Why does my cat do this?

Morty is a classic lap cat and is ALWAYS on my lap whenever I'm in my recliner. But he has had this habit since the beginning; he grabs a part of my clothes, usually the lower part of my shirt, and bites down on it, and just stays that way for the longest time, accompanied by very loud purring and a bit of paw kneading. Is this a remnant of not being sufficiently weened as a kitten? I have no way of knowing, since I adopted him at the age of about 10 months. He's about 11 now. Very curious as to why he does this. Oh, and if he's somewhere else in the house and I start whistling, he comes running up to me making almost sad-sounding, loud meows, and will start the shirt biting again.

Sounds like it is a remnant of nursing behavior. Some cats will do it their entire lives - it just becomes a comforting habit to them.
