I used headpins. Then attached the other beads to the loops. (I figure I can always make an eyepin from a headpin so all I have are headpins.)

Yup, me too! I've never bought an eyepin in my life.

If I ever get rich enough to work in sterling silver, I won't even buy headpins -- I love the look when you hammer the end out wide to create a "head" on a piece of wire. Doesn't work so well with plated wire, though...
