Why Does my Cat Always Growl and Hiss

6 months ago, my cat had 5 kittens. It seems that whenever my eldest cat isnt around her kittens she will behave fine and be a nice cat. When she is around her kittens, or when she is in the same place as her kittens (eg. house) she will growl, hiss and scratch. Please tell me why, i really would like to know
