. If it does, you can use it!
If it doesn't, the little yeasty guys are dead. Go to the sink and give 'em a proper burial at sea.
